Let's talk pull ups

I'm not thinking about potty training (although if he keeps it up I will start sooner than planned). To say we battle during diaper changes is an understatement. It takes two adults to change him because he throws a fit. My dear friend who has twin 3 year old boys thought I was a newbie wimp and she even gave up. In stead of the 10 min battle my mom suggested just doing pull ups. He's a big guy. About 32 inches and 25lbs but he just turned 11 months on Monday. I see the 2T-3T pull ups start at 16lbs. Any BTDT moms have any suggestions?

Re: Let's talk pull ups

  • I agree with 3timemom. My niece uses the pull on diapers and she likes them.

  • I think diaper changes are awful for everyone at this age, I just deal with it and try and be fast as I can.  Distract him as much as possible with a toy or making sounds to him.   Eventually its over.

  • Pull ups aren't that absorbent-- they let LO feel when they are wet. If you're not thinking about potty training I'd hold off and maybe try Huggies pull on diapers.

I'm confused though - how would this solve the diaper change battles? I'm asking because we also have epic diaper change battles. But it's not any easier putting pants on him than it is putting a diaper, so I'm not sure the pull up diapers would help us.
Pull on diapers would at least make it easier to put it on while he's on his belly, standing up, etc. Getting the diaper to line up correctly and the tape in the right place is not very easy when he's crawling away. :)

  • Size wise pull ups will fit him. My 2yr old is 24lb and the 2T/3t pull ups are really tight (target brand).

A is horrible with being changed or getting dressed. I am pretty good at getting her diaper or clothes on in any position and usually it is a many part process.

I wouldn't bother using pull ups but I never use those even when I do train my kids. They do have diapers that pull up if you prefer a pull on as PP mentioned. It couldn't hurt to try. Good luck.

Before I read this I thought you were going to say you were going to train your 11 month old. A just turned 11 months too and I just couldn't imagine training her yet.

Diaper and clothing changes are awful for us too, but pull ups are more expensive and not as absorbent and when you do get to the potty training stage, they're a waste of time and delay the process. I do think huggies makes a diaper that you can pull on and the sides open for removal because trying to deal with a poopy pull up is a nightmare. But I'm not sure how they differ from pull ups and they may be a marketing scam.

Just read the the huggie slip-ons reviews- people seem to like them. I feel like my life could get easier with these, so glad I read this post!

  • I have been looking into getting the Hulabye Happy Changer. It would also take 2 adults to change DS. But when we are by ourselves DS gets a bottle when it's bottle and diaper change time. The bottle helps to distract him. Although this week DS hasn't really been putting up a fight which is nice and doesn't make me feel incompetent as a mom.

Here is what the Hulabye looks like in case anyone is interested.

Edit I am not sure if that is a real thing but I think A would freak if I strapped her into something like that. It also could not stop her body contortions, she is incredibly flexible. She is usually changed on the floor at this point, just easier. That baby looks content.

To be honest I wasn't really sure it was a serious idea.
  • I've used pull-ups and they weren't any easier. I found that keeping a good repertoire of nursery rhymes worked better. I just keep a couple specifically for the changing mat and now she just lies there and grunts for me to sing them every time.

Thanks everyone! I'll look into those huggie ones. Last poopy diaper change left us with poop on the wall. I'm seriously going to use this story when he's 16 and has his first date.

They have those pull on diapers. I think huggies makes them. Pull ups are more expensive and you don't get near as many in a pack. Honestly pull ups are a waste of money, it's just a diaper they can pull up and down.

This if your worried. Also it helps to change LO on the floor with a toy.

FYI I'm getting ready to potty train my 2 year old and the daycare director won't allow pull ups because they are actually hard to get down and off. We have to use old fashioned training pants for him.
