Mesh crib bumpers...yay or nay?

So I know crib bumpers are not recommended and I totally understand why, but the slats in my crib still worry me for getting limbs stuck eventually. We have had our nephew in the crib and he has been fine but we have definitely seen his leg splay out and get into a slat. It
Meets all us and international standards and everything but my mom to be brain is concerning me. Are mesh bumpers so bad if the entire concern is suffocation?

I don't know much about the recommendations for mesh bumpers, but with DD we decided we weren't even going to look into bumpers until it looked like we needed to.  At first DD didn't move around her crib a lot at all.  Later on when her legs / arms would go between the slats she could easily get them out.  We never saw the need for bumpers.  So, my suggestion is to just wait it out and see if you feel the need for them down the road.

  • I saw them at Buy Buy Baby and they do look breathable, but personally I just don't want to chance it. We never had a need for bumpers with DD. We've definitely seen her (on her monitor) stick an arm or leg in between the slats, but she always pulls her arm/leg back in without getting them stuck.

  • I used them starting when DD was 7-8 months old because her pacifiers kept falling out of the crib.  By that point, I wasn't worried about suffocation because she was totally mobile (and they were mesh).

  • Bumpers in general are fairly unnecessary.  Unless your child is a really active sleeper I would just save the money.  You can always buy one later if you notice they are a mover.
  • I never ended up using any bumpers with DD.

  • Nay. I've heard that the baby can get tangled or stuck in any type of bumper including those new breathable ones.

Ok I feel better about not getting one- they make me nervous either way but so does head or lump entanglement but by the time they can move that much I guess they can get themselves out. She won't be moving much at all for awhile anyways.

  • I would wait to see if you need them. We didn't have any when we moved DD to her crib (at 6 months), but within a week or so she kept getting her legs stuck and would wake up SCREAMING multiple times a night.. So we bought the breathable bumpers and she has been fine. We also use the Angelcare monitor so that gave me more peace of mind. This time around, I am waiting to see if she needs them.

  • DS gets his arms and legs stuck every once in a while. While it wakes him up, it doesn't usually keep him from going back to sleep easily. He has never injured himself doing this. But we actually put the bumpers into the crib to help with that once he was about a year old. And its not that big of a help. He really likes to squish the bumpers down and lay on them so they don't really keep him from sticking arms out or anything. I wouldn't worry about it too much and it will be a while before this would really be an issue anyway.

  • DD is 2 and we've never used bumpers. She sometimes sleeps with an arm or foot out, but has never been stuck. If stuck legs are a concern, put them in a sleepsack. By the time they're more mobile in their crib, they can also start using them as a step to climb out. I don't think the downside of using them (they are not recommended) is worth the benefit of perhaps saving a stuck limb. Save your money!
  • I am pretty sure all bumpers including mesh are illegal here in MD.

  • We used them, but I would't worry about it unless limbs in the slats become an issue.

  • Around 6 months we figured we needed something, he was getting his limbs stuck in the slats several times a night.  By this time I was sure he could roll around/over.  I wouldn't start off with them but add them in as needed.

  •  I bought the mesh one at target weeks ago..... since the bedding  go just came with crib skirt and sheets. hen we got a crib that the back board is solid without the slats. So took it back today. We did use with older DD (the ones that came with bedding). But going to try without this time.

  • Unnecessary at any age.
