High-Risk Pregnancy

GD pregnancies

Hi there! One thing that really had me worried my first pregnancy was having GD. I had it under control with diet but it really has me second guessing another pregnancy. Is there any way to try to prevent having GD for future pregnancies? Anyone have any experience with having GD for one pregnancy and not for another? Thanks for your time!!

i'll keep you posted ;)  I'm only 7 weeks but am eating a lower carb lower sugar diet from the start this time, wondering if that will make a difference.  My GD was diet controlled when I was pregnant with GD, but i'm actually a bit overweight to start so i'm worried i'll have it again.

Small price to pay though, there are many worse pregnancy issues :)

I don't want to bring you down at all but this is my 3rd pregnancy & my 3rd round with GD.  First pg I was diet & exercise controlled, 2nd was insulin controlled by about 24-26 weeks, this one I was put on insulin at 12 weeks.  Each pregnancy the GD has been more severe but once you get over the intital reaction of "shit... I have to be on insulin." it's really not that bad.  The insulin shots don't hurt at all & they really don't interfere with my life.  Just another thing to remember to do!  I'm also overweight so that didn't help my situation but I was fairly active between pregnancies.  From what I understand, there's only so much you can do to limit your chances.  Have a healthy BMI, eat a balanced diet & get regular exercise before & during your next pregnancy.  But even all of those things won't guarantee that you won't have GD.  Unfortunately, some things are just out of our control.

  • Thanks for responding!!! I'm going to try to live a healthier lifestyle just because of having GD so maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

  • It's not a guarantee but if you're overweight, losing just 10% if your body weight could help. If nothing else wieghtloss and eating healthier is good in and of itself. Good.luck!

  • Unfortunately GD is not preventable. BUT having it in your first pregnancy does not automatically mean that you will have it in subsequent pregnancies. Just eat healthy and take care of yourself...if GD happens it isn't because you didn't do everything right, it's because that's just how the placenta interferes with your insulin.

  • It doesn't really matter. I'm on my 3rd, not overweight and I am very healthy. I didn't have GD with my first two and have it with this one.
  • I suggest you relax, however there is a greater chance of subsequently having gd in future pregnancies.I'm on baby three and God came with each and this last time I've been on insulin.
