3rd Trimester

Scheduled induction for Monday - will be 39 weeks 2 days - anyone have a positive experience?

I should start by saying I have gestational diabetes. This is my first pregnancy, and the diabetes has been controlled thru diet. My numbers are good, baby is measuring good, my weight gain has been appropriate and my blood pressure and non stress tests have all be good! But my doctor wants to induce on Monday to avoid any complications. I'm pretty nervous. On my internal exam yesterday she said I was 1cm dialated, 40% effeaced and my cervix was very very soft. I have been having contractions on and off and menstrual like cramping for about a week now. I am hoping this means I will take well to induction. The plan is for me to come in Monday night and do cervadil to finish thinning and possibly start labor if I haven't already. Then Tuesday morning, depending on how well the Cervadil did, they my try Cytotec, or break my water, and then Pitocin as a last option if nothing is working. I've been reading a LOT of conflicting information of induction, the medications and the method that my doctor has chosen. I would love to hear some POSITIVE induction stories!!!

  • I was induced with DS at 41 weeks and was 0%, 0 cm when I went in the night before. The attempt at cervical rioening did nothing for me, but the pitocin definitely worked especially when they broke my water. It took me the whole morning and part of the afternoon to progress, but I had a sucessful vaginal birth at 3:19om that afternoon after about 45 minutes of pushing. While I would haveloced to go into labor on my own, it didn't happen that way and I have no regrets, very happy with how my inudvtion went. Good luck! Eat a good meal before you check in as you might not get the chance again and get a good night's sleep, possibly a nap too. I slept horribly that night of my induction.

She said I could only have a light dinner. But with the diabetes, eating light is really all I can do anyways!
  • I was induced at 39w5d but I was already 3cm going in. They broke my water, started pitocin 30mins later and DS came 6hrs later. I was told to have a light breakfast that day- I had a small bowl of fruit. I pushed for an hour or two before he was born but it was only because he was a little stuck.
  • I'm exactly the same! Diet controlled gestational diabetic, baby is measuring an estimated 8lbs 13oz, and I've actually been losing weight because of the restricted diet! They are inducing me tomorrow which is my due date. I'm 1-2 cms dialted and they said I don't need cervadil, they'll just pop the water bag and start the pitocin. I'm excited and nervous, what should I expect?!
  • I was induced at 39 weeks 1 day with my first pregnancy. I was 99% effaced and 1 cm. I arrived at 7AM and the baby arrived at about 7PM with 2 hours of pushing. My LO was a little stuck, like a previous poster stated.

I was induced at 39 w 5 days via cytotec and AROM.  Took two 25 ug doses of cytotec and I had dilated to a 3 and was 80% (started the day at almost 2 cm and 60%.)  Then my midwife broke my water and that sent me into active labor within 2 hours.  Unfortunately I stalled at 5 cm for something like 7 hours so she started pitocin at 9:00 pm, I had A at 2:50 am after only 40 minutes of pushing.

Good luck with your induction!  My only advice really is try to get as much sleep as you can the night before.  I was too anxious about my induction that I only slept 2 hours beforehand... I feel like I would have handled labor a lot better than I did with more sleep under my belt.  (I was exhausted after the first 12 hours and ended up with an epidural after 16 when I really wanted to go med-free.)

  • You don't sound totally on board with this induction.  Do you feel it's the right thing to do?

  • I was induced at 39w 5d (also due to GD) and I had a good experience. I needed 2 doses of misoprostol and then my body took over with no further interventions needed. My water broke on its own about 5 hours after the last does of miso and I delivered 4 hours later with no painkillers. I had been at 0 cm when I came in.

I did not have a positive induction unfortunately but my friend did. She went in at 8:00AM and started with Pitocen, had an epidural at around 11:00AM for seemingly mild contractions and delivered after about 10 minutes of pushing at 2:00PM the same day. Everything went really smoothly and happened so quickly. She delivered vaginally with no issues. It can really go either way so just keep an open mind. Good luck!
  • Sort of similar situation...in that I was brought in on a Mon night to further dilate/thin the cervix with cytotec/cervadil. (I could dilate pass 2cm and I was a few days over 41 wks). By Tuesday morning, not real early, they broke my water and soon after my body took over from there with a little help from pitocin. My daughter was born via smooth delivery just before 1pm. Like you, I was afraid to be induced which is why I was at 41 wks. Thankfully I was content being pregnant at that point and was just wanting my body to do things on it's own! Good luck to you!
  • I was induced at 39w3d due to chronic hypertension.

Went in the night before to start the Cytotec [And I will save my rant on the anti-Cytotec crap for another time. It is a widely used medication and plenty of excellent doctors use it responsibly.] I was about 1-2cm dilated and 75% effaced before going in. The following morning I was about 2cm dilated and a touch more effaced. OB started pitocin around 7 in the morning. I got the epidural at 4cm, closer to noon, when my OB broke my water. I got to 8cm by 2:45PM, started pushing at 4:30, and gave birth at 5:21PM. If I had it to do over again, I'd get the epidural immediately.
  • Here's my report on the other side! I went in to be induced and was already 2 cms dilated. They broke my water at 9:30am Thursday morning - shortly after the contractions started and weren't bad at first every 10 mins apart, over the course of 2 hours they went to every 2-3 minutes and beyond horrible. I had really wanted to wait with the epidural and hold off as long as I could, but after another 3 hours in that kind of pain with no time inbetween to recoup I got the epiduaral - all was great after that, except that I didn't keep dilating I maxed out at 5cms and then the baby's heart rate started to dip so they did a c-section. My gorgeous boy was finally out at 1am Friday.
