I always think of it as a girls name (like Darcy), but these things tend to be regional, I am from the west coast (Oregon).

I think girl because it was the main character in John Grisham's "The Pelican Brief" (Julia Roberts in the movie). That's the only place I've ever heard it.

I grew up with someone whose older sister was Darby. She'd be late 30s now.

But my first instinct is that it's a boy name. Sounds like a British boys name to me, not sure why.

Seems pretty unisex. Though I've only ever heard of Darby Crash of the 70s punk band The Germs and I think that was a made up name. Also a place name...it was the name of a really crappy town I lived near when I lived in Philly.

My first thought is Darby Shaw, the main character in the Pelican Brief, so I think girl. But in the back of my mind, I know it can be a boys name. I feel like maybe there was a male character in a Jane Austen-type novel? Although I don't know which book or if I'm even totally making that up.

But if I heard it today, I would assume girl.

ETA: I live and grew up in Chicago, but have lived in Colorado, NYC and North Carolina.
