Breastfeeding

Any ideas?

Starting at about 2 months LO started to have bloody green mucusy stools and feel off the growth chart. I have since done an elimination diet and have cut out milk, soy, egg, wheat and nuts. She is almost 6 months old and while eliminating these things have made her not be fussy anymore her stools have yet to normalize and she has continued to fall off the growth chart and been diagnosed at FTT. I am clearly missing something in my diet but can not for the life of me figure out what it could be. Anybody have any luck cutting something I haven't mentioned out of their diet that helped stools normalize? As a side note- I am not opposed to putting her on the broken down formula but she flat out refuses to take bottles despite the help of feeding specialists. I'm getting desperate, any ideas?

  • Are you sure you aren't accidentally ingesting some dairy or soy unknowingly? Check out www.godairyfree.org if you haven't already. It helped me figure out how to read labels to find hidden dairy. I was shocked at all the different names for dairy that we not obvious.

Also try keeping a food diary of what you eat and mark down days when she's most fussy and has the worst stools. I have a good friend who's LO is allergic to sesame and thyme. They eliminated dairy and soy for months and later wheat before they figured out it was those two things.

I also highly recommend seeing a GI doc if your LO continues to not gain weight. They are awesome at figuring out allergy issues and most will continue to support your BF'ing relationship while solving your LOs FTT as quickly as possible.

I have met with 2 lactation consultants, neither one thought it was a hind milk issue.
LO's older sister has a milk allergy that I have been dealing with for 3 years, I am certain I am reading all the labels for dairy correctly but I'm not as great with soy so I just cut out processed foods that had anything except straight forward ingredients in them. We have been meeting with GI for 3 months and nutrition as well. We start with a feeding team next week. I really don't know what else I can do. I guess more than anything I just needed to vent, I know it isn't a very straight forward allergy situation, I just wish I could figure out what I am missing!
  • Oh Hon, as a mama of allergic boys I'm sorry to hear you and LO are having such a rough go of it. Great job BF'ing this far while dealing with it.

I wish I had any good suggestions for you, but I'm out. Just wanted to say ((hugs)) and I hope you and the feeding team figure it out quickly!!
