Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Baby only wants to eat cheerios

I started feeding purees at 6 months, and shortly thereafter introduced puffs & cheerios to build the pincer grasp.  I've been trying to get away from the purees and instead offer finger foods since she is 10 months now and is perfectly capable of feeding herself.  She is not interested in eating most things I put on her high chair tray.  She was always a good eater with purees, and liked almost everything I fed her.  For example, she enjoyed pureed peas, but when I put peas on her tray she refuses to eat them.  She'll pick one up, squish it and then drop it.  I leave the peas there hoping she'll eat some and she doesn't and so after 15-20 minutes I test her and put down some cheerios and sure enough, she eats them with no hesitation.  So she is hungry, she just doesn't want to eat much else besides cheerios.  The same thing has happened with carrots, chicken, turkey, pasta, and many fruits (she's eaten all of these in puree form and seemed to enjoy them).  At first I chalked it up to teething, but it hasn't gotten better.  For breakfast she will eat toast or waffle, but that's pretty much the extent of what she'll feed herself.  I'm starting to get worried just because lately most of her calories are coming from breast milk instead of solid food and I know that pretty soon that has to change but I don't want to rely on spoon feeding purees anymore.  Based on everything I've read on here, most babies are eating anything and everything that mommy and daddy are eating.  Any other mothers experiencing similar eating behaviors or have any tips/suggestions besides to just keep trying?

  • I do BLW but truly with kid #2 and #3 there was also spoon feeding just because sometimes there isn't time for everything.  I suggest putting out things like spaghetti made with spiral noodles, scrambled eggs, mac & cheese, cucumber sticks tossed with dressing (like ranch or ginger or some other lovely strong flavor).  So far, IME, babies like a LOT of flavor.

  • My son is 10 months old as well.  I do mostly purees which he always eats very well.  I usually also put down finger foods which he would pick up, play with, look at, drop, etc but not put in his mouth. If I picked it up, he would open his mouth, so I knew he wanted it!  Literally in the past 2 days he finally started doing it himself.  Just keep trying with a variety of foods.

  • My LO is just like yours and a few days shy of 10 months. I'm not too worried yet.

LO is still eating mostly purees at 9 months, 1 week. He has no interest in finger food other than bread, grilled cheese, and teething biscuits.
  • I think texture was a big thing for my DD.  It took her a while when we started doing finger foods to get over the texture of things and how different it was to swallow than when I would spoon feed her puree.  We kept at it and would put cheerios on the tray with other stuff to try and coax her to eat more than just cheerios.  Now her favorite meal is turkey, cheese and blueberries.  Hands down if she could eat that at every meal she'd be happy.  We currently stick to a fruit puree mixed with oatmeal for breakfast, which I feed her, followed by some cheerios or toast with cream cheese.  Lunch is usually the turkey meal I mentioned above and then for dinner I try to give her whatever we're eating.  If DH and I are eating really late DD will get whatever I have in the fridge and sometimes that winds up being the turkey meal again with toast or yogurt thrown in.  Just keep at it.  We've only quit using purees for lunch and dinner this past month because DD is finally more interested in feeding herself.
