Seriously?

DH and I were out talking to our neighbor last night, an older gentleman. He is always really nice and asks me how much longer until baby comes. We bought a minivan this week because both of our cars were tiny, so he was commenting on that and says "Well, I hate to say it, but just be careful when you drive it! I know you will, but they are just not as safe as a mid-size car. They are so long, so they sort of just crumple up and fold in during an accident." Umm, thanks? Now I have visions of our van crumpling in around my girls.

Then he said "You have a dog right, is it a big one?" No, we have a small dog. "Well, just be careful. I heard on the news where a family's dog killed their baby. They never had any warning from the dog. You just can't be too careful." Yes, thank you.. Trust me, our dog is baby-gated away from the kids unless we are in there.

I know he meant well, but why on earth would you say those things to someone who is about to give birth? He also shared them with our neighbors on the other side of him who have a 4 week old baby girl.

Anyone else getting any horror stories from people?

My MIL, bless her heart, LOVES to say "you can't be too careful." Dogs, cars, strangers. Um, yes you can. You can be a hermit who never leaves her house with her kids and denies them fun experiences because you are afraid. She told me once that my son was so cute, he'd be a real target for someone to steal. That I should "always watch" him in public. Thanks, hadn't thought of that. I'm so tempted, the next time she says "you can't be too careful!" to ask "did you get that from FOX news?" I know that's where the BS fear mongering comes from.

Yeah, I just ignored him, but it just made me shake my head a bit. People just don't think. When my SIL was in labor, her step-MIL was telling her about these horrible genetic diseases that are more common in boys that she needed to test her son for. WTF?

I just try to mentally tune out the horror stories. My coworker, for example, is one of those people who indulges in her terribly sad, TMI, and horrific personal stories (about anything and everything). She unfortunately had a stillborn baby before having her two kids (who are adults now), and basically takes every chance she can to bring it up in front of me. I just tell myself that I can't pay attention though, because literally, she's the type of person where someone she just met says "How are you doing?" and then she launches into a story about her sciatica and how she has to have cataract surgery and her husband is out of work. It's kind of ridiculous.

The IIHS just came out with a study showingthat at certain types if accidents that midsize SUVs can actually be quite dangerous. Omg, now we can't drive minivans or midsize SUVs!!!1!1!!

Regardless, we all assume somerisk, regardless if we drive, decide to get pregnant, go to an amusement park, or whatever. It is no use worrying.

On that note, my favorite comment was from my MIL who said I had to be careful breastfeeding because my boobs could smother LO.

DH is a hunter, and my parents are always harassing us about gun safety even though the guns are locked in a safe far away from the ammo, and we have no plans of letting our kids even touch one until they're much older and can understand the seriousness and dangers of firearms. My dad especially loves to tell us horror stories about kids shooting themselves and their siblings in the face with handguns. We don't even own any handguns. :-/

Oh, and when DH was really into Call of Duty, my dad would forward him articles about kids and video game violence. 8-|

Sounds just like my MIL, Debbie downer. Totally convinced that everything out there is dangerous, and kills millions of kids a day. Dogs, cars (the kinds she doesn't drive, of course) certain types of food. Aspirin, pretty much any medicine the Dr. prescribes, apparently clothing restricts the baby in utero, toys are all dangerous... you name it. She is just a lovable ball of intense stress to carry on a conversation with. *rolls eyes*  :-@

Does this mean we should walk around naked? I'd be totes okay with that, though not sure how many other people would be.
