Breastfeeding

Another post for help

Hi ladies, baby boy is 2.5 weeks old now, and we are still trying to establish breastfeeding. I am pretty much EP'ing now and feeding baby with bottle. I am trying to put him to breast at least 3-4 times a day, but without success. We went to a LC last week who suggested a nipple shield, that is not working either. She also suggested slight tongue tie, but pediatrician did not agree. In short, he only wants to barely open his mouth, and latches really shallow, so it's painful and doesn't draw milk. I can't seem to get him to relax his mouth, open up, and do the work to nurse. I know the bottle is just spoiling him further, but not sure what else to do. Everyone says keep working on it, which I will, but curious if any of you have experience that might help. I really would love to get us breastfeeding, for a variety of reasons. I have plenty of milk so not sure why he won't engage while on the breast. If I feed him a little with the bottle, get him relaxed, and them put him on we do okay, but he will draw a little milk and then fall asleep. He is back above birthweight now, so don't know how far I can push him to just try and eat from the boob? Thanks for any help.

  • I agree on getting a second opinion on the tongue tie.   I have 2 kiddos who had them and my first was clipped at 3 days by his pediatrician and at 3 years old we discovered the pediatrician didn't do a complete job - he still has an anterior tie.  Another pediatrician also dismissed my daughter's tie but we had it lasered anyways and it turns out it was significantly restrictive.  There is a great Tongue Tie support group on facebook that might be worth looking into to see pictures and there is a list of preferred providers by state just in case you do need to have that looked at more closely.

For my DD (4 weeks) the FLIPPLE technique has been really helpful in getting a deeper latch.  You can google videos and info about it.  Good Luck!

  • Agree with PPs. Also, when you do see another LC, ask for help doing exercises to loosen up and strengthen baby's TMJ muscles. We would have to massage DD's neck and jaw before nursing, and use a nipple to open up her mouth to teach her how to latch. I can't quite describe it here, but definitely see another LC, and ask about that in addition to the tongue tie.
