Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Food Schedule

Hi Ladies.. just curious if anyone could share their eating schedule.  I'm curious about how much cereal your mixing with fruits/veggies and how much milk you offer at that same feeding.  My son is 8 months old and right now he is having "solids" two times a day (getting ready to move to three).  The doctor suggested adding meat to the third.  I guess it's just a little overwhelming to be doing so many different things throughout the day and I want to make sure I'm doing it "right"(I know every baby is different, just looking for some different examples).  Thanks!

Re: Food Schedule

  • Don't let it overwhelm you - just find what works for your family.  I'll give you an idea of our method (not schedule).  My 9 month old struggles to drink enough formula during the day so we do more cereal than I would otherwise because we mix it with his formula to get it into him.  At 8 months old, I wouldn't put any focus on cereal at all but feel free to use it if you want.

So, that said, we follow a method vs a schedule because we change up his day based on how much he's drinking.  He typically eats overnight.  Depending on what time that is, he then has a solids breakfast at daycare around 8.  You could skip cereal here and do pieces of fruit, toast, yogurt, etc.  He gets a bottle mid morning if he'll drink it.  If he's struggling to drink, he'll have cereal with a veggie at lunch, around 12:30, otherwise just a veggie and some puffs. They dry a second bottle in the afternoon.

We get home around 5:45 and he eats all kinds of things for dinner - soft veggies, fruit, chicken, beef, cheese, etc.  He gets a bottle before bed.

  • My LO is 7 months and is eating 3 small solids a day. Each "meal" is probably the equivalent of about 1/3-1/2 jar of baby food and sometimes oatmeal or rice cereal added. He usually BFs in the morning around 7:30, has fruit and cereal with BM in it around 8:30/9, bf again after nap (maybe 11a) followed by lunch of a veggie an hour or so later. BF again after 2nd nap and then another veggie for dinner around 5. BF again before bed and if needed at night. We haven't added meat yet.
  • My son is 6.5 months and he has 2 "meals" a day.  Homemade fruit purees or yogurt mixed with oatmeal cereal for breakfast around 8:15am.  3 bottles of formula throughout the day and veggies (pureed or BLW) and a teething wafer for diner around 8pm.  He has about another 4 oz of formula before bed.  This week we just started giving him a couple ounces of water with dinner if he will drink it.  The more food he eats the less formula he has been drinking.

  • My kid will do BLW and get whatever I feel like giving her/whatever we are eating.
  • My daughter is almost 8 months old.  She still gets 5-6 bottles a day about every 4 hours.  I believe formula/breastmilk is still the main food until a year old, so we make sure she keeps up with it much the same as before we started solids.  She gets 2 "meals" a day.  One of rice cereal mixed with formula and the other is a stage one fruit or veggie.  Those meals are approx. 2-3 oz.
I feel like after reading all these posts that a lot of babies are much further along with their food intake than my LO, but it's what works for us, and our daughter seems to like it.

We have to feed her a bottle before we give her her solid food or she throws a fit.  Almost like she needs a "base" of formula in her tummy so she's not "starving," and then she will happily eat her cereal or fruits and veggies.  Anyone else?
