Trouble TTC

Acupuncture tomorrow!

Hey ladies!!  So I finally decided to take the plunge and try acupuncture with my treatments.  I just finished Clomid yesterday, and have a follie check with my RE on Friday.  My first acupuncture appointment is tomorrow!

I am curious what thoughts/advice everyone has for acupuncture appointments!?  I am wondering if my timing is ok to still possibly help this cycle (CD12 - 1st appointment), as well as curious about how often I should plan to have appointments moving forward.

These treatments are not covered under my insurance, and they are not cheap, so any advice on how to make the best of my appointments would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Acupuncture tomorrow!

  • I've been seeing an acupuncturist since December. I really like going.  I see her for fertility issues, but also for chronic headaches/migraines.  I've found that since I've been having acupuncture, my chronic headaches have pretty much disappeared- I was having them daily and now I rarely have one.

I'd let the acupuncturist know what CD you're on, and if you chart your cycles, they might find it helpful to see your chart. II share mine with my acupuncturist, and before each treatment she always clarifies where I am in my cycle and tailors her treatment to whatever phase I am in - follicular, luteal, etc.

Wear comfortable clothes!  I'm not sure how best to maximize treatment if insurance doesn't cover it, but it would be worth discussing with the practitioner... maybe there are phases of your cycle that would be best to have your treatments during.

Good luck!  I hope it goes well and you find it helpful.

  • Thanks so much @haloform!  I saw an acupuncturist for my chronic back pain before, and did feel some relief.  It wouldn't be my first "go" at it, but it would be for fertility.

I will definitely let them know what CD I am on, as well as what my plan is moving forward.  I am guessing I will want to go another time or two before/when I ovulate!?

  • I have been seeing an acupuncturist for about three months now in a community setting. I second everything said in the above post and would also suggest wearing clothes where your legs/knees and abdomen can be easily accessed. One of the first times I went I wore a dress and that didn't go over so well when he wanted to treat my tummy area!

I just started going too.  I went near the end of last cycle, and then will be doing what he recommends this cycle.

He should ask where you are at in your cycles, treatments, etc. Mine bases his treatment upon that.  He told me for a natural cycle I'm supposed to come in on days 7, 14, and 21 (or around there).  He recommends 3 per cycle, minimum of 2.

I like it so far.  Most of the needles go in my legs, feet, stomach (lower stomach early in cycle), back, and he always puts on at the top of my head - which I find interesting.

Good luck, hope you like it!

  • I've been going about once a week. I love it, if even for stress relief only. Now starting IUI, she'd like me to continue once a week if Ican, but to time it as close as possible to right before and right after the IUI.

I go to a "community acupuncture"place. After the initial consult, she lets you choose to pay between 35 - 55 dollars, based on income, but also on honor system. I hope you enjoy it!

  • First appointment down!!!

I think it went well!?  I was there for a little over an hour.  After she got all of my background info, she did a series of needles in my lower back for 20 minutes.  Then I turned over and she did a series of needles in my stomach area with some electrolysis?? style vibrations, as well as a few needles in my feet.

She explained the importance of proper kidney function, and the connection with that and what she was doing.  She requested that I come once a week, but she didn't seem to think it was important for my timing to coincide with my fertility treatments.

    Thoughts!?

Weird. I've never had any in my back, only hands, feet, belly, legs, head, and ears. I'm sure everyone is different though. My Chinese type is Waterlogged/Damp.

    ****BFP/Loss mentioned****

I recently just started seeing an acupuncturist to help and she has only ever placed needles in those same areas. I see her based on where I am in my IVF process. I gave her my meds and procedure calendar and she made up my acupuncture schedule based on that. She also told me that I have a “yin deficiency” which is her explanation for my low energy and multiple losses. So she has me on a “no cold” diet. Basically I cut down on the amount of cold items in take in my body. When I drink water I pour it at room temperature. I also have to drink more water and walk more. I’m still not very sure how much of this I believe, but it doesn’t go against my doctors’ orders and heck I’ll try anything at this point. My acupuncturist specializes in infertility and was recommended by my SIL who got her IUI BFP while seeing this woman.

It’s relaxing and nowadays I don’t get much of that so ifs that all it does then I’m ok with it.
