Baby Names

Peter

So I'm digging Peter right now... my husband has a great uncle Peter who he loves dearly. And I really like the name. But two concerns...

1. Is Peter a common euphemism for a penis? Or am I making that up. With our last name I worry about butt jokes, so I don't want to add any extra ammunition.

2. I'm also digging the name Edward, which is my grandpa's middle name. I like Peter Edward, but with our last name his initials would be PEE. I know a lot of people say "as long as it doesn't spell FUK or ASS it's fine." This seems borderline for me... Thoughts?

Re: Peter

  • 1. Yes, Peter can be user as a slang term for penis. Normally, I wouldn't think it would be an issue, but depending on your last name, you may want to steer clear.

    2. I would stay away from PEE initials.

  • 1. DH is Peter. I asked him about the jokes and he says it's a non-issue. It's such a quaint euphemism . . .

    2. . . . unless your initials are PEE. Then it might be more of an issue.

But I love Peter! It would have been on our list if it weren't DH's name (Petra, too).

  • I had never heard it as a euphemism for penis but I had a CW named Michael and after working with him for two years, I found out his FN was actually Peter but he got teased so much about the penis thing when he was growing up that he started going by his MN instead. If your LN is already tease-worthy, I'd probably avoid Peter.

I would 100% avoid the initials PEE. Especially with Peter being a euphemism for penis ...

I love Peter and wouldn't worry too much about the penis thing

    Don't use the initials PEE.

ETA: What on earth is a LN name that starts with E that will make butt jokes possible? Haha.

Enders. I guess I could have included that since I've posted it before. :)

  •  Quaint euphemism seems a good way to put it.  And don't use initials PEE.

  • I think, with the last name and the initials, that I would keep looking. Sorry.

Do not worry about it! Peter is a great name and your LN is nothing to worry about.

  • I love Peter.  And the NN Pete is the cutest to me.  I wouldn't worry about the penis thing.  And I don't think it's a problem with your last name.

PEE initials would be bad though.
  • PEE initials would be rough. Why not Edward Peter?
  • I do like Edward Peter a lot. But I'm not sold on Edward...I'm not sure why. I love the name. And I did think PEE would be awful initials...so if we do Peter as a first name Edward is out. I have a few other middle name ideas with meaning that don't spell anything weird. We're just having such a hard time deciding names! The few I LOVE my husband HATES. And nothing else is jumping out...Peter at least is on our list and has a family connection, which is important to me.

Anyway. Thanks for the input everyone!

  • I mentioned the name to my partner and he burst out laughing, therefore I would not recommend fn Peter with that ln.

  • I'm not much of a fan of Peter. And, right now, it just reminds me of the super creepy character from Game of Thrones.

The bolded confuses me.  If you love the name, why aren't you sold on it?  And it's a family connection as well so it fulfills the same requirement as Peter without giving you an unfortunate acronym.  I'm probably biased, though, as we're using Edward if this LO is a boy, just haven't decided if it will be FN or MN spot either (using both of our father's names and don't have the initials challenges you do, so we just have to decide which we like better for the FN).
  • @jnnfrrose6‌ it confuses me too!!! It just doesn't feel like "the one." I've posted a bazillion times with my name lists, doing keep/toss/add, asking about how certain names sound with our last name/as a sibset. Nothing that we both agree on feels right...but for some reason I'm liking Peter more than Edward...I'm sure that will change in the next 8 or 9 weeks.
