My 2 week LO is what the lactation consultant described as a "sensitive sucker". She constantly wants to suck. She hasn't found her thumb yet (although she tries)and I refuse to give her a pacifier.

While in the hospital a nurse gave her a pacifier without my approval and I noticed nipple confusion right away.

Has anyone had a similar problem? She seems frustrated and upset and I don't know what to do.

Have you tried offering her your knuckle or pinky to suck?  Are you open to her comfort suckling at the breast?

And nipple confusion can definitely happen as babies suckle differently on artificial nipples than they do at the breast.

I agree try giving her your finger to suck on. That always worked for us. Good luck!

Same advice here with the knuckle! My LO never really found his fingers to suck on.

I also used pacifiers for both my kids. Never had a problem. Breastfed for 15 months with DS1. Maybe try a different brand. DS1 gave up the paci at 6 months on his own. DS2 is 5 months now and hardly uses it. It doesn't cause problems for everyone.

We started with a finger/knuckle and then graduated to a pacifier. I was afraid of nipple confusion, too, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. How do you know there is nipple confusion?

I introduced a paci on day 4 and DD didn't have any confusion. It might be worth it to try again.

With both my LO's, we introduced a paci at around 2-3w. It was fine. There was no confusion.

Honestly, I'd rather my kids sucking on a paci rather than their thumb. You can take the paci away eventually, you can't take the thumb away.

We also gave DS a pacifier during the first week. Never had any nipple confusion at all.

I noticed lo latch changed when I gave him the advent pacifer, but once switched back to the soothie gumdrop one it improved. Might be worth trying a different type. Or offer your knuckle of you do t want comfort sucking at breast all the time.

My baby is EBF and I have given him a pacifier since day 1 and he knows what the difference is between the pacifier and breast.. I am not ready to give him a bottle yet though.
