Cloth Diapering

OS diaper question

Hey ladies! I have another question for you wonderful cd mamas.

My dd was born a few weeks ago at 7 lbs 15 oz, lost a bit of weight and now at 3 weeks is 9 lbs 5 oz. I have been using mostly disposables with some flats and covers thrown in the mix, but have yet to try OS on her.

So, I hear that OS typically fits around 10 lbs. Does that seem to be the case more often than not? I've been having quite a few blowouts in the sposies and would love to switch to cloth full time but don't know if it's more than just their being less than 10 lbs that keeps them from fitting OS.

It is really hard to say. It depends on the type of diaper with the shape of your baby. My DD took a while to fit because she is tiny and has skinny legs, but I had better luck with some brands than others. I would say to just give it a try! Put the diapers on and see how good of a fit you can get. We had our share of blow outs in the beginning, but I learned to snap them up better and she started getting bigger to fill them out better, so it is much better now.

  • The main reason OS diapers end up leaking on newborns is leg chub, or lack thereof. You'll want to make sure the diaper is on the smallest rise setting (so fully snapped) to get the leg holes as small as possible.

Also, which OS brands do you have? Best Bottoms and Grovia tend to be a little smaller than other OS, whereas Blueberry and Alva tend to run bigger. And aplix/velcro will probably give you a better fit than snaps.

  • Just a nice reminder that covers can also be used over disposables to help contain blowouts.  Assuming of course that the covers actually fit ok around your LOs legs and waist.
  • We didn't start using OS until DD was 12lbs or so. I second using covers over sposies, very helpful for newborn poo.

  • I never thought of using covers over disposables! That's genius!
And I have a mostly BG stash, with some Flips, Alvas and Rumparooz thrown in. I guess we will see which ones fit best?

And then I have GMD prefolds with bumkins covers that should fit soon too. I've just never cloth diapered a little babe and it's all new again

  • Our BG 4.0s fit first out of our OS stash. Try them on her and see. If they don't fit, try later. :)

  • BG 4.0 was the first of our OS pockets to fit at about 1month.  (born at 7lb 7oz,  9lb 6oz at 6 weeks)  The BG AIOs might have technically fit at about the same time but we didn't use them until later because they just looked so bulky.  We could pretty much use everything in our OS stash by about 3 months.
