Maybe my perception is colored because we don't have curbside trash pick up. I'd much rather do a few extra loads of laundry than have all that extra garbage to deal with. I just don't get all the extra work that people think it involves.
I think it's all that free time not spent cleaning up blowouts and washing sheets and baby clothes and running to the store in the middle of the night because you ran out of diapers that worries everyone. I mean, what would they do with all that free time? Play with their kids or something?

personally i spend all my extra time bumping
I don't get free time. I have to wash the damn things 12 times a day. And I only use one for overnight, so... Do the math!

have you considered switching to cascade?
and use the dishwasher instead of the washing machine while you're at it.

I have only been CDing for about a month and love it. LO was a little small at first I used sposies. At about 3 months old someone told me they KNEW I wasn't going to CD and had just wasted the money I had spent. That lit a fire in me to prove them wrong. It's so easy, I love it! Even my nieces (ages8-15) love her diapers and think its so cool that they are washed. The oldest is about to get her first job and wants to but LO a "super cute butt" to ware around her.
I never give up. On anything. Bc I'm stubborn.
But cding has never been an issue. I heart it.
This is me too. I especially don't give up if someone tells me I will.
Cloth are so much better. No poopsplosians!
Really, the biggest issues with cloth diapers vs. disposables is laundry. It's just a little more laundry, which you're going to have with a baby anyway. No big deal.
My family and friends can see I'm clearly CD obsessed, so they don't pass along any negative comments. I've had a lot of people ask about them and had many a conversation about the fluff. If she was in sposies, I'm pretty certain I'd not be having conversations with people about her diapers.
I gave up cloth diapering overnight, for naps and on the go. It's so easy to cloth diaper at home, so much that I only use two sposies a day at most, but I love our cloth still and I feel like I'm still being green by cloth diapering at home.
It's refreshing to hear from people who use a combination of sposies and cloth! From my point of view, every little bit helps.
I'm CD part-time too. Our LO was so tiny when she was born and she didn't fit into the BG 4.0's I bought, so we got hooked on disposables. HonestIy, I don't mind them at all! I think they are easy and have always worked well for us...and...I don't feel like we spend that much money on them. BUT...I love CDing too! They are also easy and doing cloth while we are at home totally works for me.
I'll admit that friends and family gave me gruff about CDing when I was pregnant and I let them get into my head. That's part of the reason I waited so long to actually start CDing. I was afraid that they would all be right, but they weren't. Sure, sometimes it's gross to have to wipe poop off of a diaper, but I have to wipe poop either way, so it's really not any grosser than the alternative!
No reason to give up. Sposies were a flipping nightmare for us. My little man is not only and explosive pooper but a super soaker and we tried every brand of sposie they all blew out for him. I love cloth its not like I do anymore laundry then I did when I had to wash his clothes, bouncer, sheets, etc every flipping day due to blow outs. You can do this once you get your wash routine down its easy peasy
The description of your LO pooping everywhere coupled with his grinning face in your sig is just too much! He looks like he's proud of his messes!
oh he was/is always proud. He thinks it's hilarious and giggles like crazy when he poops. I just ask him did you poop and if he did he smiles so big I know I am in for it. At least with the solids it's gotten slightly less explosive
I tend not to put too much stock in what other people think about what I'm doing. It's none of their business anyway.
CD has changed so much since DH and I were in diapers, so I didn't say anything until the grandmothers came to help with DS, and I said this is what we're doing and they went along with it. Both of them have been really impressed by modern CD. My mom said the plastic pants used to cause a lot of rashes, but once DS outgrew his wetness sensitivity he has been rash free, and she thinks it's because the PUL breathes so much better.
Like others we use the occasional sposie for travel, and DS's current DC makes us bring sposies but I'm hoping to change that. He is only there 2x a week anyway.
Now and then I have a day when I don't feel like lugging diapers downstairs to the washer, but now that I have more diapers than I need, I have a little flexibility in how often I wash.
We also have more than we need right now-i think I have enough for 60 changes. I'm getting lazier with laundry, and will go three days if my covers are good. But M is close to outgrowing most of the prefolds. Obviously I just need more covers so I can trifold.

I know someone who gave it up too... That person also did not do any research and used really cheap diapers. (And also didn't use the rise snaps on her 3 month old... doh!)
My XSIL gave up after I bought her a whole NB stash. She tried for like 2 weeks and then gave up completely. I was very frustrated with her since she wouldn't let me help and essentially wasted all my money. Of which I had very little of at the time.
I gave up for a few months. I had a miscarriage when my daughter was about 18 months. I became really depressed and kind of let things slide with the CD laundry. We didn't CD for 6 months and then went back to it when I was a few months pregnant with my son. I love CDing. After doing both for any length of time I just cannot imagine doing anything other than CDing.
I bought a bunch of prefolds off of a lady who gave up b/c she said she couldn't handle the poo once her LO started solids. I thought about telling her about this handy invention called a sprayer, but I was getting a really good deal, so I kept my mouth shut. Don't judge me.
Sure people give up on cloth. Usually it's due to one or more of the following: 1) being surprised that their newborn leaks out of one size diapers and giving up instead of buying diapers that fit or waiting until the OS diapers fit 2) using crappy Baby City or other $2 eBay diapers or Gerber prefolds and wondering why they leak 3) not increasing the absorbency when their kid truly needs it and instead blaming the diapers 4) having an inappropriate wash routine and wondering why their diapers stink and/or give their baby a rash 5) buying all of the same kind of diaper and then getting frustrated that it doesn't fit or doesn't provide enough absorbency
I had a friend CLOSE to giving up. She bought only BGs and was putting them on her daughter unsnapped to the biggest rise at only 1 yr old and she's a skinny minny! I live in a different province from her so unable to trouble shoot visually for her we emailed back and forth got her diapers stripped and figured out it wasn't compression leaks, and then it came down to me sending her a bunch of different brands I had to try, along with pics of DD wearing each brand to show how tight to wear each one. Come to figure out it was that she was putting them on huge and too large. She still doesn't CD full time, but I think that's in part that the BGs don't fit her kid very well and she gets frustrated by the odd leaks. Also why I don't recommend putting all your egss in one basket with 1 brand JUST in case.
Thank you again everyone! I purchased fitted GMD with Thirsties covers in size 1. I know that the OS saves money but I also wanted to do this from the start and my baby is measuring in a little small. I also didn't like the bulkiness of a OS pocket diaper on a newborn. I do have a few rumparooz though that I will use. I researched for about the first 6 months of my pregnancy, comparing reviews and recommendations and buying different styles just to see how they work. I needed something simple for me, but easy to wash without a crazy wash routine. I also wanted some natural fibers so I got organic cotton for the GMD. At first I was overwhelmed at all the brands, styles and information but I think I finally figured out what will work...or at least what I think will work without having my baby here to try. I'm due in about 4 weeks.
Everyone said I would give up when I first told them I would cloth (they all asked why I didn't have sposies on my registry).
This made me even more determined.
My advice: Make cloth a way of life. Don't let rashes, washing, traveling, daycare deter you. If cloth becomes your new normal, you won't know anything else and you'll troubleshoot the problems instead of throwing in the towel
I had a friend who said she did cloth "for about two days" tell me I wasn't going to make it past the first week in cloth. Not sure what she was using. Come to find out, our friends actually had a pool going on when we would give up on cloth! (The longest being 2 months)
4 months in, DH, who was on the fence, loves it and tells all our friends how great it is, and I'm completely obsessed with how cute fluffy bums are! (Even doing the research in how to make my own covers once I get a sewing machine)
Love all the encouraging replies. I purchased 20 GMD newborn fitteds with 4 thirsties size 1 covers and 1 flip for now. I know I'll need different sizes when he grows but this is just to get me started. I also have 1 rumparoos and 2 other OS pocket diapers that my mom ordered but they are a surprrise and not here yet. I also got a diaper sprayer, snappis and a wet bag for travel. Any suggestions?

So do you guys get the $$?
Yeah... you should totally get the money from this. To buy all. the. diapers.
My SIL bought many CDs before she was even pregnant, then got a new washer and gave them all away because she didn't want to get poo in the new washer.

No monies . Just friendly bets on how long we would last.
(Maybe "pool" is the wrong word, but they all had different times they thought we would give up)

Once you surpass each bet, that person should buy you a diaper.
