What causes black baby poop?

This is probably a silly question but what causes black baby poop?

On Saturday evening and 3 times on Sunday A had black poop. I was concerned until I figured it must have been caused by the fondant I ate Saturday afternoon. Some if it had dark food colouring. Edit She is breastfed and eats almost nothing but breastmilk. She tried a yogurt pouch for the first time on Saturday and then on Sunday.(no food colouring in those) She has had greek yogurt before with no reaction.

Well, it is now Monday evening and she has gone twice today and it is still black. I am already planning a visit to the doctor tomorrow for non-related reasons but I am concerned. If it were from a bit of food colouring in fondant should it last this long?

Re: What causes black baby poop?

  • Usually black poop is caused by iron or blood... If she hasn't been eating a lot of iron-rich food, and you don't think it's the fondant, I'd definitely bring it up to the doctor.

  • Is it black or just really dark brown?  Sometimes G has almost black poo from spinach or prunes.  It's normal for it to change color based on different foods.  Black tarry poo or coffee ground or mucousy could be blood and would be an issue.
  • Thanks for the replies. There was a bit of mucus. It was really black today, one yesterday could have been really dark. She hasn't tried a different type of food recently but she had not had that particular type of yogurt.

I guess it is just one more thing to bring up tomorrow.
  • my pedi said that we needed to watch out for really dark poops because that could be dried blood. He was concerned about it because she might have a mild allergy to dairy. Not trying to scare you or anything, but she may be allergic to either something you ate, or something she ate which could be affecting her tummy. Is she acting weird at all or is it just the poop? I'd definitely bring it up with the pedi sooner rather than later.

  • Thanks for replying. She was extremely grumpy for the few days before the black poop started but now she is just a bit clingy.
  • Could definitely be a dairy sensitivity, especially since she just tried yogurt for the first time.

  • My LO always gets black poo after eating banana. I was told that Is common.

  • I read that it could be blood in the stool...could happen because of lactose intolerance.

  • Could the dye in food YOU ate really make it through to the breastmilk?

I would call the doctor, better safe than sorry.

  • Thanks to everyone who replied. I am honestly not sure if food colouring I ate could cause synptoms in her.

The doctor told me that if she poops black poop again I should put the diaper in a bag, put that in the fridge and bring it in to them. He gave me no answers or ideas. He was rushed so I couldn't say much.
