Stay at Home Moms

Do you look forward to the weekend?

I'm so naive! Every week I'm like, "oh good, here comes the weekend! DH will be home, I'll get a break, we'll share some of the childcare responsibilities, family time, la de da".

It's never like that. We bought out house last July and DH is overwhelmed with work that needs to be done at home. I end up keeping DS busy inside all day so DH can finish building our garden, mending the fence, etc.

Saturday seemed like the longest day ever. Thank god it's Monday!

Re: Do you look forward to the weekend?

  • Nope, DH is in the restaurant business so he works weekends. Saturdays, especially during college football he doesn't get a break during the day and is gone from 9 am to at least midnight, it makes for a very long day. He does have Sunday nights off, so I look forward to Sundays.

  • I always look forward to the weekends, but they're not always as nice as I imagine they'll be. Sometimes we really dedicate them to fun family stuff, or at the very least I'll get more help with everything, which is great... other times DH has different commitments or needs to take on projects around the house, and Saturday just ends up feeling like a week day. But, in general, weekends are still more fun and more relaxing than the rest of the week.

  • Yes, I totally do - I wake up Friday mornings totally thinking TGIF! We bought a house last fall, too, though, and for the first few months we had so much running around and fixing up to do every single weekend. I'm glad that we can pretty much take it easy and spend time together now on the weekends.

  • Yes, if DH is home because of family time. No, if he is gone. I actually hate weekends when he is gone.

  • Totally depends on the weekend....whether DH has to work (and therefore is not actually around :-P), if we have plans etc. I tend to enjoy the weekends, but I also enjoy getting back into our routine on Monday....like my quiet coffee-and-computer time during the morning nap can feel pretty heavenly. :)

  • Yes, not only do I love the break and the help, I love having DH home to hang out with.
  • Love weekends. DH's job has been sending him out on several layover routes (he's a truck driver), so he's usually gone two to three nights a week now, but always home from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. Weekends are bliss.

I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
  • For sure. We try to commit one day to getting stuff done around the house and one day to going fun places with the kids.

  • Yes, I get to sleep in on Saturdays and DH sleeps in Sundays, then we get out somewhere and usually have lunch out one or both days, and then come home and put the kids down for nap...and I usually join them!

I usually do look forward to them. Even if it is a weekend where we will be too busy to get a lot of family time (like this weekend coming up), the routine is still different, which is nice. Usually one night, DH and I stay up late and watch a movie or we get together with friends, go on a date, something... it breaks up the monotony.

But I know what you mean, it is nice but it is not always sun shine and rainbows like I hope it will be hah.

  • Not really. Usually DH works til late afternoon on Saturday and now that spring time is here Sunday he works outside on the weekend. Plus DD is on semi house arrest but completely enforced on the weekends so we don't go anywhere.

Definitely!  DH doesn't usually work on Fridays, so we get a three-day weekend together.  That gives us time to hang out as a family, do something on our own, do stuff around the house, etc.  Of course, it is never long enough.  : (

  • Love weekends, especially on weeks DH has Friday off. He works 9/80s, so he has every other Friday off. I hate it when we have a bunch of stuff to do around the house on weekends, though.

  • Your Saturday sounds like mine. I start out the same way you do, all excited. Never turns out well. Someday I suppose he'll have free time. Just not any time soon.

  • Yes, I love the weekend! DH does a lot of the baby care stuff, we get to spend a ton of time together, and we get a lot done around the house. Plus we gave church and small group on Sundays, which I always look forward to.

    This!
  • My Dh works shift so we don't have normal schedules! This week our "weekend" is Tuesday-Thursday! I definitely look forward to his time off! I enjoy spending time as a family and my girls are always better behaved when he is home! Ha!

OP, I'm on mobile so idk if you have a siggy but how old is your LO? My girls love playing outside while Dh does that sort of work! Maybe y'all could go outside with him!

My DS is two. He LOVES to be outside while DH is working. He's obsessed with tools and building things but when DH is trying to get stuff done I end up following DS around trying to keep him from scattering all the nails, or playing with the nail gun, or running out of the open fence into the street.

  • YES! No school :) No alarm clocks!  Not that I "sleep in", anyway, I don't usually. Maybe 30 minutes. My internal clock wakes me. But after I wake, I can relax. No breakfast immediately, no getting dressed right away or ready.. I can sit with my coffee until it's done.  I totally allow DD to play on the iPad when she wakes on weekends, so i can do the above.

And I love to spend extra time as a family, and with DD and H.

pretty much this. DH is a chef and works crazy hours.plus a lot of catering events- he has to go on the road with them sometimes. we get him the occasional Sunday and every Tuesday.
  • I love the weekends. We don't have to set an alarm and get up. We usually do something fun and I enjoy having H home.

  • DH works in the winter/summer sports business so evenings and weekends here are always busy.  I finally came to a realization when DS was small that if I want things done/time off, I've got to hire it out..  Instead of the weekend, I look forward to the days that DS has daycare because those are the days that I get a break to work on things.  I love both kiddos and the hubby dearly, but getting work done around the property falls on me and DH gets overwhelmed watching DS for 20 minutes on his own, let alone a full day of both kids...  We don't have family willing to take the kids for a few hours and let's face it, there are projects you don't want a 2-yo around for when you're trying to accomplish...

Pretty much this except not the iPad but probably only because we don't have one.  If we did my weekend mornings would be even more relaxing!
  • I know what you are talking about. It is better now that little man is getting older. He rides on the lawnmower. He can follow more directions about helping, or just staying out of the way. And He takes over for bath time getting ready for bedtime so that I get a small break.

  • Yes, when it's not planting or harvesting time. Then we don't see DH hardly at all. Otherwise, it is nice to just relax and have someone else around. DH usually gets up with DS1 so that gives me a littke extra time in the shower or bed.

  • I used to. Then we put our house on the market and now we have to pack everyone (including our 2 dogs) up and stay out all day, which since we have the dogs, usually means hanging at the inlaws, with their 2 dogs:/ yes, that is every bit as awful as it sounds. Every weekend.

  • Yes! I try to get house stuff done during the week so none of it is left for the weekend. No alarms and family time is wonderful. DH gets up with the kids and I can take an extra long shower. We don't see DH much during the week lately because of work stuff, so he spends a ton of time with the kids all weekend.

  • Nope, we are like you in new house mode.  Luckily, DS goes outside with DH a lot to help, but there are just some thing he cannot help with, so it is a matter of keeping him entertained enough to forget about his dad.

  • I love weekends too because DH can help out with DD and she behaves better when he is home. Right now we are getting the patio ready and doing some outside chores on weekends.  DD helps DH and that gives me a small break

  • Yes. I love having DH home even though we typically have a lot of projects or something to do. It's still family time and not being outnumbered by the kids is always nice :)

  • I have 4 boys, ages 8,10,13 and our newest-6 weeks. My husband works 6-7 days a week, and my 8 & 10 year olds are in baseball. We are constantly busy, especially since we are currently sharing a car. So really the only thing I can truly look forward to is not having to wake my kids up at 5 am to get them on the bus!
  • My bff just moved from CNY to Florida so weekends aren't as fun anymore.  Actually, our weekend "group" went from 4 families to just 2.  It is still fun, but I miss my friends and having automatic plans.  We had a house built last year, so while crap isn't falling apart like in our last house, DH is dying to start some projects.  It has been nice having him around, but I know he wants to start finishing our bonus room, building a swing set, etc.
