Do you have a will (poll)

Speaking with my mother this weekend was enlightening, because I realized that she and my dad don't have a will. They're in their mid-50's so that's ludicrous to me. We don't have many assets yet, but we established one for the sole purpose of declaring a guardian for our kids if we were to die any time soon. Are we the oddballs?

I voted SS because I have one but it is in desperate need for updating.

Yes, and for anyone hasn't done so already, you need to look into getting term life insurance. Stat.

It also makes for good jokes about killing your husband for the $$$$

ETA: didn't mean to jack the subject, but it's along the lines of "adult" things you need to do so I threw it out there

We don't have one but we have discussed who we would leave the kids with if need be. We don't trust anyone with our kids so that doesn't help We need one though.

We met with an attorney a couple of weeks ago and our will is being drafted.

We're hyperorganized in this area: living will, healthcare proxy, life insurance, living revocable trusts on both of us.

My siblings, mom, and I were discussing family heirlooms and which ones mean the most to us, when I asked my mom if they actually had a will.  She said no, and I was very surprised.  They own their house, have partial ownership of a vineyard, a timeshare in FL, several cars, valuable antiques, etc.  I couldn't believe they didn't have one drafted yet!  So, when we started discussing the topic, I asked my sister if she'd considered who would care for my nephew if something happened to her.  She said, "Yeah, I've considered it.  Congrats!  You'd get a new kid!"
Of course, I'd love to take him, but she'd never discussed it with me prior to that moment, so it got me thinking that maybe we were weird or morbid for thinking about that sort of stuff.

No, but I've been thinking about that for the last couple of months... I really need to get on the ball. As well as take care of my medical power of attorney since we are unmarried, that way my psychotic mother or xH aren't the ones who get dealt that task in the event something happened.

Yeah, we don't have a will, but I made sure we both got life insurance when I was pregnant. We've talked about it & I still have no idea how to choose which one our families would get LO. I guess that's a good problem to have, since they're both good options, but it makes it hard.

We had one drawn up when DD1 was about 6 months old, also mainly for the purpose of declaring guardians for her (and future kids). We actually just updated it a few weeks ago to include LO specifically -- the first one just referred to "future children", but the lawyer said it would be best to update it with both kids' names.

ETA: Choosing guardians IS hard and we went back and forth, but decided on making my parents the guardians, since there are two of them and they live 20 minutes away. DH's parents are divorced and my FIL lives 2 hrs out of state. There is no way MIL could handle 2 kids on her own, even though she also lives close by. They each would have as much access as possible. However, once BIL is married, guardianship would transfer to him as my parents will eventually be too old to keep up with young kids.

Nope and it's scary to think about. We've considered guardianship and likely it would go to SIL, because she has the financial means to care for our child. Likely LO would still spend a lot of the time with MIL and FIL. If/when my brother gets married and more settled, I would consider him also. My parents are not suitable for long term guardianship, and although my ILs are, financially they couldn't do it.

I answered yes bc I think it goes with where you were going, but we have slicing trust rather than a will. Probate in CA is ridiculous!!
