Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Sippy Cup

At what age did your babies get this down efficiently?
We started at 6 months. He gets it at every meal. Tried 3 different kinds (hard spout, soft spout, straw), and have stuck with the one that worked best for about 2 months now. He tries it for a second or two then seems to give up.  He still bangs it, throws it, offers it to everyone else. I'd really like to be off bottles at 12 months.
This is what we currently use....

Re: Sippy Cup

  • My DD has been using a sippy every meal since 6 months too,  And we just two weeks ago introduced BM in a sippy cup too.  She is getting the hang of it too.  I offer a different one for milk and a different one for water.
we use these for milk here
    And these for water here
It will happen.   I too wanted her off the bottle by one year.  No real advice, but just keep plugging away.

  • 6 months old. We use the nuby one. A sippy cup is just a bottle with handles., try teaching him a cup or straws. There is a really neat cup called the wow cup that I wanna try
  • @amie444 Is there a reason to use one cup for milk and one for water?

  • We started around six months too, but only with meals. I had to try soooo many different cups and he just started getting the real hang of it at 9 months. His favorite are the take n' toss sippy cups. I bought so many of the fancy ones and he really got hooked on the cheap-o ones. I guess I can't complain though! Good luck!
  • We just did. When daycare put her BM in the Tommie Tippee she sided eyed it and only took an ounce . When we put it in the other she had no problem. Who knows why she prefers it. But it works for us.

  • Some babies prefer a different cup for milk vs. water as it allows them to know what to expect. It can be disappointing to see a cup, think it's milk and take a drink to find water. If you use a certain one for milk then they know it will be milk. We use the Nuby flip and sip cups. They are straw cups and have a touch flow valve so even at about 6-7 months they can effectively drink from it. Other straw cups require more suction and it takes longer for them to master.

  • DD was started at daycare with a sippy.  I've been slow to use them at home just because she seemed to never figure it out.  We've both been better with it lately, though.  She'll be a year at the end of March.  Her biggest issue is tipping it up far enough to get something out of it.  The best one for her so far is the Nuby cup.  She has a harder time with the Dr. Brown's one.
