TTC after 35

What are you reading.

I'm half way through Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and it such a long book I need to start looking for my next read to motivate me to finish it. The book is 700+ pages I think. Don't get me wrong, I do like it but it is very slow going.

So let's talk books. I'm pretty sure we have a few readers among us.

I have been reading mostly NYT best sellers but I enjoy a steamy romance/erotica book once in a while.

Re: What are you reading.

  • The last book I read was Gone Girl, you probably already read that.  If not, a good and easy read.  I am struggling the same thing, I am going to San Juan for few days to relax by the pool with my girlfrind, so I need a good book to read too.
  • Loading the player...
  • I like Nick Hornby's books for light reading - you can knock one out in a few hours, and they're usually very funny. I like A Long Way Down and About a Boy.
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....
  • @jchow009 I have had that book on my reader since it came out and havn't read it yet. Maybe Gone Girl will be it.

@Austrogermokee I have never read Nick Hornby but I will look into his books.

  • About a Boy and High Fidelity have been made into movies, and I think About a Boy is a TV show now. His books are really funny and sweet and the same time.

hooligans4 - I have heard good things about "The Goldfinch" - let me know your thoughts once you are done.  And yes, 700 pages does seem long!

I finished "The Interestings" by Meg Wolitzer a week or so ago - great book.

I am now reading "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" by Katherine Boo - very good so far.

Other recent read I would recommend: "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand

I also read "Too Much Happiness" by Alice Munro - short stories.  It was ok - just never fully got into it but normally I like short stories.

Has anyone read "The Opposite of Lonliness" by Marina Keegan?  I saw that at the bookstore the other day and it looked interesting (go to BN to scope out books I want to get for my kindle) :)

Edited to add comment re: Goldfinch

  • I love Wally Lamb, She's Come Undone is by far my favorite book and I re-read it every year. All of his books are great, but intense.

I am a big chick-lit fan so Jane Green and Jennifer Weiner are my two favs. I just finished Jane Green's latest and it was good, the name of the book escapes me at the moment. And Jennifer Weiner's latest (she wrote In Her Shoes which was turned into a move w/ Cameron Diaz and Toni Collete) comes out next month. Can't wait, I've already pre-ordered.

Let me know if you need more...I'm a book-a-holic!

I seem to be on a Terry Pratchett bender. I've read his two new ones (Steam and Dodger), so I'm going back to look for old ones I haven't read yet. I just bought Thud.
  • I'm a big reader, too, but I haven't bought a new book since 2012 or checked an adult book out of the library since 2013 (no time!) DH is going to get me Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam for Mother's Day (yes, i know it's past, but he has no time either) because I love her and loved the other 2/3 of the trilogy.

Right now I'm reading Dreams of Joy by Lisa See (bought in airport in 2012.) it's ok.

@hooligans4, I agree, tell me how you liked Goldfinch. I loved The Secret History and The Little Friend.

@austrogermokee, so cool to find another Nick Hornby fan!

@CaraH, I haven't read much Terry Pratchet, but I've liked what I've read. Are there books of his you'd recommend?

@lady2010, a lot of what you mentioned is on my someday list! I like Alice Munroe, even though I'm not much into short stories. Did you read The Beggar Maid?

Sorry for all the typos I'm sure are in here. My phone's acting stupid.

@Davie813, if you like Margaret Atwood, "A Handmaids Tale" is the book I loved when I had to read it in high school.

My favorite go to romance authors are Julie Garwood and Nora Roberts.

@soontobeshrader, my favorite chit lit author is Sophie Kinsella.  She wrote the Shopaholic series, but I think "Can You Keep a Secret" and "The Undomestic Goddess" are the funniest ones so far.  You may like her if you haven't read it already.  The are in the style of "Bridget Jones' Diary."

The last good adult book I read was Dan Brown's "Inferno."  Did not expect the ending.  I loved the Hungar Games Trilogy also.

  • I just read "The Orphan Train." It was a little bittersweet from a TTCAL stand point, but it was well written and captivating.

I will have to try some of your rec's. I agree you have to read Gone Girl.

I love Elin Hildebrand summer romance books. She lives in Nantucket and I have gone there for work almost every year so it's neat to read about the places she mentions.

I'm into thriller/ supsence books so I love James Patterson, Alex Kava, and Karin Slaughter especially when they continue with the same characters. Lisa Jackson is another fav.

The Babysitter from Diana Diamond is really good. Love Kristen Hanna books. Some are sad though. Lisa Scottoline another favorite. One Breath Away I couldn't put down by Heather Gudenkauf but warning it's about a classroom held hostage. Keeper of the Light by Diana Chamberlain another one. Can't remember the others.

Obviously my books are easy reads lol. Gosh I've read steamy books but can't remember the authors! Been awhile :)

I recently read two from the Call The Midwife series. Amazing.

Just finished Instant Mom, a quick read  recommended for anyone considering adoption.

And I recently discovered Jen Lancaster, a nonfiction humor writer. Her style isn't for everyone, but I've enough (literal) LOL moments, that I keep reading :)

Thanks for all the other suggestions!

  • If you are looking for new authors, I highly recommend Diana Gabaldon's series The Outlander.  One of the best I've ever read, and anxiously awaiting the next book this summer.  I've read them all multiple times. I can't rave enough - and it's coming out as a series on Starz in August!

@Radiantly - wow, you're reading War and Peace?  I've had it on my Kindle for 3 years and got through a quarter of it (if even).  I just can't seem to get my head around it :p

I have a recommendation - really fun read "Why Men Marry Bitches".

I read part of it to my DH (before we got married) and he totally laughed (and confirmed a lot of things).
