For those who have been induced

What are some of the reasons yall have had to be induced? More specifically those who were induced before their due date?

I had my 38 week regular appt yesterday and after getting an internal and all that (said I was 100% effaced and 2 cm dilated. I know that doesn't really mean anything), my doctor mentioned wanting to induce me? I was caught off guard so I didn't think to ask any questions, but now I'm wishing I did. I've had a pretty healthy pregnancy, no complications of any kind. So I'm feeling like he's wanting to induce me out of convenience. I definitely don't want to be induced unless I need to be, so of course since I didn't ask any questions, I'm now freaking out a little. I have an appt (which should be just a regular weekly appt) first thing Monday morning, so of course I'll be asking questions then. I just wanted some insight from those who have actually been induced.

Re: For those who have been induced

  • I was induced the day before my due date because I didn't have any amniotic fluid left and, as a side effect, baby wasn't moving much.

If there's nothing more than being effaced and 2 cm dilated I'm also surprised that your doctor would talk induction already.  I think it's smart of you to go to your next doctor appointment with some pretty specific questions for him.

At my 39 week appointment a week ago Tuesday, my doctor was willing to induce me.  I think it was more because the last u/s I had the baby measured at 7lbs.  As of last Friday at my 39.5 week appt, she was measuring at 8lbs.8oz.  I would point blank ask your OB why she/he wants to induce you.  At my 39 week appt, I told my OB I wanted to wait until at least my due date.  On my due date, I told her I wanted to wait at least one more week.  I will be induced 1 week past my due date if LO hasn't come on her own.  Unless there is a medical reason, you can deny being induced.  Also, I do have to have NST's now that I'm past my due date.

    Edited to make sense.

  • I was induced at 41w2d. My doctor would have waited until 42 weeks but I caved and asked to be induced. I wouldn't have agreed to an induction at 38 or so weeks. I would definitely question why!
  • I was induced at exactly 38 weeks because im a type one diabetic and they didn't want the baby to grow to large. If you dont have to be induce I don't recommend it. I was in labor for two days because I believe aiden wasn't ready to make an appearance.
  • My first was induced because I had preeclampsia and protein in my urine. This LO had an induced day set due to GD but we didn't make it to that date. I ended up getting pitocin because my blood pressure was high, wasn't dropping and I want progressing during labor fast enough.

  • @snuff9861‌ amniotic fluid naturally declines at the end of pregnancy (it's usually at a peak around 35-36 weeks). In some pregnancies it's just lower than others, but it can really be impacted by dehydration. I have low medium level to start with, then it's been hot here and then I got diarrhea, all causing it to drop more because I'm dehydrated. Coconut water makes a huge difference! I'm hoping to avoid an induction, but could get one if my fluid drops too low. FX it was okay today.

  • Inductions can be done for all sorts of reasons. Doctors seem to push them these days even when they are not medically necessary simply as a matter of convenience.
  • I've got an induction set for 6 days before my EDD due to pre-e symptoms; I wouldn't have agreed to one early if it weren't medically risky to wait.
  • I'm being induced on Monday at 38 weeks, 5 days. My doctor recommended induction during the 38th week with twins and most of what I've read supports that idea so we didn't push back.

  • i was induced at 40w3d with ds because my fluid levels were dropping (towards the end, the placenta begins to degrade) and i was past my due date. with my daughter, they diagnosed me with iugr and wanted to induce at 39wks but my water broke the night before the induction.

39wks seems to be the magic number for most drs; baby is a good size, most likely done developing lungs and brain, and mom is ready to get baby out. if you have reservations, though, i would definitely discuss them with the dr. it is your choice, ultimately unless there is a health risk involved.

I never leaked any, but like @Temurlang1 said it declines naturally. Dehydration might have played into mine but my doctor didn't think so. DD had simply stopped producing it and when it was discovered I was basically completely out.

  • My due date was June 11th and I delivered Wednesday at 530 after 23 hrs of labor! My water broke early Tuesday night, admitted to hospital within a half hr of it breaking.

By wednesday morning I was only 1cm and 50%effaced. I was given pitocin at 730 am and after that all went down hill. They kept losing his heart rate, epidural didnt work and needed to be redone, I had contractions one right after another with no progress. Come 530 we were only 6cm and his heart rate would not come up. He was delivered via c-section. Pitocin was not any fun and I had bad reactions including uncontrollable shakes and sweating.

Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different but if I had to do it again pitocin would not be a choice If it was not needed. Let your little one cook as long as possible. It is not harmful to them or you.
  • Thanks yall! I'm definitely NOT wanting to be induced if it's not necessary. I'm willing to goto 42 wweeks if I have to! I'm anxious to speak with my OB on Monday to see what his deal is. Like I said, I'm pretty sure he's wanting to so it "just cuz".

With DS1 I was supposed to be induced at 41 weeks, but luckily I went into labor on my own at 40w4d. I very much enjoyed the experience of getting to go into labor on my own, so that's what I'm hoping for this time too!

I was induced at 39 weeks 5 days due to PIH that kept looking more and more like pre-eclampsia, I would definitely not have agreed to an induction before my EDD if there were no medical reason though.

I was induced with DS1 at 38 weeks and 5 days, because I was leaking amniotic fluid. My levels were still good, but it had been leaking for a week and I had already been to L&D a few times. (They told me I was peeing myself.) Fortunately my doctor believed me when I told her what was happening. Thankfully I was already at 4cm so my delivery went smoothly.

My doctor had previously mentioned she'd be willing to induce due to his size, but I told her I didn't want to unless medically necessary. It became necessary. I think most doctors are open to inducing because of the scheduling convenience.

  • My due date was June 11, but on Tuesday I was induced due to low fluid levels. The Thursday appt before it was at an 8.1, then dropped to a 3.6 Tuesday. Unfortunately, the two weeks of contractions had done nothing. Cervadil got me to 2 cm, pitocin was hell. I got stuck at 3 cm and then again at 7 cm. The epidural didn't take, and the first spinal didn't... Then the thurs spinal numbed me so far up that I couldn't swallow. The whole process took 42 hours and ended in a csection.

Honestly the easiest part of all of it was the c section. The doctor discovered when he opened me up that Landon's face was in my hip and his top of his head was angled into my cervix so he could feel him during checks. I got stuck and couldn't prgress because the contractions weren't shoving him down against my cervix. I would not induce if not medically necessary. It was a hell of an experience. I am so glad he's here but it was not an experience I want to repeat. Definitely ask questions!!!

    Good luck and happy thoughts.

  • I have induction scheduled for my due date, because my blood pressure was up during my second trimester. Dr said even though it's been normal since, she doesn't want me pregnant any longer than I need to be, due to concerns regarding micro vascular damage that could have occurred to the placenta when it was high.
