Permanent BC

Has anyone looked into this?  I am on the fence about doing Essure or just going with tubal ligation.  I currently have Paragard and hate the damn thing.  Oh my lord, the cramps and the gore.  Bleh.  We're done having kids, by choice and by doctor's orders, so I figure why not just move on to a permanent solution.  I'd like to make a decision in the next couple of months, but can't find any good sites to help me compare.  I am concerned that since I hate Paragard, I'll hate Essure too.  Any ideas on good sites?  Anyone know someone who went with one method or the other and how they felt about it?

Re: Permanent BC

  • My OB said to have DH get snipped unless we decide to go for #3. In that case she'd do a tubal during my c/s.

  • Whatever you do, dont get a tubal. It was the worst decision I ever made. Once I had it done I had terrible heavy periods and horrible cramps, headaches, I was irregular nothing was normal about my cycles anymore.
I got my tubal reversed in 2011 so we could try for baby and I noticed the difference immediately. My cyles were shorter, and I had hardly none of the terrible pms and headaches I had from before. I'll never get another.
Frankie is getting snipped, the recovery is much easier for that procedure.

  • I'm getting my last tube tied off during my c-sec. May as well kill 2 birds with one stone.

  • H will be getting a vasectomy once we decide we're definitely done. Right now we're 98% sure but I don't want to rush into it.

  • I had a tubal back in September and yes my first 2 periods were heavy but I had also only had 1 other period in 2 years so I expected it but so far I love it!

My SMIL told me horror stories about her tubal and the heavy periods and cramps but so far I haven't had any of it.
  • Yeah, I'm more than a little nervous about a tubal. My mom had one after she had me. Her tubes grew back together without her realizing it, and she ended up with an ectopic pregnancy that ruptured and nearly killed her.

It's just that Essure is relatively new and since Paragard is hurting so bad and giving me horrible periods, I'm concerned that Essure will be more of the same. So I'm worried about unknown complications and that by trying to be in less pain from paragard, I'll make it permanently worse with Essure. Does that make sense?

Our permanent solution will be H getting snipped.  We're hoping for 1 more and then we are done :)

This for us as well. My H actually volunteered to get snipped, I didn't even bring it up. So fine by me :)

  • I will be that person here, you are talking a lot of bad about the Paraguard but how long have you had it? It takes a while to regulate and for your body to get back to normal after having a baby, Yes it sucks for the first 6-12months but I would rather deal with that then going in for surgery...I mean its good for 10 years and if it doesnt get better than you can decide on a more permanent solution vs being hasty and going in for a surgery that could make your periods just as bad if not worse.(I recommend your H getting snipped but thats just me)

I don't mind you pointing this out! I wasn't clear in my OP. I was trying not to be too wordy. While I want to decide between the two options in the next few months, I wouldn't actually change things until the Paragard has been in for a year, unless I continue having issues as bad as my last period. Since getting it put in, of course my cycles have been wonky and the cramps have been more intense, but I expected that. But this last time was as painful as my miscarriage, and my tampons couldn't keep up with it. I ended up ruining two pairs of pants and I was changing the tampons every couple of hours. It lasted a solid 5 or 6 days.

So anyway, if I end up not being able to handle the paragard anymore, I want to have my backup plan in place. I don't see being able to tolerate that kind of pain for more than a few more months.

  • As far as DH getting a vasectomy, that may be the way to go. I had originally told him I would do the essure procedure after we'd had Paragard for 5 years, since it was so simple. When I started wondering about other options, I didn't really consider him getting a V. I'll research that as well.

Thanks for all your input ladies!

  • I had Essure done. I haven't had any side effects and my cycle has been normal on it. Most of the negative reviews about it I have seen have been people were allergic to the metal in the coils. It is also an easy process that does not require any cutting. I would recommend it.
