Goldfish

We went to my son's PTO carnival and they were essentially giving goldfish away to the kids before we could stop them. : )
Each of my older boys got two goldfish each.  We have no clue about fish, and we didn't having anything else to put them in, so they have been hanging out in buckets since Saturday.  We bought aquariums yesterday, which I hope are large enough.  I don't want to spend a ton on these fish.  I prepped one last night, and I plan to finish the other tonight.  How should I transfer the fish?  The bucket water already looks pretty nasty.  I hate to get it in the new aquariums.
Any other tips?  I told the boys they might die, so they are checking on them often to make sure they are still alive.  I just know they will be sad if they do.  We don't have any other pets.

Re: Goldfish

  • I always heard that you are supposed to make sure the temperature of the water is the same and then transfer. You don't have to dump that nasty water in there with the new water. Make sure it has a filter.

only feed them what they need. They can overeat.

  • yes- you don't want to shock their little bodies- either scoop them into a cup with a little of the bucket water (a little won't hurt- it will get filtered out) and then slowly set the cup into the aquarium and let them swim out into the new aquarium.

temp the water too- just to make sure.
  • To help them adjust to the water temp, you put them in bags of their current water, tied at the top, and float them tank that they are about to go into, for a few hours. Be careful not to over feed them. A hungry fish is a healthy fish.
