What else are you reading?

I don't know what's happening with the book club these days, but I would love to hear if there is anything else you are reading. If you're reading the news or a cereal box, I'd love to hear about it!

I picked up a book called Terry Jones' Medieval Lives by Terry Jones and Alan Ereira while on vacation last week. If Terry Jones sounds familiar, he was a member of Monty Python. This is a book version of a documentary series he worked on for BBC, where the aim was to dispel some common myths about what it was like to live in medieval times. It's an interesting read and written in a conversational style. So far I've read the chapters on peasants and minstrels, and right now I'm reading about outlaws.

And, I've just downloaded the latest issue of Buffy Season 10 onto my Kindle, so if DS manages to nap a little longer, I'll read that over a bowl of soup this afternoon.

I'm home with the little guy today. If I have time I'm going to catch up on policies. I have about 10 of them to read.

  • I am going through and rereading all of the Anne books for what might be the thousandth time.  I just started Anne's House of Dreams this morning.

  • I'm reading a literary novel called "Why did I ever." After that I will probably read "Salt Sugar Fat" by Michael Moss. I've been reading a ton lately at night. DH and I haven't been getting much one on one time at all because we've been doing alone time instead (it's one or the other in our house since we're so low on sleep that we only really get about an hour a day to relax.)

  • I have a BF book and Natural Hospital Birth (or something along those lines) that I need to start, but the Game of Thrones set came in two days ago, so it's going to be tough to do the nonfiction thing for a bit. I also am way, way behind on sewing projects. :(

  • I'm reading The Birth Book by Dr. Sears and next is The Thinking Women's Guide to Childbirth. After awhile all of the natural birth books repeat the same thing.

  • I'm reading Under the Dome by Stephen King right now.  I started it awhile ago, then sort of took a break from it when we went on vacation because my Kindle isn't great in the sun.  Now, I've picked it back up.  I gave up on Divergence.  It just wasn't doing it for me.

I'm reading articles for the final class in my BA right now, woop! It's about children and technology use.

I also started Farenheit 451 a while ago but school reading has been a higher priority so I haven't gotten too far with that one.

  • Trying to finish A Song of Ice and Fire before my new Merry Gentry novel comes out in a few weeks.

  • I've been going through The Attachment Connection: Parenting a Secure and Confident Child Using the Science of Attachment Theory. It goes age-by-age up to 4 years (I think?), so I'm currently sitting at the 2-year-old chapter. I've like getting the science side of G's development and growth. She also helps me to think outside the box with how I react to G sometimes. I'm more likely to get creative with how we interact if it's obvious that he's not responding to what I do initially.

Otherwise, I've been toying with re-reading the Harry Potter series. I used to do it every summer (which started in preparation for the new books which were released in the summer), but I haven't read them in a couple years. Our house is kinda like @CarolineEmma 's in that we often end up choosing between alone time, together time, or sleep.

I'm also frantically trying to finish up a ton of sewing projects before Little No Name shows up, so I haven't been reading much.

I'm reading the Strain trilogy by Guillermo del Toro. But I hate switching back and forth and just want to finish the Divergent series already.

If you're into short stories I'm reading "blasphemy" by Sherman Alexie. He is amazing. Also, short stories are great for busy mommas, and he is kind of a pro at them.
  • I only just picked up the Hunger Games series after watching the second movie, so I'm going to do that. Next on my list is to reread the Old Kingdom trilogy and A Prayer For Owen Meany. Then I don't know what.

  • I am reading Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. Before that I read Eleanor and Park by the same author. I should probably start reading some baby books though.

I looooove Rainbow Rowell. She's so great!

I'm reading Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson. Before that it was The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy and Love and Other Foreign Words by Erin McCahan.

How come?  Have you tried turning the brightness way down? I keep mine on almost the lowest setting when I read and then it doesn't bother my eyes.

  • Yeah I binge-read the Hunger Games series too. I started the first one out of curiosity then got hooked.
  • I just finished the Hunger Games series for the 3rd time. It's like HP, I never get sick of it.
I tried to read Divergence a few months back and couldn't get through it, so while I didn't join on on the CDBC this time, I was intrigued by The Night Circus in the options and decided to read that. Really loving it so far.

Have you ever tried a book light? I bought one several years ago when I was a camp counselor, and I love that I can read books in bed without bugging DH now. At camp, we also clipped it to another counselor's hat and used it as a makeshift headlamp when we went frog-hunting after a rain storm. :p

I will have to get a book light. I think my brain blocks screen reading because I love real books so much. Lol

  • I'm jealous that you all have all this time to read books.  I'll be needing beach book recommendations in a few weeks.

Also the Giver is one of my all time faves.

The Giver movie comes out later this year, I hope they do it justice.

I find movie adaptations of books to be disappointing in general.

I completely agree. As good as the HP movies were I still like te books so much more.

I also loved the Hunger Games series and it was a quick read. I haven't seen the movies get though.

ETA: I like the books better because I can imagine as I read instead of having everything just shown to me on a screen. Much more enjoyable.

I haven't even watched the trailer yet.

I'm usually disappointed by adaptions as well. They just never live up to the books. HP and THG are definitely some of the best ones, though.

The one exception is The Princess Bride. Great book, brilliant movie.

True love is the greatest thing in the world-except for a nice MLT - mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe
The only movie I've watched more than Spaceballs.

When DH and I are watching a show and a fight is about to go down, one of us will almost always say, "My name is Diego Montoya. You keeled my father. Prepare to die." (Yes, I know. The real name is Inigo. We just kept saying it wrong and it stuck.)

  • I'm reading Am I Screwing Up My Kids? by Lysa Terkeurst with a few other mom friends, and we get together and discuss it weekly.  It's really good but is written with a good dose of Christian-influence which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea.
I'm also about to start reading The Giver because I somehow went through all of middle school and never had to read that book.
Does the Kids book have any advice about two-year-olds? I am struggling big time.

  • @unaveragejane‌ I've heard good things about the Love and Logic series. It's next on my list of parenting books to read. After I've finished indulging myself in escapist fiction and history.

  • @freezorburn - Oooh, I forgot they make an L&L for parenting! I read part of the one for teaching kids with special needs, and it was good. I'll check it out.

@SAK - I'll definitely have to try this one, too. Will you be my book club if I don't find any local moms who want to read it with me?

We did a L&L class at D's school. It's brilliant for toddlers and teenagers. I'm not finding it very useful for the "tween" ages though. I can't get him to admit that his actions are his responsibility.
