Twin pregnancies

Give me the low down on your twin pregnancies would ya? There is a possibility there may be two instead of one! ;D how did you feel during your twin pregnancy? How did you measure during your twin pregnancy? Was it similar or completely different to other pregnancies you've had? And anything else that told you that you were having twins before a confirmation was made?

I would say that weight gain might be an indicator. I don't know if I could wait the entire time not to see the baby. I understand you aren't doing any scans, but are you doing a doppler? I think 3 sets of heartbeats would be an indicator of two also.

Really no way to be certain unless you have a divine intervention or an ultrasound. Could be twin kangers.

I suppose there is always a possibility it could be two and not one...I'm so confused by this. Did you have a dream or speak to your pastor? Those are apparently really good indicators of twins.

What indicators do YOU have that you might be carrying twins, @Maybeitsso? If you list the odd symptoms, etc., the singleton moms can weigh in on whether we have them or not.

I'm a steady 3-4 weeks ahead (25ish now) midwife says I "feel full" and it seriously feels like a wrestling match going on In there. My weight gain has been different than my last and I've gained about a pound a week so far (started off at 140) but it's all in my belly I swear! My baby/babies always push away from the doplar so we don't use that at every appointment. I've had major hiccups way down low on my bladder yet kicks way up in my ribs almost simultaneously. The other thing that tips me off is the complete 180
This has been from my first pregnancy and how easily it was to agree on two girl and boy names... We were going to hold off on ultrasounds unless something arose to where baby wasn't moving as much or there was bleeding etc. So no, no scans or ultrasounds. My midwife is insanely supportive which is awesome! She naturally home birthed her twins so she knows what's going on ;D. So we are feeling it out and if the need arises or I just can't stand not knowin then yeah we will end up going to get and ultrasound lol!

Does your MW think there could be twins in there? I think that's the opinion that you want to listen to. Oh, and I wouldn't go by your ability to choose two names as a sign/symptom.

She has said it was a possibility. But being able to agree on names between us hasn't been easy before hand...it just gives me that "feeling". My gut my just play tricks on me and such.

I get the impression you WANT twins and that plays no role in what's actually growing inside of you.

I thought I could possibly be having twins very early on. I thought this for a few reasons. I had a m/c and my cycles were a mess afterward so I went on b/c for a month to try to force my body back to normal. After you stop b/c you have a higher chance of getting pregnant. I also started clomid right after stopping b/c and I had ovulation pain on both sides. My dr did caution me that I had a high chance of multiples because of the treatment we were doing. Then when I got my first quant it was pretty high which is SOMETIMES a sign of multiples. I had that gut feeling that you are talking about and thought for sure I was having twins. I've had several u/s and there is only one very healthy baby in there.

Every pregnancy is different and you may gain at a different rate. My best guess is you are having one. If you want to know for sure, have an u/s or wait until delivery.

I think you need an u/s to be 100% positive it's twins. Otherwise, there could be a lot of reasons for the symptoms.

I am trying not to be judgy. So I apologize if this comes across that way. But I think that suspecting there might be twins is a very good reason to get an ultrasound done.  It can change a lot of things and you could be more at risk for some issues with twins over a singleton.  I think it would be worth knowing for sure if you need to keep in mind those extra risk factors or not.

I am pregnant with twins. I have had no weird or unusual symptoms outside of the normal pregnancy symptoms. I have also not gained a lot of extra weight.  Unless you were tracking your cycle and know the exact date you ovulated you could be further along (which would have been determined by a dating ultrasound).

I don't even know where to go with all of the gut feeling stuff or a midwife birthing her own twins.

I didn't think you could opt out of ultrasounds. Not that I'd want to. But what do I know, I'm a FTM. Though I do agree with PP if you highly suspect its twins you may want to get a scan to check. Even if you personally don't look at it. I know they used to do this stuff without technology back in the day but some technology is good. It saves baby and mother's lives

If your midwife suspects twins, I think she's out of line for not encouraging you to get an ultrasound.  Can she not hear 2 heart beats with the fetascope?

I agree with PP that if my midwife suspected twins, I would request an ultrasound (at least a brief enough one to rule out multiples). From there, should you be having twins, you could choose how to proceed for your prenatal care and birth plans.

Also, maybe your midwife said that "it is a possibility" because at this point it's tough to rule out the possibility without an ultrasound, especially since you've had little success with the doppler...

She might be supporting your right to make your own decisions for your pregnancy, but whether she thinks no ultrasounds is wise is another question altogether.

Get an ultrasound.  Find out.  Sometimes science is good (a lot of times science is good).

What is up with the everyone wanting twins thing?  I had twin sisters and there are a lot of risks/stresses with two.  I mean, double the cute and blessings, yea, but having seen my sisters grow up there can be lot of identity struggle, etc.  It's not all adorable doubles of things!  I'm sure those of you who are expecting twins/have had them can say the same.

I'm going to argue that all of the time, science is good.

OP, I'm trying to not be too snarky here, but why are you choosing to have zero scans done? Even the crunchiest homebirthers I know have the anatomy scan.

If the need arises or if you just can't stand not knowing, then you'll succumb to this apparent "evil" that is ultrasound? Forgive me, but as @theresat858 said, anatomy scans aren't just for fun. And the fact that your midwife is alright with zero scans for any potential issues and will birth your children seems a bit far fetched to me. There are so many reasons why you need an ultrasound. I can't believe the amount of ignorance, OP. I just can't.

I try to always respect  other people's choices when it comes to healthcare and how they monitor their pregnancy but I find it hard to believe that instead of actually going to people that can definitively tell you if you are pregnant with twins you choose to come to an internet forum to tell us that you feel like you are pregnant with twins.

Each pregnancy is different regardless of the sex of the baby or the amount of babies you are carrying and getting antidotal stories from other women will not prove or disprove your theory that "OMG, I'm totes preggers with twins because we can agree on names"  

Please for the love of everyone's sanity AND the health of you and any babies you may be carrying, go get a quick scan to find out what is actually happing inside of your uterus.

I am going to suspend disbelief for a moment to tell you that if you are carrying twins you are risking your life and theirs by not seeing a specialist and having ultrasounds. Having twins makes you automatically high risk. My twin pregnancy ended it their death at 20 weeks and a D&E. They had SIUGR which is pretty common in twin pregnancies as are many other complications that can be managed with proper care including TTTS, growth issues, placenta sharing problems, cervix problems, bed rest, much higher chance of c-sections and they require an early delivery and the list goes on and on. Most midwifes won't continue seeing you after they learn you are carrying twins.

So if you are planning to rely on the power of prayer and word of your pastor I truly hope you aren't carrying twins because your refusal of proper care is putting you and your babies at major risk.

OMG go get an ultrasound! I had to have like 10 with each kid.. I mean my daughter runs into walls here and there, but for the most part she turned out okay

I can't say for sure, but I do remember that in her intro, OP said that she valued a simple, natural life...said stuff about growing her own food, living off the land, etc. I'd expect she wants a low-tech birth that fits in with her low-tech, natural lifestyle.

Yep the pastor was originally from another poster thinking she was pregnant with twins but now it is just a running joke for all posters who think they're KU with multiples for no particular reason.

I seriously don't understand why people want to be pregnant with twins so badly.  I am a freaking wreck this pregnancy. More so than my last.

Nicb13 EXAAACTLY!!! I even tagged her... even though she was the OP... sometimes I don't see people's responses to me because I don't get notifications when I'm quoted... but you would think she would read and respond back to her own thread?? Maybe tonight?

And yes, I remember reading the other poster that talked about twins and a Pastor etc...sounds very similar to Maybeitsso...

I'm team green but if I were having twins I would definitely find out the sex!! And if I thought I had a gut feeling I were having twins I would definitely make sure to have a scan and ask if there are 2 in there!!!

Yeah, you can have a natural, low-tech life/birth and still get proper prenatal care.

Seriously. I had a vanishing twin but at the time didn't know that baby had passed already. When they did TV ultrasound and the doc said she saw 2, I turned white and felt like I was going to pass out. The nurse had to fan me and they wouldn't let me off the table for a little while. There seems to be some sort of weird obsession with having twins.

I also do not understand the twin obsession. After being part of the twin mama community for 20 weeks and seeing all the additional complications I would never wish that for anyone.

Come on ladies-- @Maybeitsso‌ and the crazy pastor lady are very different. OP is not crazy and she has been on our BMB since the beginning. I actually was interested to see if anyone could answer her question but it sounds like there's not a good way to know you're having multiples w/o an ultrasound.

Please don't ride in and be a white knight. Clearly there's no solid way to confirm multiples other than scientific/medical interference. I don't care if she was here before all of us. It doesnt change the fact that this post is dripping with ignorance.
