EBF and sippy cups....

My LO is EBF. I'm a SAHM, but my LO will take a bottle with no problems when I'm not home. I've been trying to introduce a sippy cup per pedis suggestion, but he isn't sure how to use it. He mostly scrapes the plastic with his teeth and is having a hard time lifting the cup up to get any liquid. Any suggestions or tips about what sippy cups to try or how to teach LO to use it? TIA!

Re: EBF and sippy cups....

  • I don't have any experience but can you use it so he sees how it works? Obviously not with BM in it. :-P

Can you give it to him at feeding time before giving him a breast or bottle to give him some motivation?

  • you don't even need to use the sippy cup- you can go right to a straw cup. they are better for their oral development and IMO it's easier for them to figure out how to use them. (here's more info on the benefits of using a straw cup vs a sippy cup).

once we start giving DS some solids at 6 months, we let him practice drinking water out of a straw cup. we got these cheap, reusable ones. it's pretty hard for them to spill them, too- you really have to shake them upside down to get anything to come out.
  • We also used a straw cup with DD.  (initially tried a different one and she didn't like it)  We use the Playtex one with a straw and she was really into it by 6 months, just with water or diluted juice though.  She still doesn't like it with WCM.
