Anyone else having trouble with sleeping on there side?

The pain is terrible!! I know they say sleeping on your back is bad but the side sleeping is killing my hip!!! Anyone have any suggestions on how I could sleep more comfortably? I don't remember the pain with my last pregnancy being this bad.

Re: Anyone else having trouble with sleeping on there side?

  • *their But yes, I find myself turning a lot throughout the night. Many of my friends suggest one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Shape-Total-Pillow-White-DeluxeComfort/dp/B005AWVLKG But I have a Queen sized bed and am not sure it will fit. I'm sleeping with a regular pillow between my knees, and another propping my lower back/butt. Good luck figuring out something that will help!

  • I feel like you should sleep however is comfortable at this point. I sleep on my back and sleep like a PP said on my belly/side with my leg popped up on a pillow. I don't stay in one position for long as I am awake almost hourly trying to get comfortable, but I find laying on my back is the most comfortable right now. I know I won't be able to do it forever...

  • The last few weeks of my first pregnancy I would wake up every hour because of hip pain, and roll to the other side.  After about an hour, that hip would be hurting and wake me, and I'd roll back.  Those were some restless nights.

For now, I'm still sleeping on my stomach.  Sleep however is comfortable for you right now.  You'll know when you need to stop stomach or back sleeping because it won't be comfy anymore.
  • Definitely recommend the Schnoogle pillow, but my doc told me not to worry about the side sleeping til closer to 20 weeks. I was pleased to hear it, since side sleeping is the worst!!
  • Per my OB from my last pregnancy, sleeping in any position is fine as long as you are comfortable, even on your stomach. I am still sleeping on my back and did for most of my last pregnancy. Sleep how you can!

  • I apologize in advance for this likely dumb question but why can't we sleep on our stomachs?
  • I am a stomach/side sleeper for the most part.  I have been having horrible lower back sleeping at night to the point where I couldn't sleep, left bed, and slept on the couch for the rest of the night.  After the second night of that I went out and bought a huge body pillow.  I sleep with that tucked up close and under one of my legs.  It has completely helped!  I have little to none back pain when I use it and can actually get some sleep.  We only have a queen sized bed so it makes everything a little more "cozy"; however, I would rather be cozy than in pain and miserable.

  • I actually have really bad hips. Left hip and shoulder have joint replacements and my right hip and shoulder have avascular necrosis and will need to probably be replaced eventually. As a result I am a toss n turn sleeper as well. But I do find more comfort with a pillow between my knees as well as a heating pad by my hips. Hope you find some relief.

  • I have not slept well at all in the last few weeks.  I have horrible pain in my lower back and hip but only on the right side.  Im normally a side sleeper and have been favoring my left side because its better for heart burn.  I think this has something to do w it for me.

I also sleep with a pillow between my knees which does help a little bit but not as much as Id like.

I'm a stomach sleeper too!  But I've been trying to sleep on my side to get in the habit, for when stomach sleeping is no longer an option.  I often wake up in the middle of the night on my stomach and panic out of fear that I'm crushing my baby.  Eek!  I know that I'm not, but it still scares the crap out of me.  SIde/stomach sleeping with one leg propped on a pillow seems to be a happy medium :-)

  • I am a side sleeper normally, but lately I've been tossing and turning all night and my lower back is always sore when I'm in bed. I don't have any bump yet, so I don't understand it. I am exhausted though.

I find sleeping on my left side to be much more comfortable than my right. Apparently your left side allows better blood flow, and your right side can put too much pressure on your liver.

I use a pillow between my legs, and kind of squish it a bit under my growing bump.

I'll invest in a body pillow soon.

  • I have only been able to back sleep lately. I just prop a pillow under my lower back so it slightly tilts me to one side.

  • I've been struggling to get comfortable too, and have been surrounding myself with pillows. I mostly sleep on my back, but lately I've had hip and knee pain that bugs me the most when laying on my back. I try to sleep on my side by hugging a pillow & also using it for support between my legs. The problem is that my darn arm gets numb after 1-2 hours of sleeping on my side, that never used to happen before. I'm debating on whether or not I should get a pregnancy pillow. I'm just worried we are not going to fit in our queen sized bed if I come home with this ginormous pillow.
  • I have been super uncomfortable sleeping anyway lately. I sleep with a body pillow on one side. I think I am going to have to change to my snoogle soon though. DH doesn't like the snoogle because it takes up a lot of room lol.

  • I'm a back sleeper. At week 8-9, I was already paranoid about the decreased blood flow if I didn't sleep on my left side. I eventually got a peace of mind from the doctor to not worry about it around 20 weeks or so. Before that though, I had already gotten a Snoogle from Target and I love it! I'm more comfortable side sleeping now as well as back sleeping. I can also picture using the pillow (which can be adjusted) for the baby when it's born as well to help it sit up, etc.

  • @reverey
Whoops, didn't realize how I said it might sound weird. What I meant is that I read that if I didn't sleep on my left side, there would be less blood flow to the baby, therefore I was worried about not being able to sleep on my left side since I never sleep that way. It's such an adjustment.

I highly recommend the snoggle btw! When I first got it, I probably woke up some the first few nights whenever I changed position since it was weird to have it there. Now the only time I wake up is when I gotta pee! Warmth hasn't been an issue either although that could change when summer comes.
