Follow up on my ON question

So I posted the other day about my ON diapers smelling.

I took your advice and bought new detergent and bleached all of my diapers to start fresh. They all smell perfectly clean and there is none of the organic type smell left.

But this morning DDs diaper still had an ammonia smell to it (only after peeing) so I'm not sure where to go from here. I did a hot water strip a bit ago and it seemed to help a bit but not 100% and it came back rather quickly.

I would greatly appreciate your help in what to try next.

The ON diapers are BG Freetimes. I use an HE FL. We have city water and I have no idea if it is regular or hard/soft.

Thank you!

ETA: ON diaper is the one that smells.

Re: Follow up on my ON question

  • What kind of diaper smelled like ammonia? Daytime or ON?

Sorry I didn't make that clear. It was the ON diaper that smelled.

  • And was it right after she peer that you smelled it, or after she had been in it all night? That should say peed but I cant get kindle to let me edit it.

It was in the morning that I smelled it, after being in it all night. She STTN so I'm not sure if it would have smelled right away or not.

  • Okay, ammonia smell after a whole night in the diaper is fairly normal. If your LO starts waking up with a very pink diaper area, then you've got cause for concern b/c it means that the ammonia is building up in the diaper and causing some burns. Personally, I would try to switch to a non-microfiber diaper for ONs b/c natural fibers are, in general, easier to clean. Also, one of the best preventions for ammonia build-up is soaking the ON diaper in hot water for a few hours after each use, and I'm afraid that would deteriorate the outside of AIO like Freetimes pretty quickly. If a Freetime holds for your LO all night without leaks, you could probably get away with a prefold and doubler under a cover. Judging by your ticker, you are headed for the "learning to roll" aka "MOTN leaks" stage soon, so fitteds and covers are another good option.

Thank you so much @unaveragejane! I really appreciate your help. I always check her diaper area and she's never had any rashes or anything thankfully, so I will keep an eye out.

Now I must go shopping for fitteds and covers lol Anyone have recommendations for skinny legged babes?

Sbish snapless multis are a good option if you don't have heavy wetter.  Twinkie Tush and Twinkie Tush Night Nights are well loved around here for heavy wetters, but I've never tried them.

If you don't have a heavy wetter and don't want to drop $20 for a new fitted, you could try a GMD workhorse with a hemp or bamboo doubler.  Or as Jane suggested a bamboo prefold with a doubler works well.  That's what I've been using on my toddler since like 9 or 10 months with good success.  I think you'd want to snappi/pin it on if you have a tummy sleeper or one who moves around a lot in their sleep.

For covers, I LOVE Blueberry coveralls because they have lots of room to fit over a bulky fitted.  Thirsties Duo Size 2 are also a good choice.  There's also wool, which is a pretty bullet proof option.

I have a skinny boy, and pretty much everything that @CLLDLL said has worked for us at one time or another. It really depends on how much you are preparing to spend, and whether you like snaps or snappis or pinning. Pins especially are good for getting a snug fit on a skinny baby. But I still find them a big nerve-wracking when DS is fighting me off during a diaper change. And I won't trust anyone else to pin his diapers, so thankfully he has chunked up enough that he can wear TTs and occasionally someone other than me (DH or a babysitter) can get him ready for bed.

Blueberry has a discontinued fitted that is pretty beefy and might work for a not-too-heavy wetter. You might be able to find some used ones floating around out there. If it seems that DS has taken in a lot of liquid before bed I will add a hemp doubler to the outside of the Blueberry fitted or Sbish, and that usually provides enough of a booster.

    Thank you @CLLDLL‌ and @freezorburn‌

The one place I buy from sells sbish and BLueberry coveralls so I think I might start with that and see how it goes.
