Re: GTKY: Quirky Edition

  • Here's mine:

    1) I stabbed my own foot with a pitchfork when I was in 2nd grade

    2) I have never owned a vehicle with a trunk

    3) I got married by a witch in and Indian restaurant

    Ok I'll play!.....

    1. I can say the Greek Alphabet in under 4 seconds.

    2. I have a strange fear of basements, the ones with the dirt floor and rock walls. I don't have any reason whatsoever for this, but I would have a panic attack if I had to go down in one. If past lives could be true, I would say something really bad must've happened and I was killed or something in one. Morbid thought I know!
    3. I've been doing my own laundry since I was 10. One time I got behind and ran out underwear, so I cut my bathing suit in half (because somehow that made sense). Well it was gym day, so it wasn't a secret for long! I have long time friends that still bring it up.
  • @hooligans4 First off, you're not crazy at all. And second: grilled corn is one of the most amazing foods on this planet! Grilled with butter and cajun spice is amazing! Tried it once at a farm stand and have been hooked ever since.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @hooligans4: the pillow thing is amazing to me-- I can't sleep with ANYTHING over my head. Not even a sheet that creeps up over my cheek. I can't even stand anything near my face. It's a wonder I let anyone kiss me, quite frankly. And I had a friend in high school who refused to pump her own gas but she was just a diva (still is). Your reason makes totally more sense.

    1) I have strange teeth-- 4 molars never had an adult set behind them so the baby versions had to be pulled when I was 12 and the gap closed with braces. BUT I had two sets of adult teeth behind some of my other teeth. And my wisdom teeth were coming in at 90 degree angles (all 4) when I was in college but I didn't have time to get them taken care of so I just chewed a lot of gum and they ended up coming in straight as a result. So I still have my wisdom teeth.

    2) Some of the women in my family (my mom to a lesser degree, my grandmother, me) have a weird connection. My grandmother once just stopped a conversation at her kitchen table and said "My sister just died" and the phone immediately rang-- it was her other sister calling to say that their sister had just had a massive stroke and passed away. My parents went on a trip one summer and I stayed behind because I had a feeling I should. Well my friend (20 years old) died of cancer that week. I told my aunt not to tell my mom I was at the funeral in the event that she called to check in on me. At the funeral, I started crying halfway through the 3rd speaker and for some reason, I looked at my watch. It was 10:21. When I stopped by my aunt's house, she said immediately, "Your mom knows." When I asked her, all mad, "Why did you tell her?" my aunt replied, "She just knew. She called me and said, 'I just had a feeling that Adam just died. Is Daniele okay?'" So I asked my aunt when my mom called and she said "A little before 10:30. Why?"

    3) I have a thing about stuff being equal. So if I spin my wedding ring 3 times clockwise, I then have to spin it 3 times counterclockwise so it's equal. If I tap my right hand's fingers 4 times on the table, I have to then tap my left hand's fingers 4 times on the table. I think it comes from being a middle child. Or I'm just a little bit OCD.

  • @hooligans4 - LOL on the pillow thing :)
@CML11 - My house is from early 1900 - my basement has the stone walls and used to be dirt floor but now it has concrete over it.  I like it...it's quirky :)

    1) - OCD - I have to feel electrical sockets and press down on light switches to make sure they are all OK before I leave the house (I need to allow 10 minutes for this process).

    2) - I like to smell my dog's feet (they're clean and I just like the smell)

    3) - Everything needs to be straight on my desk at work - I don't like it when someone lays something on my desk crooked.

Now, who's the crazy one??  ME!!

  • @hooligans4 my husband sleeps like that (sandwiched between two pillows) - some times I am afraid he will suffocate!

    1) I can't stand having anything on my hands (flour, egg, raw chicken, etc.) so I wash them several times during any cooking process (I am a professional chef, so it is good for whoever I am cooking for).  I go through paper towels (because don't get me started on dish towels and bacteria) like they are going out of style.

    2) I am a total neat freak.  I can tell if something is not level to about a millimeter, I will know if you move something on my shelf.  My closet is organized by color and length of sleeve.  Yet, I hate cleaning.

    3) I cannot sit still and talk on the phone.  I pace all over the house.

  • @meredithcarole‌ I'm so glad I'm not the only one about the clean hands. I'd actually prefer gloves when touching meat. I use way to many paper towels washing my hands and countertops. I'm so freaked out about germs and would never use a dish towel.

    1. I sleep with a certain pillow every night and have for 22 years now. I started sleeping with a stuffed animal when I was 5 and my mom wouldn't let me crawl in her bed anymore when I was scared and when I got married at 18 I figured I had to give up William P Bear so I got a pillow to hold onto instead. I also have a specific pillow case on it and one night my husband made up the bed and accidentally put a different one on it and I turned all the lights on that night woke him up looking all over for my pillow case because I can't sleep without it.

    2. I love to swim but I have a hard time just swimming. I have this crazy need to dive, do flips front and back anytime I'm in water. If I'm on a boat and jumping in the water I don't just jump in, I do a flip into the water. I make my friends nervous and they say I'm a bad influence on young kids that are swimming with me because I use my waterfall as a diving board and the kids follow me. That's right I'm turning 40 in a couple if weeks and I can still do a back flip into the pool. :-)

    3. I'm terrified to drive over bridges, overpasses are the worst. When I'm driving over any type of bridge I get in the center lane and hold onto the wheel really tight and I start sweating bullets.

    Fucking bump!!!!
  • @Pintobean39‌ haha you reminded me of my stuffed animal that I slept with way past 18...like until the 30's? Lol Finally had to throw him away. His name was Rex :(

  • 1) I can deadlift more than most men.
    2) I can't eat after anyone. Even my own fiance.
    3) I sleep with a favorite blanket and carry it around with me (at night) like I'm Linus from The Peanuts.
  • 1. Like @JimBobCooter, I hate going to sleep in socks. I really hated when my mom put me in one-piece pajamas with plastic footies when I was a young girl. I remember my feet getting sweaty in the night. It was awful.

    2. I don't like going to sleep without my dog by my side and the room completely dark. DH and I used to have arguments about him leaving the light on. He likes to sleep with the light on, of course.

    3. I seem quiet and shy, but I have a secret entertainer in me. I was my school mascot (a panther) and I love to do karaoke or break it down on the dance floor.

  • hooligans4 I do the same thing with pillows!  My dh is afraid I'm going to suffocate..my brother does it too!

    1. My father died when he was 43, his father died when he was 43...I've always been paranoid about being 43 until I realized they were male and I'm female.  My brother has the same paranoid feeling (he's just 38 right now)

    2. I can pick up very small things with my toes, yes monkey feet

    3. I love sugar and chew entire packs of bubblegum, one after the other, until my tongue is raw and my jaw hurts

  • I have a stuffed dog that I keep in bed, because it has lavender in it which helps me sleep and relieves my headaches.

    1. I've lived on four continents. Australia, North America, South America, and Europe.

    2. My name is Shannon, so people always think I'm Irish. I'm not,at all, the name comes from shenan, which is the Cherokee word for "star" (my dad was Eastern Cherokee). I got so sick of people making Irish jokes about me on St. Patrick's Day that I invented a holiday for my friends called Cinco de Patrick. On St Patrick's Day, we go out for tacos and margaritas, and on Cinco de Mayo we go to an Irish bar.

    3. My go-to karaoke song is "Just a Friend" by Biz Markie.
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....
  • lol @hooligans4, you would never survive in Florida there are NO STATIONS that will pump your gas for you. @danieleandwayne, you just creeped me out a bit about the whole "connection" thing. Not in a you're weird way but in a "whoa, that sh!t is real" sort of way. @kelley72 I am the exact same with gum. But on top of eating the whole pack, I chew a single piece of gum for like 3-5 minutes max until it's "spoiled" and move on to the next.

    1. I sucked my thumb until the day I got married (the first time). I was 17. (funny, I don't even think I've ever told my (current) husband that)

    2. I'm a little OCD about vacuuming. It has to be done from the far end of the room out to the front and there can't be a single footprint anywhere or else I have to start all over again. Needless to say, I'm the only one who does the vacuuming in my house because my husband and my son have not "learned" how to properly vacuum yet. lol

    3. I have an irrational fear of glass elevators. I once had a dream that I was in one with my son and it detached from the building and I told my son to jump, that it would be ok, and he didn't make it. I WILL NOT step in a glass elevator under ANY circumstance.

  • These are so great! I was trying hard to think of good ones and I'm sure I'll think of something more interesting  after I post this:

    1. If you connect the freckles on my right arm you get the Big Dipper

    2. When my mom was pregnant with me, she was so sure I was going to be a boy (my older sibling is a boy, her older sibling is a boy, my dad had all brothers, as did his dad) that she didn't even have a girl's name picked out, only the name David. I was "baby (last name)" for like three days until they came up with a girl's name.

    3. I'm a pretty modest/prudish person, but during my sophomore year of college I participated in a co-ed naked quad run. Most people who know me find it really hard to believe, but I love that I did it b/c it's the one crazy thing in my otherwise boring, controlled world I will always have. And I was sober!

  • You guys are all so interesting!

@thirtyninetoforty, I don't have a dog now, but I used to smell the family dog's paws when I was a kid.  It is kind of a nice smell. :)

@hooligans4 and @kelley72, just reading about that pillow thing makes me gasp for air.  That hits a lot of my phobias at once.

@JimBobCooter and @URMySunshine77, I can't stand to sleep in socks either.  Ugh!

    Hmmmm...

    1. I greatly prefer baths to showers and will choose them whenever possible, even to wash my hair.

    2. I eat my food in the same order (from vegetables to protein) every time.   I think I got it from working at a nursing home in college (I was a nurse's aide, and sometimes my job included feeding people who weren't able to feed themselves).

    3. I am absolutely petrified of dead things.  Live animals that gross a lot of people out (snakes, rats, spiders) don't bother me at all, but dead ones quite literally make me scream.

  • Thanks for the heads up on the gas stations in florida @MamaBear904, I will NEVER live in Florida now.

@gabbagal I laughed out loud when I read your connect the freckles fact. I don't know why I find that funny, but I do, I'm even smiling now as I type this.

And just to clarify that my nose and mouth are not covered in my pillow sandwich. Eyes, ears and head have to be covered. I even tuck the tail if the pillowcase under my head so it stays put. But it's still weird.

@hooligans4‌ you don't have to pump gas in Jersey, I think that was one of my favorite things when I lived there! I would forget when I went to other states and sit in my car for a moment before realizing I had to do it myself!

  • BeckyPOO5 - Where is your mom from in Bosnia? I lived in Sarajevo for a year.

  • I love this thread!

    1) I am really OCD about loading the dishwasher, to the point that when DH loads it (inevitably the "wrong" way) I will go back and rearrange all the dishes. But I would never tell him this, because I don't want him to stop helping out.

    2) I do not handle needles well (understatement of the year.) When I went to have my wisdom teeth out last year, I literally ran from the room crying when they got ready to give me an IV to put me under. I had to find a dentist who would yank them without anasthesia. I have also cried every time they've drawn blood at my RE office so far. I feel bad for the girls there, who always think they're hurting me

    3) Twins run in my family. In every generation there is at least one set, usually a boy and a girl, but always fraternal. In spite of the risks with multiples, I am secretly hoping I will eventually have twins to keep the "tradition" going.

  • 1. I love animals FAR MORE than I love people. and I l really like most people…..so yeah I'm the crazy lady. I have 5 cats, 2 dogs and feed all the neighborhood hummingbirds. If I could have more creatures to take care of I would. But we don't have anymore space without it being a hoarders situation lol!

    2. Because I have so many animals AND I am a clean person….I vacuum and dust everyday. I pend more time cleaning than most people.

    3. I used to be a stripper! lol. I still have a pole. I wish i was as skinny now as I was back then………it was my favorite job EVER! Not that it wasn't hard to be around girls who were alcoholics or drug addicts (you know the stereotypical stripper) but it was fun. There were quite a few "normal" girls who did that job too…….just fewer of us.

@Hooligans4 I sleep like that too!!! Its not so weird! I especially need to do that when i get my migraines.

Fantastic stuff here, ladies. I'm totally onboard with @ thirtyninetoforty. The paws smell like Fritos after they've been sleeping. Love it! 1) I can't stand the sound of scraping clay / terracotta pots. Really anything that is gritty. Makes my skin crawl. 2) I count syllables in my head to five. I like sentences and thoughts to end at five. Example: I want to go home. 3) I have a pet voice. I think I could easily be a cartoon voice over. My brother and I started it when we were little and called it "weenie talk". Our family dog's name was Lucy but we called her "Weenie". To add to that, I always have crazy nicknames for my dogs.
