3rd Trimester

Failed 1hr glucose! Help!

I'm 32 weeks today and my doctor just informed me that I had failed my 1hr glucose a month ago! Apparently the results "slipped through the cracks" and they didn't notice till my appt today. I can't take the 3 hr until Saturday and am totally freaking out. Won't get results till next week.

This is my second pregnancy I passed the one hour during my first pregnancy. I'm not overweight at all, never have been. 5'4, 144lbs right now (started at 121), diabetes is not in my family at all, but my one hour glucose was 171!

I had only eaten oatmeal at 7am that morning, my test was at 1:00pm. I exercise, eat tons of fruits and vegetables, no red meat, very little fat in my diet. Has this happen to anyone? So worried, especially because I wasn't told until now at 32 weeks!

Re: Failed 1hr glucose! Help!

  • Sorry it slipped through the cracks that you failed. If it makes you feel better I failed my one hour then passed my 3 hour fine. Good luck!

  • I was the same way after I failed mine. But I did pass the 3 hour. Everyone told me not to worry and I would be fine on the 3 hour, but they said that on the first test and I failed! LOL

I'm 4'11" and only about 135lb right now, also was never overweight or had diabetes history, so I was amazed and thought I had done something wrong, but I was eating fine.

Maybe the oatmeal had some sugars in it that spiked the first test? I had plain eggs before mine and water for breakfast. But depending on what oatmeal you ate, that could have had a few sugars in it.

  • Weight, diet, and exercise have nothing to do with GD. It is caused by your placenta.

There is nothing you can do just take the 3 hour test. I think the latest study is almost 50% fail teh 1 hour. But many pass the 3 rd.
All of this. I'm sorry it fell through the cracks but try not to worry too much about what's happened since the test. I highly doubt the breakfast you ate the day of the test messed with the results given the timeline.

If you do end up with GD, good fats, protein, and fiber will be your best friends.

I failed the 1-hour with a 178, and then all four draws of my 3-hour test were substantially below the upper bounds they set for passing.

Try not to freak out, many women fail the 1-hour then pass the 3-hour but even if you do have GD it isn't the end of the world!

  • I was told by my Dr. to fast everything but water after midnight… no exceptions. There is sugar in everything, and many things turn to sugar once they hit your bloodstream. She even asked me one last time before the test if I had eaten or had anything but water to drink because we'd reschedule. Because, that drink is already FULL of sugar, you're drinking it in a short time period to see how your body handles sugar intake (even at extreme levels) during pregnancy. ANY sugar you've had at all before hand, could tip the test.
  • I also failed the one hour but passed the 3 hours with results not even coming close to the limit.  Good luck!
  • You don't have to be over weight to have GD. Has nothing to do with it.
  • During my first pregnancy, I failed the one-hour and passed the three-hour. The one-hour is supposed to be non-fasting, but I had oatmeal and am convinced it caused me to fail. I'm going to fast this time and take a snack for after the blood draw.

  • I failed my first one. They draw blood 4 times and you have to pass 3 of the draws to not have GD. I passed 3 today and my DR told me to just not consume as many sweets. I have never been over weight but do have a low functioning thyroid so I normal try to eat healthy to keep weight off. I am always VERY active esp with heavy weights in the gym. That came to a very sudden stop when I got pregnant. I also added in a lot more fattening foods. My weight gain is pretty right on track for "normal"... but I think failing that test had a lot to do with sudden change. ** definitely a mistake I wont make next pregnancy.**
  • I've failed the 1 hr but passed 3 in all of my pregnancies. Don't worry.
  • Also, you don't have to fast for the one hour test, so don't worry about having messed it up. You either have GD or you don't and either way it'll be managed from now on.

    Good luck!

  • I failed mine too.  I eat super healthy and do step aerobics.  Diet and exercise, unfortunately, do not really affect GD.  Sometimes our pancreas's just don't produce enough insulin when pregnant.

  • I failed my 1 and 3 hr and found out last week I have gestational diabetes.  I'm a healthy weight, never been overweight, exericse, eat right.  I have three friends who've been health weights, exercised and got GD as well.  It's just the pregnancy hormones and placenta doing their own thing with insulin and more than likely it will go away once the baby comes out.

I'm sorry they caught it so late, but hopefully you pass your 3 hour! :)

That sucks your 1-hour screening results were overlooked somehow, I can see why you're upset. It definitely would have been nicer to have that knowledge sooner, so you could get the diagnostic test and -- if necessary -- make a plan to take charge of it.

That being said, plenty of women with GDM have absolutely no risk factors. It's a crap shoot. Don't blame yourself. PP posters are right that it's due to the placenta, NOT your weight, health, or eating habits. Needing more testing -- or even receiving a diagnosis -- is NOT some kind of commentary on your personal choices or judgment of success or failure to live a healthy life.

And you know what, shame on anyone who uses a glucose test result to judge anyone else.

LOVE this!! I felt so shameful and my self-worth went down a lot when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes because I thought I was healthy!! I hadn't gained too much weight, exercised still, etc. But now I realize that it really is luck of the draw.

  • Just wanted to echo everyone here. I failed both tests and have gestational diabetes. I have never been overweight, eat mostly healthy, and exercise. It's not you- it's your placenta! Don't feel bad.
  • GD has nothing to do with being overweight. I had it with bith pregnancies.

Tons of fruit has tons of sugar-- natural or not. Yes you are getting the nutrition from a banana compared to a cookie but your body will.process the sugars the same way. Fat does not cause diabetes- you need fats in your diet... the good kind. Fat does not increase your blood sugar. In fact it keeps you more satisfied.

I hope everything works out for you.
  • I second what others have said. I failed, but passed the three-hour. I also am vegan, very health conscious, and a runner!

Despite the results, my midwife had me start a low glycemic diet that has really helped! I don't have GD but feel the sugar high/lows that make me feel awful. It's basically minimal processed foods, more whole grains, and balancing all meals with some protein. Good luck! Bring a good book or some knitting!

  • GD is one of those things that you really don't have control over.  Sure, being overweight, having a family hisory of diabetes, etc. can predispose you to GD.  However, plenty of women get it who have no risk factors.  I had it when I was pregnant with DS even though I was a competitive triathlete, ate healthy, had an athletic body with a lot of muscle, etc.

This time around, I passed my 1hour with flying colors (I was a 120 and the cut-off was 135).  It's all about how your body's hormones interact with the extra hormones created by the placenta.  Sometimes the placental hormones interfere with your body's ability to know to and create enough insulin in response to your blood sugar.

Really, if you are diagnosed with GD, it's not that bad.  Most women manage to control their blood sugar with diet, daily testing and exercise.  The diet is basically just balancing carbs you eat (and you have to eat less of them) with protein.  If you do end up needing insulin, it's also not the end of the world.  In the grand scheme of things, it's a pretty small price to pay (and short time period) for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

  • Try not to freak out. If you were eating a fairly balanced diet that wasn't too carb or sweets heavy  then you probably were pretty much following the GD diet these last 4 weeks anyways. The test shows you can't process a huge amount of carbs/sugars, not that your diet is poor. We have a GD check in over on the June board if you have any questions. And as everyone else said anyone can get GD. I am pretty similar, I didn't have it my first pregnancy, no risk factors, my BMI is borderline underweight if anything, this kid is just found a new way to mess up my body... j/k.
