DH used to work retail with a gorgeous but ditzy girl. When entering a customer's credit application, she asked what the woman's occupation was and the woman replied, "I'm a homemaker." Ditzy girl typed it in, then followed up with...
Since I've never *really* been a complete SAHM ever (always had at least a small part-time job) I generally alternate between "dance instructor" or "childcare", whatever I'm feeling like at the moment. I would NEVER put down "housewife". That just sounds odd. A few times I have just put N/A. If you don't have a job, then the question is not applicable.

Personally I leave it blank- always have even when I worked.
I love to tell this story:

"And, how long have you been making homes?"
And then I collapse in giggles. Again.
