Cloth Diapering

Anyone ever given up?

I just purchased cloth diapers for my newborn expected in 1 month. I purchased covers and fitteds and a few accessories. All my family and friends say I'm crazy for not using sposies and I'm nervous that I will give up cloth diapering. Any success stories to ease my fears. I put off buying for a long time in case I changed my mind but took the plunge today.

  • People keep telling me the same thing. One lady said her daughter was going to cd but they were all too big for her at first. Now the baby is 5 months old and still in sposies. I told her that I was way too excited about cd to go out and buy sposies for longer than ABSOLUTELY necessary. It's really frustrating how everyone doubts you when you mention cd. I'm so excited about it and I'm becoming quite passionate, it's slightly offensive when people turn their noses up to it!

  • I totally didn't know if I could do it before LO was born, and everyone I know (pretty much) has said that they don't think I can make it at all. I'm only two weeks in and I love it. I have no thoughts of giving up - only buying more. It really is so crazy easy. You can do it!
  • I gave up.  Now I just hang around this board for the gifs.
stop being so antagonizing.  people like you are the reason others give up on cloth.
zip it.   you don't even know me.

    Or does she? Does anyone?

  • We love cloth diapering. Once we started a lot of other people jumped on board. Super easy. I even bought a sponge bob one for mil cause she loves sponge bob.

  • I love CD-ing and I'm only 2 months in. I heard prefolds are the easiest and I agree. We even have really hard water and have had no issues. At this time I haven't mastered a night time routine so we do use sposies at night. I don't see it as a "fail." When you really truly want to do something, you make it work. You can do it!

  • I gave up cloth diapering overnight, for naps and on the go.  It's so easy to cloth diaper at home, so much that I only use two sposies a day at most, but I love our cloth still and I feel like I'm still being green by cloth diapering at home.
  • ps. My friend gave up completely but she bought a bunch of junk cheapy diapers.  I think if she would have gone a different route or bought another brand she might have kept going.

pps. LOL... sorry, I kept realizing I'm not done!

We have been cloth diapering for  1 1/2 years!

It's refreshing to hear from people who use a combination of sposies and cloth!  From my point of view, every little bit helps.
  • I got "the eye" from everyone. You know the look. One brow raised, trying to hide the surprise and shock. Luckily all my family managed to keep from saying "you'll never stay with it". I was really honest with myself about what system would work though. I knew that I wouldn't want to do prefolds. I knew that I wanted something just as easy to change as a sposie. So I have mostly pockets and do fitteds overnight. To me it's really not that much extra work either.

No reason to give up. Sposies were a flipping nightmare for us. My little man is not only and explosive pooper but a super soaker and we tried every brand of sposie they all blew out for him. I love cloth its not like I do anymore laundry then I did when I had to wash his clothes, bouncer, sheets, etc every flipping day due to blow outs. You can do this once you get your wash routine down its easy peasy

  • Don't let people get you down. Diapers aren't the only parenting decision people will disagree with. Just know that your family is going to love the heck out of your kid, regardless of what is on their butt. They will get used to it, or it won't be the main focus for them once there is a cute baby to hug. I think people need to be more aware and say " you can" instead of " you can't". Especially when they love you and are a big part of your life. There are lots of resources online ( here included) that are great support if you run into trouble. You will be fine :) and even if you decide against cloth, you will probably do so after 2 months of use. And you can make a little money back. Still a win.
  • I love my cloth.....but I was thinking about cloth, sposies, and our budget the other day and I came to the conclusion that it's a good thing I love my cloth since I can't afford to give up on cloth. Cd is one of the few things I can do to make me staying home/ working pt possible. Besides, it really is relaxing to spend those few minutes hanging them on the clothes line and folding/assembling them.....ok so maybe I'm just weird for finding hanging laundry relaxing.

The description of your LO pooping everywhere coupled with his grinning face in your sig is just too much!  He looks like he's proud of his messes!
  • I got a few raised eyebrows when I mentioned using cloth, and my brother said he thought I'd quit after two weeks. Here we are, 20 months later, still rocking our flats and covers.
  • I worried and thought I'd get a few raised eyebrows, but mostly because I was nervous myself if I would last. Almost 6 months in now, and I only want to buy more! And try to convince others into giving it a go :)

  • DH was initially hesitant, so I didn't persue it again until LO was around 3 months. He was hooked after the first diaper change :) I think people forget that with a LO you are dealing with poop no matter if you use cloth or disposable. We had the same issue of LO exploding out of his disposables along with constant diaper rash unless we plastered his bum with butt paste. So far we haven't had any issues since switching to cloth.

Great Support, Great Conversations, and more than just Cloth Diapering at our new home

  • I absolutely love CDing! DH is loving it too. :) I actually get a lot of comments and questions whenever I change LO in a public restroom or at church in the nursery or on the floor at a family or friend gathering. It's pretty cool and most people are really intrigued and impressed by it. Don't let your family stop you. As PPs have said, there will be at least one person contending every parenting decision you make. Just do what you feel is right for your family. :) I actually still have 2 unused (gifted) cases of sposies because once we started cloth we never turned back!

  • Ppl will tell you that your going to fail...I've gotten that and we are expecting this LO in 3 weeks. DH and I make our decisions based on research and what we think is safe and healthy for babe. I'm sure there will be days when I'm dealing with stink or another issue where I get frustrated but honestly I love the support I've gotten here and I know I'll be able to get more - plus there are tons of blogs, videos and sites out there that trouble shoot too. Also DH and I are stubborn and once we decide to stick to something we do!

  • Some of Our friends are actually taking bets on how long we will stick with it. The other friends bought us CDs for our baby shower (awesome!). I learned how to cd my baby brother with prefolds, pins and plastic pants when I was 9. Pretty sure I can do it now with better stuff!

  • I actually did give up at first. I had a 5 and a half pound baby that wouldn't nurse. She was too tiny for her stash, and the nursing problems turned me into an anxious mess. Everyone had the "I told you so" face on.

Then she turned about 3 months, I was a functioning human being again and I tried them out. Since then, she only wears disposables on occasion. I love them. I also had to buy a different style, because I didn't really like the ones I had originally bought. Once I tried a workhorse, it was easy cheesy after that.

  • Maybe my perception is colored because we don't have curbside trash pick up. I'd much rather do a few extra loads of laundry than have all that extra garbage to deal with. I just don't get all the extra work that people think it involves.
