had my first pregnancy scare

I posted about my twatwaffle MIL in the post about the baby showers (quick summary, she almost ruined it acting like a 12 year old girl who didn't get her way), and about who my DH and I chose to be god parents for the baby (aka not her younger son). She caused so much stress and drama it was ridiculous. Anyway, I had my bi weekly check up on Monday, which I figured was routine. Nope. I had an internal exam and the doctor found I was a fingertip dilated all ready (I was 32 weeks and 3 days at that point) so I had to be hooked up to the machines that check heartbeat and contractions. Sure enough, I was contracting every three min and had no idea because I didn't feel anything. I was admitted to the hospital for more testing. So, I got hooked up to the machines again and  had 2 iv bags dripped into my body since apparently dehydration can cause contractions. I was told I was having a few contractions in the two and a half hours I was there, but nothing super serious. I am not allowed to work the rest of the week and am on bed rest 3 days and have to take it easy after that. The only good things out of this were my husband got out of work early, and I got another ultrasound yesterday. Baby weighs 4 lbs 2 oz all ready! The doctors are claiming that dehydration may have caused all of this, but I don't think so. I chug water all day. I haven't been stressed this entire pregnancy, and the one time I do, I wind up in the hospital. Ugh. Thanks for letting me vent, ladies. Have any of you been checked in for this kind of thing before? It was so nervewracking.

Re: had my first pregnancy scare

  • The dehydration thing seems to be pretty common, someone mentioned the other day that you could potentially be dehydrated because you haven't had enough sodium to help your tissues maintain the water? (or something like that).  Maybe try adding in some sports drinks with electrolytes in addition to the water?

  • I just went in Saturday for that exact thing except I was feeling my contractions-and they were painful. The same thing happened with my first pregnancy, I'm thinking now my body just likes to do a dry run at about 35-36 weeks. Definitely a little scary. Glad everything is ok for you! Stay rested and hydrated :)
  • thank you all for the support! i was terrified because my husband was at work and my mom lives 3 hours away. i will try the pedialyte thing. i have been laying off salt for awhile since i have been retaining so much water and the doctor suggested if i am concerned about all of that water weight to stop some of the salt intake. guess that kind of backfired.
@yellowbird219 i know about the taking it easy thing! it sucks! all i want to do is wash baby clothes and put them away, shop for the things i still need (holy diapers!), and organize the nursery. i like having things done way in advance, but this laying on the couch thing is putting a damper on my plans.

So sorry about your scare! To answer your question, yes. Just Wed i was ar doc due to some pelvic pain and was also dilated 1cm, monitored contractions, and sent me to hospital because they were 1 minute apart. I was shocked!! They never did figure out why I was contracting, but also mentioned I had to ensure I was drinking enough water. I was told to "take it easy" and will be leaving work at 36 weeks. This is in part due to my pubic symphasis separation. Aye! Best of luck to you!
  • @mercy0606 I am so sorry you had the scare too! it was terrifying knowing you are doing everything you can for that baby, but some things are just out of your hands. I fill my pretty pink nalgene bottle up with water and chug from it all day. Not like I need to pee anymore, but it is what it is. Good luck! Relax and know you're almost there!  :)

At 31 weeks my doctor discovered I was already 1cm dilated. I was pretty severely dehydrated after a field trip to the zoo (it was not a good day). She put me on bed rest for a few days. I was also sore the point I could barely move. Fortunately the bed rest helped. I had her check again at my last appointment, just for peace of mind, and I'm still at 1 two weeks later.

With my first pregnancy I was walking around dilated for weeks, so try not to stress too much. Do take it easy and rest when you can.
