when to ditch the onesie?

As LO is making the transition to a more upright individual I feel like onesies are just adding an extra step to the whole diaper changing/mongoose wrestling debacle.

I know they sell onesies up to 24m or something like that, but I can't really see using them after LO grows out of his current 12m clothes.

When did you/do you plan on switching away from onesies? Are there some advantages to them that I'm missing on older infants?

Daycare prefers pants and shirts because of easier diaper changes. I will put him in onesies as long as he still fits into the ones that we have but won't buy any new ones...unless they are rally cute

I don't have a drop dead date but shirts riding up drives me nuts so we'll use them a while longer.

I find onsies are easier for diaper changes than pants and shirts. Trying to get pants on DD is a nightmare. It's harder to find a lot of 18+ months so I will just buy them probably until she fits in an 18 month which at this rate looks like about her 1st brithday.

Right now I put a white sleeve-less onesie on underneath a shirt if he's wearing one. I don't like when his shirt rides up and his belly is showing.

Probably as long as she fits in them. Sometimes I do a onesie with a shirt over top. Her tummy gets cold while crawling without a onesie. The other day she had access to her diaper and kept pulling on the tabs until I put a onesie on her. No onesie is asking for a mess lol

LO is already in 18 month onesies! I plan on keeping him in them as long as I can find them in his size or until I am not carrying him so much. Same as pp, I hate when shirts ride up and bunch up around his armpits.

Half the time (read: 75% of the time) he's only in a onsie. If he's home the struggle to get pants on him is not worth it to me, I would often rather dress one of our rabbits...

I don't know about girls clothing, but a lot of the boy summer clothes are shirts with shorts. There aren't that many outfits with onesies and shorts. I usually put a onesie on underneath a shirt like a pp said so his belly doesn't show, but that will be too hot once summer hits.

We have a long torso + cloth diaper scenario going on, so she's almost outgrowing her 12-month size onesies while still fitting into 9-month pants.  I don't know if I'll buy more onesies.

Yeah.... The shirt riding up drives me bonkers as well. So he will be wearing onesies for quite sometime still.

He just out grew his 6 month onsies, and i have only a few 9 month ones. I don't plan to but any more. I never really used them.

I love onesies and we wear them for a very long time.  I am generally oblivious as to when it's time for a new size however, so we wear the current size until it is so small that it makes a v-neck half way down their chest.  

I like onesies a lot though because it provides tummy coverage when their shirt rides up.

With DS1 I used onesies until he was 2 and we were potty training. I'll keep LO in them as long as possible! He always has a shirt over top but it's extra coverage and warmth. Plus ds1 liked to take off his diaper...not fun. He now wears belts so he can't get diapers off...potty training didn't take.

He's definitely going to wear one when he sleeps for another year or so. My sister switched to two piece pajamas with no onesie underneath when her LO was around a year. Then she woke up one morning to find her LO took his diaper off and smeared poop on the walls. She now puts a onesie over his diaper at night to keep it in place in addition to the pajamas, and that seems to deter him. So yeah, thinking I will leave the night time onesie for a long time.

For daytime, I will probably use them at least until he starts walking and then maybe switch. I don't know though; I like the coverage they give when his shirt pulls up (we layer.)

I hate regular shirts because they constantly ride up when I hold him. I love the onesies that have a shirt over them but I will seriously be sad when we are out of the onesie phase!

Dude footie pajamas are a whole 'nother kettle of fish.  I love those things.

I'll definitely be putting LO in those as long as I can finagle.

Once he grows out of his 12 month clothes that he is currently in, we will be done.  We only have about 5 as it stands

We stopped using onesies once he hit 9m clothing. Right now he is in 12m-18m and I could not imagine going back to onesies. Especially since he is walking now.

So this may be a little off topic but the whole time I was reading this thread all I could think about was how my sister and I wore onesies when we were maybe 6 or 7. I remember it was the early 90s and I hated when my mom made me wear it because it was so hard to go to the bathroom and unsnap it myself! I think she liked them because they had a clean tucked in look. I may have to ask her about her fashion choice one day haha

@FSUwxgirl I totally remember wearing those too!  But we called them bodysuits.  I thought they were cool at the time!

How does the potty situation work with that? We are doing naked weekend with Bradley this weekend and my brain is acting like I don't know how potty time works...

N is usually only in onesies during the day (at home). It's easier for her to pull up in things that way. She likes it better too
