April 2014 Moms

Longer sleep stretches...

We have finally made it to longer sleep stretches. She is 5.5 weeks, 10lbsish and sleeping 9-4. Yay! However, I cannot get her to go back to sleep after that 4 am feeding. She will dose off while feeding/burping, but the second I put her down she wakes up. Anyone else having this issue? Part of me wants to feed her and then really play with her for an hour to wear her out, but then I am trying to keep her calm too and do all the sleep methods(dark room, no eye contact..etc) to get her to go back to sleep. It's so frustrating. She generally doesn't go back to sleep until 6-6:30 and my other kids are awake around 7-7:30.

Re: Longer sleep stretches...

  • Why not try putting her down for the night at 11 so that she sleeps till 6?

  • I had this problem when DS was around that age. We would have snuggle time on the couch and I would doze on and off. Now at 8weeks she is going back to sleep after her early morning feeding (does similar hours, 9:30-5ish then 5:30-8ish)
  • my DS is 7wks he does that too but he will be up for 1-2 hours and go back to slep if she is dosing off that means she is tired. are you letting her fall asleep on her own once you put her down? or you pick her right back up when you see that her eyes open? use a paci it helpsi usually let him grunt and stuff for a litte bit while he puts himself back to sleeo if he doesnt then i pick him back up i sing and rock him and he is good

Ps: sorry for any mistakes is hard to write while pumping lolo and with one hand

  • This exactly the past few days, DS is also 5.5 weeks. All this week we have been starting our day at 730 but this morning my husband took him downstairs played with him for awhile and then put him in his swing, has been back to sleep for a few hours. I am not a fan as using the swing this way but this momma needed her extra 2 hours of sleep this morning!!

DD had a few days in a row where she did the same thing (though wasn't having as long of a stretch leading up to the 4am feeding), and then it stopped. Now she goes back to bed until anywhere from 6:30-8:30. I usually just held/rocked her- one morning she was so alert I stayed awake with her from 4-6 and then she finally dozed off. Hopefully it's just a phase!

My kid only sleeps 3 hours at a time and wakes up for the day at 3:30 am so I don't know what to tell ya....I've just learned you need to have very loose and flexible expectations for their sleep at this age. You can only do so much.

  • Thanks for the advice. I know it's all temporary, but having a harder time with this one than the other two. Probably because I am older and there are two others to take care of. Ha!
  • You put her back down and she wakes up....what happens if you just leave her there?  When our LO does this, we just leave him there laying quietly and he's almost always asleep in 5-10 minutes.  We watch/listen on the monitor to make sure he isn't crying.  But he's usually perfectly content to lay there on his own until he falls asleep again.
