Excessive Periods and Thyroid issues

I have hypoactive thyroid and have meds to regulate that.  I have been on them for 1.5 years.  Prior to this I had limited periods, even went 8 months without one.  I have regular periods for a few months.  But, now I have had a period every 2 weeks for the past 7 weeks.  Should I make an appt to see my OB/GYN?

DH and I have been avoiding the OB/GYN after many rounds of Clomid and Provera--with horrible side effects.  Feeling rather discouraged, because I thought my body was regulating itself with the Thyroxine.

Thanks,

Ashley

Re: Excessive Periods and Thyroid issues

  • I know a thing or two about thyroid issues (5 year thyroid cancer survivor) and the main lesson has been that the thyroid is nothing to mess around with. Thyroid hormones regulate so many systems in the body that when levels are off, it is a big deal. I would strongly encourage you to see a doctor, but I would start with an endocrinologist first, especially if you are uncomfortable with the OB/GYN. If it is thyroid problems causing your issues, chances are it is causing other issues you may not even be aware of. An Endo can sort all that out with you. If the Endo decides it is not thyroid related, that would be important to know, too. In that case you might have to go the OB/GYN, but worry about that bridge when you come to it. I would definitely start with at the endocrinologist. Good luck!

  • I occasionally would get mid-cycle spotting, but since starting Synthroid, the spotting has sometimes progressed to several days of bleeding around ovulation. I'd definitely talk to your endocrinologist first, then see a reproductive endocrinologist, rather than your OB, as they'll be better equipped to figure out what the issue might be, particularly since you've been doing medicated cycles already. They can try different meds that won't give you the same (or as bad) side effects as Clomid, and can monitor you to make sure that you're responding properly. Ovulation-inducing meds can mess with your thyroid as well, so they'll be able to keep a close eye on that to make sure everything is in order!
