People in general watch too much TV. Take a walk, read a book, have a conversation, see a (live) show. Do something other than immerse yourself in "reality" TV and plaster your commentary all over FB.

  • If you have heart disease and diabetes and gout and a host of other seriously shitty health conditions, you should pay attention to what you eat. You can't fuel your body on high-fat, high-cholesterol food, hardly eat any veggies and expect to have a good quality of life. It's foolish and selfish to those who care about you.

  • Ooh, that made me think of one! I'm sure I would enjoy some of the fad books like Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Divergent. But I roll my eyes when they're recommended, because seriously - they're books written for teens. They just strike me as brain trash, like chick lit or reality TV.

I could be wrong though, so convince me!

  • Along the lines of @eshee8198's post...my UO is that brain trash is totally acceptable, in moderation. Not everything you read or watch HAS to be for educational enrichment. I agree that some people get way too caught up in "reality" TV and I still can't believe grown adults think that shit is real. According to my FB feed, that's a UO too.

  • Why is everyone hating on brain trash today? My mind doesn't need to be stimulated 24-7.

@eshee8198‌ I haven't read HP, but yeah divergent, twilight, etc isn't going to win any literary awards, but it's decently written with an entertaining story.

ironically, it took me so long to write that one, I didn't see the there until it was posted!

  • When I had to watch Citizen Kane for my grad school film class, I was so bored I wanted to gauge my eyes out with a spoon. Guess that makes me SUPER unintelligent.

People who think reading books is boring are, on average, less intelligent than people who can enjoy reading a book.

Same goes for people who think all old movies are boring.
meh, I feel like there are different types of intelligence, and a lot of them are underrated. I know plenty of people who are too spastic to sit through a book, but can wire up a house in no time flat.

  • If I read trash and I slightly more intelligent than those who read nothing?
    Please tell me yes.

I read a lot of financial stuff during the day, analyze numbers and stimulate my brain plenty. I don't read books that have a lot of value.  I want something that I can get lost in, not something that is going to make me think.

I agree with this.  But I am also one of those people (except the FB thing, and generally we don't watch that much reality TV, just other mindless stuff. :) )

In the winter, we watch waay too much TV.  We get out a lot more in the summer due to the weather, but also because DH loves to watch baseball in the summer, I get all my reading in during that time.

  • I'm sure this is not unpopular, but I think spending $1000 for prom is ridiculous.  That's the number that was on a radio show this morning as the average cost of people going to prom now a days in this area.

Either I'm old, or dresses have realllllly inflated in 12 years.
Agreed. It's outrageous. I work in a high school and, in general, we're in a HCOL area. Girls are spending $500-600 on custom beaded gowns. And you can't just go to Macy's or something and pick one off the rack....they go to private boutiques that make gowns for pageant competitors. They spend $200+ on hair extensions. It's NUTS.

We have a very diverse student population, so we also have girls that can't even afford the $160 ticket to prom. It's sad.

  • I need an hour or so each day to just zone out. Not thing, emerse myself in "shit" TV and get on with my life. It's my "me" time. I don't regret it for a second. I love to read but don't have as much time as I used to. I read for entertainment not education. That's what college was for.

My husband is extremely smart and isn't a bit reader. Its not that he douesn't enjoy it but there are other things he enjoys more.

As for prom I'm pretty sure $500 was what my parents spent Senior year. My dress was $400 plus shoes, hair and my jewelry. I could have been higher but my aunt is my hairdresser. Thank god for neice discounts!

  • I did the biggest prom faux pas, I wore the same dress two years in a row.  My little sister then wore the same dress to her prom.  I spent $80 on it

I never went. Thought it was lame. I was so cool.

That's insane.  I remember buying a $200 dress for prom and feeling like it was really really expensive.  Looking back, I actually do think that $200 for a dress is pretty expensive.  Hair was probably $50.  So I only spent about $250.  But I guess when you add limo, etc...I can see how it can get up there.  But $1000 still seems high.

Where in the hell are you guys having prom that tickets are $160?!  Ours were $40 and we had ours at a really nice downtown venue.  I know this was all 12 years ago, but still.  I'd be interested to know what people pay in my area for prom tickets...

  • I don't think I've ever read a book (for pleasure) that taught me anything. When I read, I want to zone out and feel like I'm in a world other than my own. YA books are where its at.

Early FFFC: I've only been in a limo once.  I don't understand the appeal.  I cannot for the life of my understand the need/desire to have them for prom.

  • I do agree with hyaline to an extent though. If we're talking about the people who are all "ugh, reading is lame." then I do judge. Because really? You can't find ANYTHING interesting?
Some people just aren't readers.  Yes, I judge anyone who thinks reading is dumb, but some very smart people may not be a reader.

I think DH is very smart, but he doesn't like to read much.  Every once and awhile he'll get a book about sports and dig into it, but I don't think he reads very quickly, so he can easily get bored with a book.

On a side note, as we're talking about this, I just realized I don't think I've read a book more intelligent than Curious George in about 2 months.  I really need to download something.

  • I'm pretty sure my mom never spent over $150 on any of my proms...i went 3 years and my senior year was the most "expensive" but even then my dress was maybe $100...DD will have a rude awakening if she expects me to shell out upwards of $1000 for her prom.

  • I have a very short attention span so reading does not come easy. I was always behind in reading as well. So struggle plus short attention span means difficulty. I can read short stories and teen type "trash" easily. But for me to pick up an informational type book to read is hard. I end up reading and rereading and still not understanding what I read. Maybe I am less intelligent haha.

I've been in a limo 2x in my life. Once for someone's 30th birthday and the other was our wedding. We actually had 2. We wanted our attendants and their spouse/signifcant others to be able to ride together and enjoy the party so we needed 2. Everyone loved it and it worked out so well. Having one for prom though seems very overdone. It's prom, not your wedding.

I usually read more serious novels, but I thoroughly enjoyed Hunger Games.

That's total BS to drop that much on prom. I guarantee it goes beyond dress, shoes, hair, etc. to limo, after-prom entertainment.
