Breastfeeding

Zantac

Has anybody taken Zantac while breastfeeding?  My doctor is prescribing 75mg 2x/day for an allergy.  We had a lengthy discussion because I didn't feel comfortable with standard antihistamines but thought this might be a solution.  I am still hesitant but almost desperate for some relief.

Re: Zantac

  • Doctor thinks it is fine but she also recommended some other stuff that according to the Lactmed website is not ok and just kept checking the app on her phone to see what meds were OK.  My LO is 10 weeks old and I do not want to risk any supply issues.  I am sure it is safe for him just worried about supply.

  • My gastroenterologist has me on 300 mg/day. I took it all during pregnancy and have continued it since LO was born seven months ago.

So i guess it turned out fine? I am hesitant when it comes to taking any medications during pregnancy so I always ask at least 2 doctors for their opinion about it.
  • I too am hesitant when taking any medication. I barely took no more than a handful of Tylenol throughout my pregnancy. The lactation risk categories are looking at impact on infant and not supply. I am avoiding claritn because according to lactmed it hasn't been looked at for impact on milk supply.

I've taken it on occasion while nursing with no problem and actually took it quite often during pregnancy due to terrible reflux. Also, keep in mind that they often prescribe zantac to babies with reflux.

ETA: I noticed no decrease in supply when taking it. I've also taken benadryl some while nursing and didn't notice a change in supply.

  • Thank you everyone for the info.  I just took Claritin and will see how it goes.  Up to this point, I haven't taken anything and was hoping things would clear up on it's own and was really just dry skin from the terribly cold winter.  I will need to be on it for at least 2-3 weeks ideally recommended for 4-6 but will see how things go.  I have no intentions of stopping breastfeeding.
