MRSA at daycare

So, apparently, there have been 2 cases of mrsa at daycare and they didn't inform us parents. I am pretty pissed. It is a small daycare and almost all of the parents know each other, so obviously it is going to get around.
I understand illnesses go around, but all I am asking is that we are informed so we can look out for symptoms, right? How do I bring this up tomorrow? I have had zero other issues with this place, and I want to keep ds there. There aren't any other good options in town, and I love his teachers

Re: MRSA at daycare

  • Licensing laws in WA say that daycare has to inform parents of communicable diseases at daycare but I worked at one that got around that rule by saying that it wasn't a confirmed case unless a note from the doctor was brought in and they posted it on a bulletin board around the corner that nobody saw/walked by. That was sketchy.

I would bring it up to them as a heard through the grapevine thing and see if they redeem themselves.

What the hell? I feel like MRSA is one of the things parents should know about immediately since it can get serious fast and can present as just a kind of infected wound, right? Or do I not know what MRSA is? I agree with saying you heard about it and wanted to see if it was true. If yes, definitely ask that they keep you informed about this shit next time.

  • Exactly. It can get serious fast , which is why I would want to know asap

  • I think you can start off the conversation that nice, but I would make it 100% known that this is not acceptable.  At DS's daycare, we get an email sent any time there is a case of anything.

And, yes, MRSA is extremely serious.  DS caught it, and he was hospitalized and quarenteened from all other patients.  It was very scary and there was risk of surgery.  He had IV antibiotics and then oral ones for ten more days.

Bottom line is you should know ASAP.
  • Ugh MRSA. So scary. I'd be very upset if I hadn't been informed. My SIL had it on her stomach and they had to pack it with stuff and she was on IV antibiotics for a bit. Not a good thing. Now she is more susceptible to recurrances. Hopefully it wasn't a serious case and that it doesn't spread any further.

  • I'm sorry. I'd be pissed about the lack of communication also. I had a CA-MRSA infection (a random infected pimple on my stomach...weird) a few months back. They drained it and put me on antibiotics for 2 weeks and it cleared right up. My mom actually is being treated for it right now (infected cyst on her face).

Fortunately, DS didn't catch the infection when I had it, so thats a plus. According to the dr, community acquired MRSA is everwhere and pretty easy to catch..but also easily treatable, if its any consolation.

As a parent, I'd certainly want to be notified if something like this was going around DC. Even if its something easily treatable. I'm all for communication. How matter how small of a thing it is. I'd definitely bring it up to thw director and see what they say. As for wwatching for symptoms...just be on the lookout for any infected pimples/bumps. FX that you have nothing to worry about!
