Yeah, Recently moved to a different state just a couple of months ago so I don't have a Dr. of any kind here just yet! I need to look around and figure out a date to know when I will be going for sure..
With my first two deliverys the OB there saw you at 8 weeks. They did a transvaginal u/s and then standard blood work like iron and thyroid... No betas
My 3rd pregnancy I had to get a new ob. They made you pee on a stick at 4 weeks. They do a dating u/s at 6 weeks and same blood work as above, no betas. I have no losses since we have been trying with these 3. I had one at 21
So it's choosing between an 8-9 week visit, or a 12-13 week visit?
I am hearing 8 or 12 weeks and then again at 20 weeks to find out the gender of the baby.
Is that norm for the majority of women without known complications?
Since some people don't seem to have any symptoms, and they originally tested positive-
if you wait until 12 weeks- do women tend to test 1-2x between the months to make sure the hcg is still present? I am aware it can stay present for some time even if no longer pregnant..
It's not your choice when you go for the first ultrasound - it's your OB's. Some OB's have you wait until 12-ish weeks to have an ultrasound, some do it earlier. If you don't yet have an OB, I suppose you could call around and see what they do. Even if your OB doesn't order an ultrasound until 12 weeks, they will likely give you a urine pregnancy test at your first visit and possibly order bloodwork that includes a beta hcg test (among other things.)
Some OBs don't even do an early ultrasound. The practice I go to only does the anatomy scan at 20 weeks unless there is another issue, like when I had one at 16 weeks to check cervical length since I had a LEEP procedure a few years ago.
OP, the standard is to get seen some time between 7-12 weeks for your first visit and then, usually, every four weeks from there on out. Once you get into third tri, at some point it usually changes to every two weeks, then every week as your due date approaches.
ETA: also, your ultrasound at 20 weeks is not for the sole purpose of finding out the SEX of the baby. It is an anatomy scan where they take many measurements and determine if the baby is developing properly.

No, that's just a waste of money. Tests turn positive around 20-25 hcg (varies by brand). If the pregnancy is lost, you will bleed long before it gets that low.
You REALLY need to get an OB. Have you called to schedule your first appointment?
Ok so my other question is this - keep in mind I'm new to all of this - since you count from starting date of your last period, when you go in for your first visit at whichever week your Dr. Schedules you for, say 10 wks , can they then determine you are actually 7-8 wks at that point and then you wait until 20 weeks for scan or will they always go by last period even though it's a false week since you were obviously not pregnant ?

It's not a "false week". Pregnancy progress is calculated from the date of your last menstrual period. That's just how it's done. So for every woman, when she says, "I'm 10 weeks pregnant", she means that her last menstrual period started 10 weeks ago. I know it seems weird, but that's the standard dating approach, so just go with it and ignore the "false week".
FYI, if you don't know your last menstrual period day or if you don't ovulate around cycle day 14, some doctors will do dating ultrasounds, or, if you know you ovulate on, say cycle day 22, they'll simply add two weeks to your ovulation day to approximate your pregnancy progress.
