5 days overdue and the doctor wants to induce

Hi!  My doctor would like to induce me tomorrow.  I'll be 5 days overdue but I have also been monitored closely in the 3rd trimester due to Low Papp-A and Single Umbilical Artery.  Everything has been great!  Baby is measuring well, fluids looks good, and as of today I'm 3 cm dilated and about 90% effaced.  I continue to go back and forth if I would like to be induced or see if the baby will come on his own.  It doesn't help I don't make decisions :)  I guess I'm just disappointed that I won't be home when contractions start and that my labor won't be what I was imagining it to be.  But I suppose I should get use to that ;)

Anybody have any experiences with being induced?

  • I don't have any experience, but did they say why they want to induce? If the tests came back fine, then you might be able to hold off for a few days.

  •  I would trust your body and your baby to come when baby is ready. Induction is no picnic - I am a doula and have witnessed multiple inductions. They are not comfortable or fun and increase your risk for forceps/vacuum/c-section delivery. You have to do what is right for you, but personally I would never allow an induction on myself unless I knew for sure that something was wrong - not just as a precaution.

I was induced with my first.  It wasn't an easy delivery, and I ended up with a c-section (but that was mainly due to my baby being sunny side up and not descending, not because of a failed induction).  But it ended with a healthy mom and baby and in the end, that's what matters the most.

It sounds like your doctor has a couple legit medical reasons not to want you to stay pregnant much longer.  I'm sure s/he would rather get your baby out now while things are still healthy, than possibly wait too long until things don't look healthy, and have a potentially sick baby.  It sounds like your cervix is favorable too, so that is good.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • Another single umbilical artery here, along with cystic hygroma. I was induced 1 day shy of my due date and don't regret it a bit. There actually ended up being a very big defect with the placenta too, so it was definitely the right decision. I was 1-2 cm dilated, pitocin started at 8 am, doctor broke water at 9 am, and our little guy was born at 12:58 pm. It was a very good experience.

Not all inductions are bad. I was induced with my daughter at 41w with absolutely no dilation, effacement it anything. Cervadil in at 6pm and she was born at 10:02 am the next morning, no pitocin needed.

    Whatever your decision, good luck!

  • i was induced with my ds at 40w3d due to dropping fluid levels. not effaced or dilated AT ALL. given cervadil at 230pm on st patrick's day, it fell out around midnight, contractions steady but piggy-backed, so given pitocin around 5am to split them up and make them good for pushing. got epi just prior to pitocin drip around 6-7cm dilated. they let me try to sleep for a couple hours and by 7am, i was 10cm and ready. too much epi made pushing hard for me, so i ended up pushing for two hours to get him out (ugh). born at 911am on the 18th. all in all, i think it went very well and wouldn't be hesitant to with your stats. lol. you seem very ready so the slightest assist might get your party started.

but if you want to wait, i would ask the dr if you can just increase the frequency of your monitoring to keep baby safe and you sane. :) good luck!!
