Im looking for feedback from anyone who has refused the 28 week glucose or found an alternative to the OGTT drink. I simply cant voluntarily injest something knowing it contains yellow #6 . Anyone find an alternative?
Have you ever read the warning labels on things. Almost everything has the label that states that there is stuff in it known in the state of California to cause cancer....OP do you avoid those things too? It's also been known that cell phones cause cancer too. And don't get me started on microwave radiation....
i doubt the small amount of dye is going to cause(or correlates) cancer...I'd rather have a healthy child
Ok, don't shoot me too, but I do believe that some people are sensitive to artificial dyes and colors and can understand why a sensitivity or allergy may be a reason to look for alternatives to the drink. But it to think that you're worried about getting cancer from the one drink is really extreme. This is one drink and its an important test. Bring it up to your OB and see if there is an alternative but if not, suck it up and take the test.
Let me guess, you're probably not going to vaccinate either?
A super granola posted this on FB a few weeks back.... I agree with everyone that taking the test and finding out if you have GD is more important than a limited amount of these chemicals/dyes.
Did you ask your doctor what alternative they have? I did hear you may be able to eat a bunch of bananas instead, but you should really just be asking them.

But bananas contain potassium which is radioactive. Eeks!
Seriously, I'd much rather risk ADHD than a still birth. Look up the risks of gestational diabetes....
Oh and I found the orange drink to be delicious, so I guess I'm a yellow#6 addict! And, I had to take the 3 hour test, so I drank it twice. Guess I'm a horrible mom!
I just had mine almost an hour ago. I found mine to be pretty tasty. Yellow #6, yum!
My god! Yellow #6 caused my childhood cancer diagnosis. Where do I sign up for the lawsuit?
Andplusalso, On a serious note, I have GD and there is NO WAY in hell that I would risk my child's health by being an uncontrolled diabetic just because I'm scared to drink dyed sugar water. Fucking stupid.
Thanks very little for all of your responses. Complelty aware that correlatation does not imply causation. And yes i vaccinate. Even more sad that when pooled together, women would rather make fun than support. I actually read of the 2 banana test and will use that. Yes i read all labels and attempt to eat as cleanly as possibly. Never did i say i was not planning to take the test... Putting my 3rd child at risk but simply looking for a more natural alternative . I certainly do not believe in just doing what everyone else does . Questioning authority is a radical idea? Come on ladies your smarter than that.
My concern with a 2 banana test is that if it was that simple and accurate, why wouldn't all of us use it? It is bound to be cheaper than the drink and I would think insurance companies would insist that you do a cheaper version of the test if it was just as effective at diagnosing GD.
And I get where you are coming from about wanting to avoid dyes. I really am allergic to certain dyes that make things orange (it is speculated that it is one of the red dyes, not the yellow one). It is not that it makes me feel funny or hyper, if I was to have orange soda I break out in hives all over. But, the gtt is likely to make your baby bounce all over the place. Not because of dye, but because the test itself requires you to ingest a large amount of sugar.

Stuffing 2 bananas in my mouth within 5 minutes sounds a lot worse than a dyed drink, even if there was enough sugar in the bananas. Yuck...bananas are filling, and I don't think I could eat them that fast.
After several years of gut issues, I followed a really strict diet last year with zero processed food (including dyes) which finally helped me heal so I know what it's like to have to avoid everything. Frustrating at times, but well worth it in the end. I still have to stay away from processed stuff if I want to function normally.
I was actually more concerned about the brominated vegetable oil in the glucose drink than the Yellow #6. Coke and Pepsi are phasing BVO out (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/05/05/coke-pepsi-dropping-bvo-from-all-drinks/8736657/) and it's currently banned in Europe and Japan as a food additive. I'm not sure what it was in the drink, but the only time I've felt like I wanted to puke so far this pregnancy was after the drinking glucose drink. I didn't, but I felt really awful.
I found a recipe on the Midwifery Today website that was 4 tablespoons of sugar, a squeeze of lemon, and water. I used that recipe to take my test yesterday and my midwife had no issue with it. I'll get my results back tomorrow.

The problem with the Hb1Ac test is that it indicates what your blood glucose has been over the past 120 days. However, for most people, GD sets in after 20 weeks - and you take the test between 24 and 28 weeks. So, unless you had a baseline Hb1Ac test done prior to getting pregnant or early on, there is a high likelihood of false negatives - and many people will have undetected GD if this was the primary testing method.
This exactly. I'm Paleo and I did not do this test for this exact reason. The GD test we're given is provided for a reason. I took it without qualms or worries about following my Paleo lifestyle because it's for the baby and one drink isn't going to be the end of me or this baby.
@stoofewok, this seconded! Before getting pregnant I was also following the paleo diet for two years. I had to give it up during first tri because of serious food aversions/nausea, but I'm slowly working my way back to it and plan on continuing for as long as it makes me feel good. I'm also a "crunchy" person who only buys "all natural" makeup and skin care products, who once washed my hair with just baking soda and apple cider vinegar for months, clean my house with only "green" products, etc, etc. I even feed my cats the stupid expensive "natural" food for their sensitive stomachs. I fully believe that while there are lots of bad things in the environment that we're exposed to on a daily basis that I can't do anything about, maybe there are a few things I can control somewhat and so I choose to change the foods I eat and products I use. But I didn't think twice about this drink - it's one time in my life, and so important to know for the baby's health and mine.
I understand you may be upset, but I do think you need to think of it like you do with any medical intervention.
For example, aspirin is an artificial substance that causes excess stomach acid--that sucks!! why would anyone ever want to ingest something that could give them stomach issues.
Oh but wait, if you have a heart attack, aspirin reduces your chance of dying from a heart attack by 60%.
Dying sucks worse than a chance of stomach acid. Take the aspirin.
Uncontrolled diabetes sucks and could kill your baby. Take the test
In your everyday life you can avoid food dyes because you are right--they aren't great for you , but neither is radiation treatment, chemo, insulin, etc... but sometimes in medicine we have to do things that aren't ideal in everyday circumstances to try to prevent dying.
The other option would be just to have them diagnose you with gestational diabetes and have you track your numbers for the rest of your pregnancy.
Why in the shit would you have an A1c done instead of a GD test?
That makes no sense at all.
Some people who follow Paleo choose request to do this or an alternative test because we have a high chance of failing the 1 hour. Case in point - me...I failed the 1 hour. However, the 3 hour is usually good enough to turn over the false fail from the 1 hour (also, happened with me - I passed the 3 hour).
With Paleo, your sugar intake is really only obtained from dark chocolate and fruit, so the glucose 1 hour drink is a huge shock to your system after a long period of time without it. I had done my research and knew there was a high probability I'd fail the 1 hour.
However, the 3 hour is a better look at how your system digests it and is a good enough test for Paleo followers to show that their systems can handle it (if they are not destined to have GD to begin with, obviously).
Which makes me wonder, @FrodaBaggins, did you fail your 1 hour?
@stoofewok, I passed it at 24 weeks, after going off the paleo diet back in December. However even though I was totally off and eating tons of stuff I shouldn't have been eating, I still made an effort - I only had coconut/almond milk, creamer and ice cream, ate plain yogurt with berries, Ezekiel bread and almond butter, tried not to go over 30g of sugar per day, etc. But even with that I was unsure on how I'd do with the glucose test, since it was high numbers that prompted me to go paleo in the first place! and I'd been consuming pizza, macaroni and cheese, and burgers indiscriminately. No lettuce wraps to be found. Buns and all. Like I said...slooooowly coming out of that and back to normal!
@FrodaBaggins - That's awesome that you passed! Trust me, I have not been a goody-two-shoes either. I've been eating my fair share of non-Paleo splurges. Prior to being KU, I was at least 95% Paleo or better each week. I'd say I've hovered at 80% during pregnancy. Wonder if there are more of us out there? I'd love to do a Paleo mama check-in post pregnancy!
I was not strict Paleo but definitely Paleo-inspired/directed diet. I'd be interested in a post pregnancy check in!

I too was not comfortable with the ingredients in the drink for various reason, and took the glucose test with 10 ounces grape juice (50 g glucose). Blogged about it here: https://veganchronicle.wordpress.com/2014/04/29/glucose-test-it-may-be-vegan-but/

Crap. This means you have cancer. I am sorry.
Well I had it once already. I'm going for round two! And I'm trying to give my kid ADHD...obviously.
Bananas are horrible. I'd never be able to take the test due to all of the gagging and puking and general two year old behavior that would ensue.

You could try the Hb1Ac test which was mentioned in a post by Robb Wolf about Paleo diet followers and the glucose test: https://robbwolf.com/2008/06/25/gestational-diabetes/
