Getting Healthy Check-In

This check-in is for anyone who wants to try and be healthier. You may want to loose weight, eat better or maybe get fit, what ever your goal is we are here to support you.

So share any successes or struggles you may be having.

Also if you have any tasty recipes you want to share please feel free.

I had a good week. Kept my calories between 1200 and 1500. I even was good at my future SIL's shower. Filled my plate with vegis and salad with a small portion of pasta. Passed up the pastry platter and opted for fruit for dessert. That was a huge accomplishment for me.

I was able to walk twice this week. I will try and walk again this week if the temps are up a little. I have lost 9lbs since I started. I'm proud of myself for sticking to it this long. I will do a happy dance when I hit the 10lb mark. Hopefully next week I will be there.

I know we have had a ton of intros in the past few weeks so if you are new to the board and need to get healthy to ttc please join our group.

I know you all have done wonderful this week so let's hear about it.

  • Welcome @JimBobCooter. I'm sure you will do fine starting up the taekwando again. I think our bodies remember a lot longer than our brain does. Let us know how it's going next week. I know you can shed the pounds before your transfer. We will help :)

@Samuelismomma I hate the pre AF bloat. Don't go by the scale. You are toning so as long as you see an improvement there it doesn't matter what the scale says. You are amazing!!!!!!!

  • I need to join in on this!  I am trying very hard to get healthy. In the last month I am down 10lbs. I am stuck and have only lost 1 lb in the last 2 weeks.  I have a Fitbit, and I try to get in 10,000 steps a day.  I am trying to work out the diet right now.  I try to stick to a Paleo diet, but that doesn't always happen.   I am happy to have some support from this board even though I am new.

  • Welcome @FloatingTea. 10 lbs in a month is good. Just give your body time to adjust. Loosing 1-2 lbs a week is optimal. Make sure you are eating enough calories because if you eat too few your metabolism slows down.

I have been dying to get the new fitbit force. But it has been recalled so they stopped selling them. I not sure if I want to wait for them to start selling them again or just go buy the flex. How do you like it and do you set to your phone.

I'm glad you joined our group and great job this month.

  • Thanks @hooligans4‌ ! I have the Fitbit Force. I haven't had any issues with it. I love the display on it. I do connect it to my phone as well as MyFitnessPal app. It honestly does motivate me to walk. It was a great purchase. I don't think the Flex has a display. As far as calories go, I am around 1300-1400 a day. Does that seem reasonable?
  • I want to do this but I SUCK AT IT!

    I need motivation. :(

Maybe I should put a photos of my fas ass on my computer screen to remind myself what i look like right now…..since knowing what i used to look like (and would like to look like again is NOT helping!)

Any strategies you ladies use to keep on track that you find helpful?

@FloatingTea it really depends on your weight and activity level. But I will tell you I am 186 (started at 196) and I try and eat about 1500 calories and I never go below 1200 because that is my limit. If you are on MyFitPal then you should have entered in all your stats and they let you know if you go too low if you use the food diary. I do and I absolutely love it.

I want the force because it has the screen. I guess I should just wait for them to start putting them out again.

@KirstenAlecia I think we all want to look like we used to. My motivation is my food journal. It makes me aware of what I'm eating. And I read food lables now. I cringe at the fat and calories in some of the foods I used to eat with no worries. Just try and make smart choices. Fill most of your plate with vegis and lean protein if you eat meat. For most food that is bad for you there is a healthier alternative. Try and make a few of those changed.

When you get truly fed up with the way you look it will be easier to make the changes. I know it was with me.

I know you can do it. Make one small chNge this week and see how you do.

  • Hi @KirstenAlecia I'm new to the board but wanted to chime in because I've recently gotten back "into" getting fit and motivation has and always be my biggest challenge. This time around, I'm trying a few things differently hoping at least one of them will stick and work. First, I do a daily diary. Nothing crazy long, just a short sentence or two in each of 4-5 categories. The good (something good that happened today) The Bad (something I need to improve on) The Meal (a brief rundown of what I ate) The Love (Something I love about that day.. can be anything). On workout days I have a fifth section, Workout Notes about how I'm doing to see if I'm progressing. Not committing myself to a full drawn out diary helps me get to the point and move on to the next day (and my next achievement).

The other thing I do is try to speak my choices out loud (I am choosing to eat this celery because it's good for me) or (I am choosing to sleep in and skip the gym). Being accountable to yourself is the hardest because we are our biggest critic, so I find I make better choices when I have to answer to myself about it.

So far, those two things have been keeping me motivated (so far). Best of luck!

  • Thanks @hooligans4! I'm happy to be here!

One of the things I've learned from past (failed) experiences is that when I get motivated, I try to accomplish too much too fast... I get frustrated and disappointed fast and lose motivation. This time I am thinking of the marathon I'm running and take it 1 step at a time. Step 1: Drink more water. Step 2: Drink more water! LOL Then move on to making better meal choices, getting more active and on and on... one step at a time!

  • @Hooligans4 Yes we do all want to look like what we used to don't we? lol. Honestly Im not trying to look like what i did in HS or even in my 20s (i was too thin and had and eating disorder at one point.)
I will take where I was when I was about 33. I looked great. Not thin…..and not heavy. Normal. Happy. Healthy.

I low carb its the only way i can lose weight. I have messed up my metabolism severely because of eating disorders in my teens and 20s. I honestly can say Im MENTALLY healthier as a fa girl. When I lose and get thin or closer to it the problems start. So for me there is a fear there too.

Exercise is a no go at the moment since I'm recovering from a pretty bad muscle pull that was weeks ago but the minute i move to fast and the wrong way i get pain reminding me not to go there yet. Walking and not too fast is about all I can do.

I think i will jump on the Low carb wagon tomorrow since today we are eating corn beef and cabbage and potatoes and beer. lol.

Im ready. I am fed up with the way i look :( Its really gross.

@Mamabear904 those are some really great ideas. I may have to implement them. TY

  • @MamaBear904 I'm all about baby steps. I think if we make drastic changes we tend to revert back. I make little changes here and there and it doesn't seem like too much to handle. It had taken me a little over 2 months to loose my 10lbs and I'm ok with that.

  • Hi all, I'm still pretty new to this board, but I really need to join you b/c I CANNOT STOP EATING CANDY. I'm also completely sedentary and basically go from my office chair to my couch. I am a big fan of Weight Watchers (I'm a lifetime member) but every time I try to lose those pesky 5-10 pounds I've put on recently, I loose about 2-3, then stop tracking, then gain it back. I have a method, but my will power and discipline need serious work right now, that and my complete aversion to exercise! Good luck to the rest of you!

LOL, that's me, too. :)  The amount of candy on the desks in my office is overwhelming! I finally made a New Year's commitment to stay away from it and have been mostly successful, but oh my, was it a rough withdrawal period.

  • Another newb stepping up...

I've struggled with the scale not moving for a very long time. There is no medical reason, and I was hoping that coming off the pill would make it easier to shed the weight (prior to my kids being born, I gained 40lbs exactly each time I went on it).

I try to walk to and from work each day, but this past week the weather was uncooperative. I have the Fitbit Flex and absolutely love it. I am getting back into tracking food with MFP, and am doing strength training 3x a week. I was also doing cardio on my elliptical, but it is in bad shape, and I don't really trust it anymore.

I've been struggling with motivation lately because I have a lot going on at work, but am trying to plow through the stress and stay on track.
  • @gabbagal that's great that you respond well to weight watchers. I have never tried it so I'm not familiar with it but if it works then stick with it.

I tried doing excercise in the beginning but it was too hard to do at night after working all day then cooking and cleaning up dinner. So I stopped but I try and stick to my calorie count and it has been working.

Just step away from the candy bowl. lol

@mindaa that was a great New Years resolution. And hats off to you for sticking with it.

    @northernkhaleesi welcome.

That's great that you can walk to work. Walking is the only excercise that I enjoy.

We will help motivate you. And if you use the fitbit and MyFitPal that should help.

I look foreward to hearing positive results in future check-ins

I'm getting nearly 10000 steps a day, so that's a great thing. I've lost 2lbs since going back on my healthy-eating regimen. Just proves that it's all working!

  • I'm into my 4th consistent week of dieting (I hate that word, but I hate the word journey even more). I wavered a little in week 2 and wavered more in week 3. I'm back on track for week 4 but already deviated a bit last night (2 pints of beer, chips and salsa). But I have to stop looking back and keep moving forward. Back at the gym again this morning (which seems to be getting easier for me). The ironic part is though it is getting easier for me, I almost don't want to admit it because of my mental association with working out. I just want to feel like working out is punnishment and it's the devil and I am trying so hard to change my mindset. It's not easy, that's for sure!

Glad the gym is getting easier for you! Must be feeling those good endorphins. :)

Have you tried various types of workouts and working out at different times of day to see what best motivates you and when your energy level is working in your favor?

I'm a super athletic adult, which is a huge change from an awkward teen who would do anything possible to avoid PE class. I just wasn't (and still aren't) into the traditional school sports like softball and volleyball that are centered around "flying objects" hurtling at high speeds towards your face.
I just needed to discover activities that were a better fit. Now I see it as God blessed me with a whole, healthy,  body - and gave me the opportunity to keep training and improving and experiencing the amazing feats of strength and speed it is capable of.

I love that you are working to "speak my choices". That's a technique I've been trying to use more too this year. Instead of using language like"that's bad" or "I can't" saying more positive things like "Since I'm full, I'll just enjoy a cup of tea (instead of dessert)," or "no thank you candy, I'd prefer to eat an apple right now."

  • Be careful when syncing with MFP - there are a couple of glitches, and MFP will deduct calories from your day if it feels you aren't being active enough.

It's hard to see numbers in the red (if you're OCD like me), and that tends to happen more with the sync. It's taken some getting used to for me, and since I eat to TDEE instead of using MFP's formula, I've had to let go of the idea of always being under. Sometimes it doesn't work. I'm trying to focus on balancing my macros - I need to up my protein intake.

Ok so I had a defective unit. I went back to target (twice because the first time they give me the defective one instead of the new one). Once I got the new one home again and plugged it in the blue lights came right on.

Let's see how this works for me know. I did sync them together so we will see if I can get my calories right now.

@northernkhaleesi I always have a problem with my protein intake because I'm a vegetarian. But I try

I almost caved on Sunday at work the girls opened a chocolate bar with pretzel in it, I LOVE chocolate covered pretzels!I resisted most of the day, then I had a piece in my hand and then I put it down. I was very proud of myself. However the Irish soda bread my mom makes is just devine and I have eaten too much since saturday but its all gone now.

It's gong to start getting warmer, I am going to try to get out and walk more, and then get back on my bike. I love biking.

I also really need to start getting up at 6 just so I have more time in my day!

and seriously how do I not lose a single lb cutting out all the sweets I was eating????

    Anyone else do Insanity???

I did this until I got really ill and i got to a point where i was absolutely addicted!

I plan on jumping in again at some point. I have to wait till my pulled muscle is healed completely. A also think i need to go to the Dr, and have my vitamin D level checked. I have a history of being extremely deficient to the point it causes me severe problems.

Its the reason I put on weight in the first place (55lbs over the coarse of 2.5 years and the drs had no idea what was wrong….or they cared not to find out just cared to write scripts till i was fed up) When I'm really deficient I suffer from sever muscle spasms and pulls to the point moving is hard. And it seems like the old problems are creeping up on me again.

Its awful cause its so painful.

EDIT TO ADD: I even pulled a muscle when H and I were BDing lol! How sad is that!!!!!

    Sorry TMI. I know :P
