Which Name?

Re: Which Name?

  • See we're not so different! Love Graham and especially Asher!

For girls I like Charlotte and Scarlett best but unfortunately Charlotte is becoming popular. Ireland/Scotland I can get behind in the MN spot if baby was conceived there (warming a Kardashian gave Scotland as a MN to her baby)

    Other suggestions

    Girl:
    Felicity
    Leona
    Genevieve
    Vivienne
    Georgia
    Violet

    Boy
    Theodore
    Sullivan
    Reed/Reid
    Brooks
    Bennett
    Kellan
    Eoghan

  • I really love Asher!  It has family significance for me, so if it worked with our LN it'd be one of my top boy choices.  Graham and Solomon are also great names.  I like Charlotte and Scarlett just fine, and honestly while it's not everyone's taste here I like Aspen as a girl name.  Also Arden, along those lines.

Okay....Well, I like different names or spelling.

    Here are some we liked:

For our boy we like, Graham Saul (nickname Gray)

    Alternative Boy:
    Kannon
    Kable
    Asher
    Solomon

(I am not keen on doing K for boy, because of my daughter being a K)

    Girl names:
    Kadence
    Aspen
    Charlotte
    Ireland or Scotland
    Auryn
    Auden
    Phoenix
    Scarlett

    I like different names.

I am open to any suggestions.

Even totally different names. I am stuck.

Graham is a great name! I really like Charlotte and Scarlett too. If you like Auden what about Arden or Autumn?

You've got a lot of great options on this list! Your boy name is nice, I also like Asher and Solomon.  For girls, I LOVE Scarlett and Charlotte is great as well, as long as you don't spell it Kharlotte ;)

    Lol. Thank you!

Wow, I leave to teach Ovid's Heroides for one day and come back to a four page BNB battle!

To summarize my feelings upon skimming the thread:
    1. I very much dislike both Cadence and Aspen. Changing the C to a K makes Cadence not only an unattractive name, but also a misspelled one. Some names of Greek derivation have been Latinized to use Cs at the beginning, in which case I would not side-eye a reversion to the original use of a kappa, but this is not one of those names, I am pretty certain, since it derives from the Latin verb cadere.

    2. As my dear wifey @MauiBliss already mentioned, children that are already born are off limits. OP, that rule shouldn't have been broken and I'm sorry you were put in the position of feeling like you had to defend your DD's name.

    3. Words have correct and incorrect spellings and names are words. To believe that any part of that is not true is ignorance and should be avoided.

    4. Thank you, OP, for abandoning the purple font.

    5. As a man once said, "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need." This is very much the core philosophy about feedback on this board.

    6. My advice on names: back to the drawing board.

    Point Taken.

    Soap, please?
George Carlin would have told you where to stick it with that soap of yours.
I love the names Sterling and Xander, that I see under the insult. I really do. Where did you get them from?

Love them. Thank you so much. Awesome list. Love Hero... What do you think of Honor?  Just throwing it in there!
  • I feel compelled to point out a couple of things:
    1. This board is far from a random sampling of the population, when it comes to baby names. If someone asked about what type of car they should get, sure this would be a random sampling. But the group of regulars on this board are here because they love names. They have that in common. And that makes them different than a random sampling of the population. So... generally speaking, these ladies will have much stronger opinions about names than would the general public. They have much more information about names. They know a lot more about the history of names. They also, I think, tend to have similar tastes considering a lot of naming trends. But please remember that it's a great big world out there and most people are not name nerds. Most people do not know if a name is "really" a name, if it's spelled "correctly," or where the name originated. And most people don't care.
    2. It is incredibly wrong to criticize the name of a child who has already been born. I truly appreciate the ladies that point that out and those who apologize for having done so.

    Now... OP:
I like Aspen Grace. I think it sounds great with your other daughter's name and I just like Aspen as a name anyway. Kadence is nms, though I also do prefer it spelled with a C. However, I don't believe any harm will befall your daughter if you spell her name with a K. (Though I would strongly advise against the K if your last name happens to start with a K.)

  • I REALLY like Graham. Asher and Solomon are nice.

I like Scarlett. Arden is a good suggestion similar to some of your other ideas too. Or maybe Audra? Charlotte is nice, just very popular.

Kannon, Kable, Auryn, and Auden do not sound like real names. Phoenix sounds like a boy's name to me. GL making your decision!

Phillipa is a total bad a** name, excuse my language.  I love it.  Plus the nickname Pippa makes it even better. If you want something unheard of I would steer clear of Asher, Graham, Kannon, Charlotte, Scarlett and Phoenix from your list.  I personally know people who have used these name recently (Cannon, actually, but it's essentially the same).  In order to find actually uncommon names check these websites.

https://www.namenerds.com/uucn/  - This gives you a list of names based on actual popularity, considering kre8tiv spellings.  People think they name their son Kaedyn and it's so cool and uncommon but actually there are a million Cayden, Caden, Caeden, and Kaidens in the world and it's actually quite popular.

https://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager - This graphs name that are trending.  Look at the graph of Harper compared to the graph of Louisa.  People think they are being uncommon with their names, but then they ALL use the same one and you end up with a common name

Annnnd if you find one you like, then check it at www.behindthename.com to make sure it's a real name.

Hope that helps.  When I started reading this board in 2008 I can honestly say I had TERRIBLE name choices.  I can't tell you how thankful I am that these ladies talked me out of some truly stupid names.

    ETA: words are hard.
