UO?

This hadn't been posted yet, right? I've been up for a few hours with my newborn howler monkey.

Let's hear em!

Re: UO?

  • Mine is that I think cable tv dramas have been over the top in terms of sex/violence lately. I'm no weenie, and have been a fan of Sopranos, Oz, Dexter, etc. But lately it seems that shows are trying too hard to shock the audience and throw in a bunch of random sex and extreme violence without any real plot or entertainment value behind these inclusions.

This UO brought to you by my recent viewing of the pilot for Black Sails, and the most recent seasons of SOA as examples.

  • I know a bunch of you all love Daniel Tiger, so I might get flamed for this. My kid is not old enough to understand it yet, so the singing of the lesson every five seconds drives me nuts.

Maybe I'll change my mind when it actually teaches DD something, but right now I just turn it off. This may be a UO and my FFFC all rolled into one.

  • @wasnotwas I can tolerate a lot from kids shows usually, just that one I have an issue with. It may be because we turned it on for the first time after spending a sleep-deprived night with DD in a hotel room.

My kid loves Daniel Tiger but... it's taught him to have problems with things that were never a problem for him. For example: being afraid of the dark, worrying that I'll pick him up from school. He's not afraid of those things and he uses them as a stall tactic.

UO? My kid is playing me?

I need to go back to sleep. It's not even 5am.

  • I didn't realize this was an UO until last week...I really like House of Cards.  It isn't the West Wing, but it is entertaining.  The second season is pretty good so far.  I also really like Kevin Spacey.
@Whenigrowup You took mine! I like it too - I'm a huge Kevin Spacey fan. :-)

Not everything needs decorated or served in a mason jar. I also don't like the whole Americana home decor theme.

Hey! Did you forget the pic I showed you of my mason jar spices idea?!?! You mean except me, right???

I agree. I'm not a prude in any sense, but some of the shows do go over the top.

I have said this to DH, I feel like I get into a show in the first season, and then after the first season with a good story line it turns to nothing but battles, war, and sex.  Game of Thrones was my example.  True Blood too.

  • It's ridiculous that you can't wear leggings to work! We can wear them at school as long as the top covers our area like PP said. The same rule applies to the kids.

  • This isn't a UO here but it is at work. I don't think panty house should be required in the year 2014. Especially in Florida where it will be hot as balls in about a month.
Agreed.  I have to wear hose and suits every day at my current job and it is miserable.  I'm so excited about my new job because I can wear whatever.  I kind of want to bring OOTD threads back now that I can finally wear cute outfits to work every day.

I'll participate on Thursdays when I can wear jeans. No one can see my cute clothes in my cubicle.

If the tumblr world is any indication, I think the next generation of adults will be pretty kickass.
I agree with this.  It actually helps to give me a modicum of peace about some of the nonsense that people my age still believe (re: homosexuality, marriage equality, etc.).  I really do feel like much of that is dying out and it makes me so happy.
I agree too. I teach 6th graders, and while of course they aren't perfect, the majority of them are incredibly kind and thoughtful. I definitely see a lot of compassion in them.

I think parents who don't even TRY to prep their kid for the next classroom are really doing their kid, DC workers and other kids in the same room a disservice. It's not the DC's job to raise your kid!!!

    ETA - clarity

I feel similarly when kids get to school age. Education is just as important at home. And I really feel like parents set the tone for attitude about school. I find that 99% of the time if the kid doesn't care about their work, it's because there's little to no support at home. Of course there are exceptions, but most of the parents we conference with seem to not care much. And the saddest part is the students we really need to meet about, the parents won't show up at all. :-(

ETA - When I say "conference" I don't mean regular parent-teacher conferences. I meant if we needed to call a parent in special.

Then you have kids who the teacher is asking you not to go any further because they are bored in class.  If there is a happy medium, it doesn't live in this house.

  • @laceyjean1 I promise I would never say that to you! I frequently tell parents, "Thank you so much for taking such an active role in your child's education. It is much appreciated!"

  • I would rather wear jeans than yoga pants.  Mostly because of the pockets.

    Edited for clarity

    Agree...

I love for my sweatpants to have pockets. I have a lot of stuff to carry. And my boobs are useless.

My sister and I have both had teachers ask us not to teach our children certain things so they would have something to learn in school.

My boys are really good in math, and reading, but struggle with writing. So, they aren't really "level" with anything.  They always seem to be way ahead, or way behind.

I definitely agree with that! We use an in home, and I LOVE the woman that runs it. We even went out for drinks once! :P

This is sad. When I was younger my parents were not involved in my school work at all and I definitely was a poor student as a result. I think if my parents were involved I would have done a whole lot better. Fortunately, when I reached high school I had the foresight to realize that I needed to do well in order to go to college and I turned by attitude around despite minimal support at home.
This was me, too.  I don't remember my parents ever sitting down to do homework with me or even make sure I did my homework, let alone study.  I make an extra effort to make school and education a priority with my children.

  • We used to have a cab service in college called the Shabazz Cab. It was one solitary SUV whose job was to pick up drunk kids.

    Sorry for the random anecdote.

  • An easy, comfy dress with leggings beats jeans any day. Unfortunately, I have none of these any more because I'm too damn picky about mah clothes. Guess I should pick up sewing, lol.
