We are planning to circ and I am clueless as our first was a girl. What was the scariest part and how long did it take? I've heard that some can't get them while at the hospital bc they are too small? Any advice is appreciated. I don't know why I can never remember to talk to my drs so we have a better idea of what to expect at our specific hospital. Tia

We had it done at the drs office about a week and a half after my son was born. Our insurance company only gives you 30 days to have it done so you may want to check that out. The procedure only took 20 minutes and I tried really hard not to watch. They put a little gauze over his Weiner and said to put a little Vaseline on it for the rest of the day but that was about all the after care it required. I was also told I could give him baby Tylenol which I did but after the first dose and a nap it really didn't seem to bother him. I think it was harder on me then it was him

I agree with PP it was harder on me than him. I had his done the day after he was born. I would also look at how the hospital wants to be paid. Ours required a cashiers check beforehand. So DH had to bring one in before they would do anything.

Thanks ladies I agree it will be harder on me I am terrified but my girlfriends all tell me once it is over I will be less anxious. Really glad you both had different timing because both are questions regarding payments I wouldn't have thought of.

Absolutely harder on me than him! Lots of Vaseline on his penis so it doesn't stick to his diaper. It is scary looking at first (bright red and some blood) but heals within a couple of days. My guy was a week and a half old but that's because he was in the NICU and they don't do the procedure until they are being discharged, otherwise it would have taken place within a day or two of being born, at the hospital.

Thanks! We're doing good adjusting to life at home! Fyi, our hospital sent us home with squeeze tubes of Vaseline, but if yours doesn't, definitely invest in it because it's way easier to put on !

My first two boys had theirs done as an outpatient procedure at the local children's hospital because they had a hypospadia. New baby had his done yesterday in the nursery by my OB. It took 15 minutes. I wasn't bad with his getting done yesterday, maybe because it's my third go around. With my first two I was a mess.

DS had it done in the hospital. He was only out of the room for a few minutes and was calm whrn he came back to me. One tip, be aware that baby will probably pee through some diapers since the Vaseline can make the absorbency less effective. We had lots of full outfits changes in the beginning.

Our OB did it at the hospital. DH went with him and said he didn't even cry. They did it the day we were going home, and the first time I saw it was kind of hard for me. I think it was all my hormones, too, because my mom and DH were there and said it looked fine, but I broke down crying because I thought he was in pain. It honestly never seemed to bother him, though, and it was fine in a day or two. Taking care of it while healing was easy, too. Ask your OB what their policy is.

I'm not sure if it's going to be the same with this little guy, but when I had DS1 5 1/2 years ago, my pediatrician group is the group on call, and checks out all the new babies. The dr. took DS1 the next morning and did it in the nursery. He was gone 20 minutes. The key difference is, DS1 had a plastic ring around the tip to keep the skin down, we were told to wipe gently with a warm wash cloth, and that the plastic ring would fall off in about a week. I'm wondering if we're gonna have the plastic ring with this little guy too, it wasnt bad, just weird.

My doctor said they would do it before we leave to go home. I am going to try to be there for it but depends on how I am feeling. I really don't think n my husband will be down there because he sees blood is not good for him.

I am glad you posted this. I've been wondering when it would be done for other people. My doctor said that they don't do circumcisions at the hospital anymore. I talked to one doctor that I had planned on using for the pedi and he said that baby would have his well baby checkup at two weeks and then we would schedule it from there. Um..he'd be like three weeks! That freaks me out so I am choosing to use a different pedi that was recommended by a few different people.

Mine wasn't covered by insurance so definitely check into that. I paid my obs office ahead of time, and my dr did it the day we were discharged. They came in about a half hour before to put a little pee-pee hat with numbing cream on him, then took him out of the room for maybe 10 mins. He was fine with it and I'm glad I didn't see it. My sons kept reattaching as it was healing even after the Vaseline, so we had to constantly pull the skin down for a few months. I was told this is common, that was the one thing I didn't expect and was hard on me to have to hurt him over and over.

Just a word of caution....I like to do my research on this kind of stuff, and looked into the different methods they use for circumcision....I would NOT recommend doing that.  There's a lot of good info out there, but the pictures are pretty scary looking.  We made the decision to do it, but I wish I didn't have those photos floating needlessly around in my brain, especially since based on other's stories it really seems to not effect them so much. 

My OB is doing it for us in the hospital, the day after birth.  Since it's such a quick procedure and I doubt they let you hold his little hand during, we probably won't go with.

DS had his done at one day old in the hospital and this little guy will too. they do it in the nursery and parents are not allowed to be in there but I waited outside the nursery the whole time because I was freaked. they give them sugar water and they really don't seem to mind it at all, it was a bigger deal for me than for him. the biggest thing is to make sure you are using plenty of Vaseline on it at diaper changes and pulling the skin back to make sure it doesn't re-adhere.

It was performed by my OB in the hospital. He was gone for all over 5 minutes. There was nothing scarring about it for us so I wouldn't agonize too much. My biggest question for the doctor is the type of numbing agent they use. Certain old-school docs don't use ANY and that is absurd to me. The type of circ didn't really matter to us. Our pedi does a different style than my OB but he said she did a terrific job so clearly both types are OK. They whisked him away to do it so I am not sure if he cried or not but the nurse who was there said he slept through it.

i wish my ds had this! we did it at the ob office and i ended up having to open the sterile bags of tools while the nurse held his legs open. it was HORRIBLE. lidocaine isn't worth crap. also, the dr never told me that i would have to keep pushing the skin back down daily to prevent adhesions, so a couple weeks later at the ped, we had to "rip" the skin back to break those adhesions. again, HORRIBLE. i would ask for the bell thing every time if i had another boy! my ped explained that now they are doing circs differently and not taking off all of the foreskin like they used to, so this bell thing sounds really helpful.

We had ours done about a week after DS was born.  I delivered at a hospital with midwives, so if we wanted it done at the hospital, we had to use the on-call pediatrician.  I asked the nurse I got close to if she would recommend us doing it there or waiting, and she checked who was on call and said we should wait.  Not sure why exactly, but I trusted her!  We took him outpatient to the midwife offices and a midwife did it using the plastibell method.  It was super quick and easy to care for, and DH looked like it shook him up way more than DS.

FTM here but I have info because I'm still on the fence on what we are doing. Our pediatrician doesn't do circumcisions, and since we are birthing at a center and not a hospital, we will have to go to a pediatric surgeon or urologist. They said they won't do it if the baby exceeds 10 lbs, or later than 10 days after birth. They said the best time is around day 7, because that's when baby's blood starts clotting on it's own. If we decide to circ, we will go within the first few days and def use the surgeon. Apparently at the hospital they don't always numb or anesthetize before cutting, but the surgeon will, so I feel a little better about that. They said it should not take longer than 15 minutes and baby often sleeps through it if they are numbed. Also, our insurance (BCBS) does not cover circumcision, and it's roughly $400 to get it done in my area.

Thanks ladies I am definitely armed with questions for tomorrow. Held off on the Vaseline hoping they give me squeeze tubes or I can find some at cvs. I have BCBS so I hope our plan covers this I don't know how I missed thinking about this sooner.

Ours was done right in the hospital as well, and each doc uses a slightly different method.  For us, I don't know the name of the method used, but we got a fluke where there was a little excess tissue on the underside of the penis, which wound up harboring staph somehow (this still confuses me) for months, starting right before his first birthday.  We wound up having a revision to remove that skin and it solved the problem. 

Since we are having a boy again, I brought it up to one of the other docs in practice and learned that we have a choice as to the method used!  So, no matter the doctor, we like the idea of the Gromco(?) method, as it seemed pretty precise to us.

Needless to say, if we hadn't experienced the fluke we did the first time around, I'd just have let them take him off to take care of it again.  It's good to be informed, so I'm feeling pretty confident.

Well I talked to my OB.   They will do it in the hospital and they will take him to a special room they have specifically for this.    We are not allowed to go with him but it should not take more than 20 minutes and they use a local and some sugar water.   I can't remember the method she stated but I felt very comfortable with what she was describing and the safegaurds they have in place.   All of the OB's at my practice perform them and I have met and am comfortable with all of them so that is positive.  She also told me they put the the tubes of vaseline in the bassinet supplies and I can ask for more to take home but it will heal fairly quickly.   Thanks for all of your input ladies - I am feeling much more informed and at ease.
