Moms of girls - When to paint nails?

Somehow friends and I got on the subject of painting little girls toenails, and I never gave the topic much thought, but some were adament that little girls not get their nails painted (at home) before a certain age.

So Moms of girls, when will or did you paint your daughter's nails? Do you care?

  • Funny you should ask because I painted Stella's piggies just last week.  I used OPI cause it's what I had.  Call me crazy, but I'm not one who really worries about stuff like that.  They look adorable and she thinks they are pretty fabulous too!

  • When they show interest and can sit for it.  Ava was obsessed with my painted toes a few weeks ago.  So, when I painted mine I tried to paint hers.  It didn't happen, lol.  FWIW, I see nothing wrong with it.  Ava likes dress-up, make-up, etc.  She also likes throwing balls and playing with trucks and boats.

  • If Oliver was a girl I probably would be painting his toenails now.  He gets a total kick out of my toes when they're painted, so it'd be cute to see him get excited about his own.

(I've actually considered doing it even though he's a boy.  But even though I'm not concerned about gender appropriate toys and stuff, something just seems odd about it.)

This past weekend we spent 4th of July with Ben's side of the family.  His cousin's 3 year old son had his toes painted blue and they looked adorable!  I totally think Ollie could rock some painted piggies too!

  • I think Betsy was 2 when I first painted her toenails.  The first time she didn't sit still and got paint all over the back of her feet.  The second time went much better.

  • I think I did Megan's the week after her birthday?  Not that I was waiting for a specific time as in age, but I wanted to wait until she was at least mostly walking.  We still have the bouncy seat and I put her in there with the DVD that I put in when I cut her finger and toe nails.  She sat pretty still until the last few toes on the second foot.  She saw how they looked and wanted to investigate closer!

I also used all OPI products because that's all I have.  I used a clear base coat and an oily spray type of quick dry.  It lasted for a little over 2 weeks and then I took it off right before bath time.  Her big toes looked the worst from rubbing against the ground when she crawls and plays on the floor.

I started painting DD's a couple months ago. She LOVES her "pretty toes" and begs me to paint them when they start chipping off. We even painted DS's because he freaked when he didn't get to do what sis was doing. Don't worry, we used clear and made sure that there wasn't even really anything on the brush. It made him happy. lol.

  • I just did Katen's a few days ago for the first time. I just wanted to wait until she could sit still for a few minutes. Now it's my bribe to get her toenails cut because she's so stinkin' ticklish.
