I am a volunteer FF and am TTC. I work one 12 hour shift a week and i realize that at a certain point i will have to limit myself to light duty but just wondering about the earlier stages of pregnancy and what other people have done?
I am also a volunteer ff and work full time as a medic in an ER. I continued to do shifts with the fd until a week before I delivered. We have a low call volume and when we did get a fire call, I just drove the appartatus. On medical calls, I never did any lifting. I was on light duty and on/off bed rest during the first trimester due to a subchorionic bleed. I didn't do any shifts during the first trimester. I find it hard to do any shifts now that I have my son.
I think i am most worried about the early stages, before i want people to know i am pregnant, or maybe before i even know. Usually there are only 2-3 people on a crew at a time so if we got a fire i would most likely have to go in a IDLH environment
That's going to be your decision. As long as you had a good seal, it would be fine. But I personally wouldn't take the chance. You never know what could go wrong.
I'm also a volunteer FF/EMT, my full time job is a court clerk so that's a little easier. As far as responding while pregnant, I told the chief and the officers as soon as I knew. On fires I would drive and operate pumps out of the hot zone. For medical calls I did assessments and basic procedures but didn't do any lifting.
