Pregnant after IF

Coming from IFV: Late onset OHSS question if you don't mind...

Hi ladies! I'm sure you get these crazy question all the time, but I can't quite find what I need when I goo.gle, which I should just stop doing anyway!

After ER, I was a swollen mess, which I expected since my E2 was high and they got a lot of eggs. I was put on Dostinex after ER to help keep OHSS at bay or at lease mild. Yesterday, at 6dp5dt in the evening, my abdomen swelled by about 2". Today, it's been the same and now there is pain in my abdomen, similar to after ER where there was fluid build up. I've only gained a pound since yesterday. Hopefully, that parts over because it's not pretty!

Don't worry, I called my RE's office and they're having me check back in tomorrow with my weight and waist measurement. So, here is my irrational fear...could it just be horrible gas? My RE wants to move up my beta from Friday to either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on tomorrow's numbers. However, I am terrified that I just have horrible gas and I'm overreacting and he's moving the beta for no reason at all and I'll look like an overreacting idiot. Has this happened to anyone? I am fully aware of how insane this sounds, but I just can't believe that it's anything else. I'm completely irrational and my H thinks I've lost it. I even took a tu.ms just to see if it helped...not so much.

Feel free to laugh at this, because in a normal world, I'd think it was a nutty question, too. But, if you had late onset OHSS, what were your symptoms? If that is what this is (and not just one giant fart or poo) it isn't as horrible as after ER, but still uncomfortable and it's worse in the evening today, too. I look like I'm 5 months along and that's just impossible to hide. So, if it is gas, I need to know what caused it so I avoid it for the rest of my life :)

Thank you all so much for entertaining my insane IF brain. I really appreciate it!!

  • I hope you're pregnant! The first sign of my BFP was cramping and the return of OHSS symptoms at 5dp5dpt! I tested positive on HPT at 6dp5dpt. My symptoms were the same as yours. That's probably why your doctor wants to move up your beta. Did you take a HPT?

  • I had mild OHSS and the beginning was rough. I remember the bloated, swollen feeling that just wouldn't go away and honestly, it did feel like things just needed to get moving down there for me to be comfortable. But passing gas and going to the bathroom didn't give relief. About 4-5dpt I was starting to feel bloated and crampy again after a few days of feeling better. Pregnancy hormones can increase the OHSS symptoms, which is why if you're anticipated to have horrible OHSS they'll do a freeze all. For what it's worth, it does sound more like the uncomfortable OHSS symptoms than just gas.

I would listen to the doc and let him move up your beta. Don't be alarmed if the numbers are low since you're early, since anything over a 5 is a good number and anything that doubles is even better.

Praying extra hard for you :)

    This.

I had horrible OHSS, but we did not do a fresh transfer because of that exact reason.  My E2 was super high, as well, and I had a ton of eggs so fresh wasn't even an option my RE gave me because if I did get it PLUS being pregnant it would have been ugly.  Like katekat said, pregnancy hormones mimic OHSS, so it's possible that you are pregnant and that's what's happening.  That said, when I did get my BFP, I didn't have any of the OHSS symptoms return at all.  I was definitely a little bloated, but not OHSS bloated.  I wouldn't worry about your RE moving up your beta, they're the experts so you have to trust them.

    Good luck and feel better!

  • What the others said. As horrible as you feel, it might be a very good sign. Please take is seriously and follow up though, because if you are pregnant, it will just get worse, and you may need to get drained. My OHSS was already bad enough at ER that my RE insisted that we freeze everything. Good luck!!!

  • I ended up in the ER with OHSS the day before my beta. The ER gave me a beta of 150. I am pg with twins :) I thought it was my appendix or gallbladder as we only got 7 eggs.

My RE drained 1.5 liters from me and I still looked 5 months pg. I hope he sees you soon and takes care of it and that your beta is +!

  • Thank you ladies. It hasn't gotten any bigger, no smaller, but not bigger. However, I was up with sharp pains in my abdomen around 2am and that lasted for a lot of the morning. My nurse said to take my Dostinex everyday instead of every other day and stay hydrated. Since things didn't get worse over night, they're keeping my beta the same, but I have to call every morning with an update on weight and measurements so they can keep a close eye on things.

I really appreciate all of your input. It's a little scary, but I still have a hard time buying that it means anything. IF makes us so cynical I guess.

After this bloating incident...no :) I'm weak! DH bought me some tests today and one will be pee'd on in the morning :) But, it makes me nervous because, like that, this could all be over. I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

  • Sounds like it could be a good sign. I had early OHSS so didnt result in a bfp but i looked 5 months pg and could hardly walk at times. When i ate it hurt extremely bad and was uncomfortable when sleeping. I had to prop a pillow under. I had a little more severe...they ended up draining 2.5L. OHSS is no joke so hopefully if thats what youre experiencing it stays mild. GL!

  • Congratulations on your BFP! :)

It will probably take a few weeks especially since you got a BFP which I think makes the bloating even worse. Around the end of my 5 weeks is when my stomach finally started to shrink. My RE said by next week (7 weeks) it should be completely gone. Drink plenty of fluids and try to keep your urine clear - that will help!
