Weaning from Swaddle--Cold Arms

DD is starting to roll from tummy to back at 12 weeks. She's not very good at it so we have some time, but I think it's time to wean from the swaddle. I was told you can do practice opportunities during daytime naps without it or try taking one arm out at a time. Last night we took one arm out and she did great, but I noticed that her arm that was out was really cold. Is this OK? Seems like if her arms are out or if she's completely off the swaddle blanket she would need some other way to be kept warm at night. Or, can I just skip the swaddle weaning and go to the Magic Sleep Suit? I don't have a good understanding yet of when it's a good time to do these transitions. Any thoughts?

Re: Weaning from Swaddle--Cold Arms

  • We're transitioning my DD as well, and we just have to put her in outfits that are long sleeved. Her arms are out and the rest of her body is swaddled.

  • My guy sleeps in a sleep sack and his hands and arms are always a little chilly when I go to get him when he wakes to feed but he sleeps well otherwise so I'm not concerned he also sleeps on his tummy so he tucks his hands under him at night when he's cold I think. All you can do is try something new like sleep sack or Sleep suit and stick with it for a few nights and see if it works for your little one but give it some time for adjustment.
  • My LO had always slept arms out so I put him in long sleeves for sleep but honestly if your baby is sleeping it's not bothering them.
  • Going through the same thing but I understand the cold hands isn't really a sign they are cold.  However, I was going to get a Magic merlin sleep suit and read once they are rolling you shouldn't use that either.  So we quite swaddling for naps and still swaddle at night.  He doesn't try to roll yet in his crib when swaddling but we need to stop that soon too.

  • Ah OK, that is good to know about the cold hands. Yeah, it doesn't seem to be bothering her but I was curious because sometimes her hands are ice cold. Good to know!

I use a long sleeved onesie or a long sleeved nightgown under the sleeveless sleep sacks. Though LO is getting a bit too big for the nightgowns and with it so chilly at night the onesie isn't quite warm enough for him. Another option is a thin sleep and play.
